STAMFORD, Conn. -- The pet chimpanzee, named Travis, attacked 55-year-old Charla Nash at its Rockrimmon Road home Monday afternoon after it got out of the house.

“The animal is so intelligent, he grabbed the keys, unlocked the kitchen door to allow itself out," Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin said.

Nash was coming with an orange toy to help Travis' 70-year-old owner, Sandra Herold, calm the animal, who police said had been agitated all day.

Herold gave the chimp tea laced with Xanax in an attempt to calm him. When that didn't work, police said Herold called for Nash's help.

Police said Travis violently attacked Nash as she exited her vehicle. They called the attack "lengthy and vicious."

Herold called 911 and went to help her friend. Police said she stabbed Travis, whom they said she raised like a child, several times with a kitchen knife before police arrived. Police said Herold also tried hitting Travis with a shovel in an attempt to get him to stop attacking Nash.

“She ran to the kitchen, grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed her chimp," Conklin said.

Police said Travis can be heard screaming during Herold's 911 call.

Police said Travis then ran over to police cruisers and broke a mirror off one of the vehicles before opening a cruiser door. Stamford police said the chimp moved as though he was going to attack the officer, prompting the officer to shoot the animal in the chest at close range.

Travis then ran off, and police said officers following the blood trail found him dead in his living quarters inside the home.

Nash was transported to Stamford Hospital with life-threatening and "life-changing injuries," police said. Neighbors told Eyewitness News that the chimp bit the woman's hands off.

"He bit both of her hands off," said Herold's friend, Lynn Mecca. "The cop said he was eating … it’s terrible. I don’t want to talk about it."

“I would have never thought Travis was capable of doing this. I don't think anybody was," said Michael Grant, who’s known Herold for years. “Last time I saw Travis, he was in one of the upstairs windows giving monkey cries in the neighborhood. You'd think you were in Africa."

Police said Herold was also taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. The officer whom the chimp lunged at was transported to the hospital for shock and trauma treatment, police said. The officer has since been treated and released.

The 9-1-1 call was horrific! It made me sick to my stomache!

The link to the 9-1-1 call is on that link I provided previously. But, just wow...you can even hear the police shoot the chimpanzee in the background.

It must have been very bad. The chimp bit off her friends hands, ripped off her face and an officer had to be treated for shock and trauma.
I feel so bad. What a situation! She keeps on saying that the chimp ripped her friend apart and she thinks she's dead...she keeps asking for help and telling the police to hurry.

She cries at one point," They have to have thier guns out. Listen to me!!!"

When asked how old her friend is. She says," She's dead.." (It sounds as if she's puking and is about to faint.)

Much later, you can hear the gunshots as the police shoot her chimp...She starts crying uncontrollably....and it sounds as if she's hyperventillating...

During the 9-1-1 call, you can hear a policeman call for an ambulance because "the woman didnt have a face..."

The 200 pound Chimp ripped it off...

(Supposedly, during the attack, the owner tried to help her friend and stabbed her chimp several times...)

Really?

My brother is enlisted in the Army and he was deployed to Iraq 3 times! THREE!

I also have two brother-in-laws; one of them was deployed to Iraq once and the other is going pretty soon and for the first time.

Of course people care! And I know how bad it is over there because I've heard the countless stories.

But, this is about a damn chimp....What does our military have to do with this?

Chimpanzee Owner Says She Never Gave Xanax to the Animal
Wednesday, February 18, 2009

The owner of a 200-pound chimpanzee that attacked a Connecticut woman is reportedly disputing police accounts that she gave the animal an anti-anxiety drug prior to the attack.

Sandra Herold, 70, told The Associated Press Wednesday that she "never, ever" gave Xanax to Travis, her 14-year-old domesticated chimpanzee. Herold pleaded with police over the phone to help her stop the animal from mauling her friend, 55-year-old Charla Nash, telling them they had to "shoot him" when they arrived.

Nash suffered extensive facial and bilateral hand injuries when she was attacked Monday, and took more than seven hours of surgery by four teams of surgeons to stabilize her condition, Dr. Kevin Miller of Stamford Hospital said. She was attended by hand specialists, plastic surgeons and specialists in orthopedics, ophthalmology and trauma.

