The stands were about empty for yesterday's races in Fontana. I'll bet that it will be less than 75% for today's race, maybe closer to 60. It's a shame they continue to go there when other tracks could use a date and put people in the stands.

The Nationwide Series race always draws a smaller crowd than the Sprint Series race on Sunday.

This is very true. I was a season ticket holder for 8 years in Ft Worth. Always had 40-50 thousand for those races.
If you saw either race yesterday, the stands on the front stretch were almost empty. I also read an article that Fontana only had about 50% of tickets sold for the cup race and I believe seating is about 90K. It's a shame they keep going there. Not to mention it's always a boring race. :sleep
We'll see if the cameras show the empty seats today.
Next week will be a better race in Vegas.

HA!!! I moved up one spot... from freaking last place!!!

They said there was 78.000 there on Sunday which was up from last year...

ratings seem to be up as well.

I hate when they go there

Evil Angel
02-24-2009, 08:48 AM
Maybe not Dawn...
Also saw that FOX had a 5.3 overnight rating, down 14.5% from last year.
I will say that I expected a boring race, and it was until the end.
On to Vegas!!! Should be a much better race.

Attendance down at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana

By Joe Smilor on February 23, 2009 8:15 PM

There's a lot of trash talk in sports.

A survey of the landscape Monday at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana revealed plastic wrappers here, an empty beer case there. A frayed recliner snuggled against a garbage can.

Not much trash, really. Perhaps that spoke volumes.

Maybe racing fans are a tidy group. Could be the cleanup crew was efficient. Or maybe there were fewer potential litterbugs at the Auto Club 500 over the weekend.

"It's the most empty I've ever seen the infield," said Sean Tyrrell, an Apple Valley resident who, with a rare exception or two, has pulled his motorhome into the Speedway for NASCAR weekends during the past 12 years.

An estimated 55,000 fans attended Sunday's Auto Club 500. The seating capacity of the grandstand is 92,100.

Tyrrell said the infield crowd looked to be about 20 percent smaller than the typical turnout for race weekend.

It costs between $400 and $600 to rent a spot for the weekend. Tyrrell said he spent about $2,000 -- including food and gas -- to camp at the track for the weekend.

He said he's a committed fan who is passing down the love of the sport to his family, so cost really isn't an issue.

His 15-year-old son, Tyler, has attended every NASCAR race at the Speedway since the gates opened in 1997. His favorite driver is Jimmie Johnson, who finished ninth in Sunday's race.

"I was surprised," Tyler said. "Not as many people."

There probably will be more at the Pepsi 500 in October, he said.

That depends.

His dad said for many of the friends he's made over the years at the races, the economy has bumped live NASCAR off their list of priorities.

"(They said) it's not worth it, I'm not going to spend that type of money," Tyrrell said.

He invited Tom Reed of Big Bear to the races. It was Reed's first live NASCAR event.

"We had a blast," he said. "Especially the first day, because I'd never been to the truck races before."

Reed said the fans were a fun group. Flexible. They helped each other pull into their spots Friday.

"Crammed in here like sardines," he said.

Some of the fun was in watching trailers and motorhomes try to leave the Speedway after Sunday's big race.

"It was a cluster," Tyrrell said.

Still, while the International Speedway Corp. does not release attendance figures, some reports indicate that Sunday's turnout was the lowest of the 18 NASCAR Cup races at the track.

Speedway officials could not be reached for comment Monday.

At the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where the Shelby 427 is scheduled this weekend, officials said they expect a huge crowd, but tickets are available.

"I don't think there is a single sports business in the country that hasn't seen an effect from the economy," said Jeff Motley, senior director of public relations. "It's a bit more challenging."

Maybe they need more fans like Tyrrell. He said he's not giving up his spot in the infield any time soon.

"It'll be a lifetime," he said.

Some of the TOYOTA teams have had engine problems. They were using a low friction motor oil to get more HP and it hurt the valves in the engine. Michael Waltrip Racing, and Red Bull teams all had to get their engines changed before the race and use a heavy oil that cost about 5 hp. Kyle Bush also had to have a engine change. All move to the back of the grid for the start.

Almost to Tuscaloosa...at least the snow's stopped. Everything's still white though. They have an old #40 Coors Light show car parked out in front of the Race City truckstop in Talladega. It looked funny all covered in snow.

I heard a interview with Danica Patrick on the the Dan Patrick show this morning. Every time Dan asked her a question she answered it with a question. I though she came off looking just plain stupid. I think she is overrated as race car driver just like her teammate Marco. They both have had the very best of equipment in their careers but little have produced little in the way of results. I would like to see Sara Fisher have the same chance they have.

Time will tell on this move. He's a bit of a bitch during the race and Tony Jr could deal with it. We'll see how he communicates with someone that is not family. Someone who will tell him to STFU and drive!
Jr I'm sure is not very happy with this change. They've been together his whole career.
And it's hard to blame the crew chief for missing your pit along with some of the other errors on the track this year. I call that driver error.

there have been mistakes i think even dale jr would admit that he has made on the track that have been costly for him. and last season the 88 wasn't horrible, they just finished lower that what mostly eveyone expected. i think the biggest issue this season and the main reason for the change is how far off they've missed on setups and adjustments. whether that's not jr communicating or tony jr making the bad calls is the question. the set up they had last weekend was absolutely horrible and no driver/team of that quality should ever perform that bad. i see this change as more an x's and o's type of scenario.

And he won the race.

"The event concluded because of the time limit following the accident, and in accordance with the series rule book, the finishing order reverted back to the last completed green-flag lap, and Pardo, who was leading at that time, was declared the winner."

I wonder if all safety measures used in NASCAR are in place in the Mexico series? Either way its a shame. :depressed
