Visiting Chinese scholar dies during first day at MSU

A Chinese scholar was hit and killed by a car while walking near Michigan State University Sunday -- the first day of his visit to the United States.
Tao Li, 44, arrived from China on Sunday for work as a visiting scholar at MSU, police said. Li was trying to cross Harrison Road at night when he was struck by 1998 Ford Escort going westbound on Mount Hope, according to East Lansing Police Sgt. Carl Nowak.
Police received the emergency call of a car-pedestrian accident at 9:17 p.m. Emergency crews transported Li to Sparrow Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The accident remains under investigation, Nowak said.
