Orlando Magic guard Jameer Nelson is done playing for this season, whether he has surgery on his injured shoulder or not, GM Otis Smith tells Florida Today.

Nelson suffered a torn labrum in his right (shooting) shoulder February 2. Smith has allowed him to seek medical options that might let him return this season, and the team is expected to announce next week whether he will have arthroscopic surgery that would require six months of rehab.

"You can rehab it and still play, but that's usually when it's the off (nonshooting) shoulder," Smith told the newspaper. "He goes down four or five times a game and that shoulder just wouldn't hold up. He's one of my toughest players, but we can't let him play through this."

Smith has said it's his job to think in the long-term interest of the team and Nelson, who is in the first season of a five-year, $40 million deal.

That's a good decision on part of the Magic.

Wade springs to mind because he should undergone surgery in 2007. That was a bad decision for him to forgo surgery so that he could come back and help a bunch of Oldies in the Playoffs.

That is a huge break for the East this year. Weren't the Magic undefeated when Nelson scored above twenty? It was some pretty sick stat like that. He was looking pretty monstrous this year.