Dr. Miller added that Nash had made some progress Wednesday, but she had a long way to go.

Authorities in Stamford released 911 tapes of Herold's frantic call to police on Thursday. The chimp can be heard grunting at times on the tape, as Herold cries, "He's killing my friend!"

The dispatcher said, "Who's killing your friend?"

Herold replied, "My chimpanzee! He ripped her apart! Shoot him, shoot him!"

After police arrive, one officer radioed back: "There's a man down. He doesn't look good," he says, referring to the disfigured Nash. "We've got to get this guy out of here. He's got no face."

The chimp attacked Nash as Herold frantically stabbed her beloved pet with a butcher knife and pounded him with a shovel. Nash remained in critical condition Wednesday with injuries to her face and hands. She suffered "a tremendous loss of blood" from serious facial injuries, police said.

Herold said Tuesday that Travis had nothing but love until the "freak accident."

"It's just been hell," she told MyFOXNY. "There's no way to explain it any different."

Investigators said they were also told that Travis had Lyme Disease, a tick-borne illness with flu-like symptoms that can lead to arthritis and meningitis in humans. The attack was believed to be unprovoked.

"Maybe from the medications he was out of sorts," Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin said.

Nash had gone to Herold's home in Stamford on Monday to help her coax the chimp back into the house after he got out, police said. After the animal lunged at Nash when she got out of her car, Herold ran inside to call 911 and returned with a knife.

After the initial attack, Travis ran away and started roaming Herold's property until police arrived, setting up security so medics could reach the critically injured woman, Conklin said.

But the chimpanzee returned and went after several of the officers, who retreated into their cars, Conklin said. An officer shot Travis several times after the animal opened the door to his cruiser and started to get in.

The wounded chimpanzee fled into the house and retreated to his living quarters, where he died.

When he was younger, Travis starred in TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola, made an appearance on the "Maury Povich Show" and took part in a television pilot, according to a 2003 story in The Advocate newspaper of Stamford.

Herold said she was turned away from the hospital when she went to visit Nash Tuesday, MyFOXNY reported. She's trying to get Travis' body so he can be cremated on her property, but cannot due to the police investigation.

I'm guessing that whole getting your face torn off and your hands bit off thing can put a little strain on a friendship.

It's weird though you know, doesn't seem like the Chimp went after his owner like he did everyone else....as crazy as he was. Unfortunately for him though, she didn't return the sentiment.

There's something fishy about this story.

For one thing, chimps don't weight 200lbs - they weight up to about 60kg, or 130lbs. Also, how exactly could a chimp bite someone's hands off and rip off their face? Chimps have similar mouths to humans - you think you could bite someone's hand off? Maybe a finger, but a hand? And as for the face - scratching I can imagine, but taking someone's face off would require super-sharp talons, or a scalpel.

Maybe it's just the usual hyperbole in reporting (I thought reporting was meant to be about getting the details right, but meh), but this sounds like a set up to me.

Veterans Day: Why It's Today, How It's Changed & More

At Veterans Day celebrations and events around the country, the United States is honoring the men and women of the nation's armed forces.

So why is November 11 Veterans Day? Who is it for? And how has it changed?

In keeping with Veterans Day tradition, U.S. President Barack Obama today laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, saying, "While it is important and proper that we mark this day, it is far more important we spend all our days determined to keep the promises that we've made to all who answer this country's call."

(See pictures of Arlington National Cemetery, site of the annual U.S. national Veterans Day ceremony.)

Speaking from the National Veterans Day Observance, Joe Davis, spokesperson for the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW), described the standing-room-only scene.

"You have the President, you have cabinet members, you have the joint chiefs, and you have the public, veterans and family members, gathered to pay tribute to the sacrifice of all who served in uniform," he said. "And I would include their families as well, because they definitely also served."

Similar Veterans Day events will be carried out in cities and towns across the United States today, recognizing the 48 million men and women who have served or are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, including 23 million living U.S. veterans and active duty service members.

Veterans Day Date Marks End of "Great War"

In the U.S., Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I. The so-called War to End All Wars ended with an armistice signed at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, in Compiègne, France—the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

In the U.S., President Woodrow Wilson commemorated the first Armistice Day in 1919. It was made a national holiday via an act of Congress in 1938.

