I got as far as the attorney's bringing in their defendant and discussing what the case was going to be about. Robbery.

His attorney did not want me on that jury. It was obvious from the questions they asked that it was a dad trying to get custody of a 2 year old daughter from a woman to whom he was never married. She and the girl lived in San Antonio, and he wanted the kid and to move her away to where his family is. His claim was that it was bad that the girl went to day care while the mom worked and that if he had the girl, his parents would watch her during the day. I answered honestly that I felt that he had a much higher burden of proof than the mom did to convince me that a two year girl should be taken from her mother and moved away. His attorney did not want me anywhere near the case.

I served on a capital murder jury once. Not fun but we convicted the sick SOB. Judge said afterwards it was the most open-and-shut case he'd seen in a while but it still took us most of a day for everyone to vote to convict after a week of testimony. At the end the family of the deceased wanted to shake everyone's hand - what do you say at a moment like that?

Fortunately the death penalty was not on the table. It would be hard to send someone to the chair.

Ironically, the last thing they seem to want is anyone who actually knows anything about the matter at hand. You would expect with your degree that you would be a good choice, but they want people they can fool and convince. I know someone with a Ph.D. in constitutional law. He is the first guy the attorneys get rid of.

I always donate my $8 for the day or whatever it is you get now.

The Jury Reimbursement Donation Program is a fund raised through the generosity of people who are called to jury duty in Bexar County. Jurors who voluntarily donate their daily jury reimbursement help provide for the basic and special needs of abused and neglected children.

The Jury Reimbursement Donation Program was created because state and county social services funding cannot provide for all of the needs of these children and their families.

All voluntary donations directly benefit abused and neglected children living with their families or foster families. Funding helps provide shoes, clothing, healthcare, medicine, school supplies, bedding, counseling, toiletries, diapers, cribs, safety car seats, and gifts for holidays and birthdays.

And they certainly don't want anyone who could possibly challenge their "expert" witnesses.

I once had to testify in a medical malpractice case, where the expert witness was tearing apart all the care that was given to the patient. When we each had to defend our individual standards of care, the prosecutor asked me, "Who taught you that?" I pointed at the expert witness and said "She did", the expert witness had been my instructor!

I reported to jury duty this past Wednesday- along with at least 300 other people.

They called four panels- one for forty people and three for 24 people but I was not selected for any of them.

I took the bus downtown. In the early morning I was traveling mostly with commuters so I felt pretty safe.
But at the bus stop for my return trip in the afternoon there were some quite questionable looking characters with whom I was relieved to finally part ways.

While I was downtown I attended an Ash Wednesday service at the beautiful San Fernando Cathedral.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_of_San_Fernando

I climbed up all stairs of the courthouse just to see if there was anything interterting to see up at the top. There wasn't.

During my lunch break I took a walk, got lost ( shush Ashbeeigh! :lol) and found my way back all by myself. ( So there! :lol :))

I met a retired soldier who had worked in same hospital in Heidelburg, Germany which I was born in. Not only that, the soldier was assigned to the very nursery I stayed in a a newborn, although I was ten by the time he worked there.

All in all, it was an exhausting but interesting experience.

I saved the best part for last.
The judge who helped us through the process was a basketball fan and shared this joke with us.

Kobe Bryant died and went to Heaven.
( The judge paused at this point of his delivery to say, " That was not the punchline, don't laugh yet. :lol)

So, Kobe was let in the gates of Heaven and was immediately greeted by God, who escorted Kobe to Kobe's mansion.
God and Kobe arrived at Kobe's heavenly home which was spacious one story with a great yard and an excellent view.

God told Kobe, " You should feel honored. Not many people get a view like this."

Kobe proceeded to look out the window of his mansion and immediately noticed the mansion next door.

The neighboring house was three stories tall and triple the size of Kobe's place. On the outside of the mansion was a fifty foot flag pole with a Spurs flag hanging from it. Every window of the sprawling mansion was fully decorated with Spurs memorabilia.

Kobe turns to God and says, " That's not fair, God! Why does Tim Duncan get a bigger house than me???"

God to Kobe: " That's not Tim Duncan's house. That's MY house."

:lol

I just received my first jury duty summons in the mail yesterday, I've got to call a number the day before I'm required to report, and that's about all I know.

I'm not sure if my company pays their employees during jury duty, so I'll have to check into that. What experiences have ya'll had? I don't see my company docking my salary for the time, though if they did, the $40.00 a day the county provides will be no substitute.

Last time I had Jury Duty, the judge opened up the day by asking the entire room if there was anyone there that believed that the defendent had to testify in order to prove his guilt? Me and one other dude raised our hand and we were immediately excused. Jury Duty took me 15 minutes that day and I took the rest of the day off.

I think it could be interesting, and like you said, something other than my normal day at the office. My company does in fact pay for 2 weeks of jury duty, anything after that I would have to use vacation or submit a leave of absence form.

The $40.00 is just a rumor I've heard around the office and I think that's only once you are part of a jury but I have no idea. If I can get my normal pay at work and add whatever chump change to it for serving, then I'm not against that at all.

I was on a murder trial jury with another guy and 8 women. The defense
lawyer was very good. He was able to get half of the women to hate the victims wife
more than the murderer. It was like a TV show where there was shouting in the
jury room and plenty of hard feelings to go around. We found him guilty but the
sentencing was just as bad. I hate the time I was there so much that when i get
called for jury duty i fill out the information form with a big MURDER letters when they ask
if i ever was on a jury before. Another thing I do now is when the are interviewing you for a jury
and ask if it is ok with you if if the defendant doesn't testify I say no he needs to step up and testify
on his own behalf. They sometimes flip out when you say that.

I hate how lawyers on both sides ask everybody the same question over and over again during jury pools. When they reword the questions to get the answers they want, they just make things confusing for the jurors. I had to sit through six+ hours of that shit on my last day.