After World War II it became clear that the World War I armistice marked only the ending of World War I, not of war itself. The holiday was renamed Veterans Day to honor all those who served in the U.S. military.

In 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill designating November 11 as Veterans Day.

Veterans Day Long Weekends Lost

In 1968 Veterans Day was moved, by an act of Congress, to the fourth Monday in October. This shift of Veterans Day (as well as similar moves for Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, and Columbus Day) was designed to create a three-day weekend for government employees.

The Veterans Day long weekend, though, was resisted by many states, localities, and veteran's groups. By 1978 Veterans Day was again rescheduled for annual observance on November 11.

Last "Great War" Veterans Nearly Gone

In the United Kingdom and other past and present nations of the British Commonwealth, November 11 is still Armistice Day.

World War I veterans are remembered by the wearing of real and artificial red poppies, like those found in Belgium after "In Flanders Fields"—the name of a popular World War I poem eulogizing fallen British soldiers. Armistice Day is also marked with two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m.

For honoring service members in general, the U.K. has its own Veterans Day—renamed Armed Forces Day in 2009—which falls in June of each year.

This year's British Armistice Day ceremonies held special poignancy, because 2009 saw the loss of the last World War I veterans living in the U.K: Bill Stone, 108; Henry Allingham, 113; and Harry Patch, 111. Australian resident and British Navy vet Claude Choules, 108, is now the last known British survivor of the Great War.

One U.S. veteran survives from the war that gave birth to Veterans Day: Frank Buckles, 108, of West Virginia. Canadian John Babcock, 109, also survives and currently lives in Spokane, Washington.

France and Germany have no known living World War I veterans.

November 11 is not celebrated in Germany, which was defeated along with other Central Powers countries. This year, however, the German nation for the first time took part in French Armistice Day celebrations in a very public way.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel joined French President Nicolas Sarkozy for a Paris ceremony that not only honored the dead of past conflicts but stressed reconciliation between the former foes.

Who Does Veterans Day Celebrate?

The VFW's Davis said some people remain confused about who the United States' various military-oriented holidays honor.

Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, is set aside for Americans to honor those who died in service of the country.

"Veterans Day is about everybody who wore or continues to wear the uniform," he said. "It's a very select group of American citizens that have had the opportunity to do that."

Pretty much this

It's veterans day. Who gives a fuck about some stupid bitch and her fucking psychotic chimp. I'm glad her hands got eaten and her face ripped off. Chimps aren't pets. They belong in the wild, not in some suburban hellhole. People this stupid don't deserve to live.

The woman who got pulverized and maimed was not the owner of the chimp you fucking moron.

Ruff, maybe you missed it when it happened, but this was all over the news. It was a horrible story. Chimps are much stronger than humans, even though they're smaller. (For the nerds reading this, it has to do with longer muscle insertion points).

I thought for sure that tree hugger Evolutionist Ruff would give his great grandfather more credit!

Showing empathy towards a woman whose face got ripped off by a chimp doesn't shaft the Vets just because you're showing empathy towards her on Veteran's Day.

It wasn't her fault some stupid cunt was so selfish she had to have a unique exotic pet chimp.

Dude, chimps are vicious. There was a story a couple of years back about a married couple who had one, surrendered it to a refuge, and the damn chimp attacked him and bit his junk off when they went to visit. This is actually becoming a common story, which is stupid, because it means lots of people are keeping them..

Yeah Oprah is a ratings-hog, but people who just feel for the poor woman aren't in the wrong just for feeling sorry for her.

dude it wasn't her chimp, some stupid selfish bitch out there had to have a chimp pet and her selfishness caused someone to look like THAT.

This stuff makes me fear chimps now.

Sorry, I didn't look at the photos. :oops

I wasn't doubting that chimps are vicious, I was merely questioning the details - I've never heard of a chimp weighing 200lbs, and I was thinking they might be able to get a few fingers in their mouth, but not a whole hand. Then again, I'm looking at my own hands which are huge, whereas women's hands are generally pretty small, so my mistake.

I withdraw my objections given that I've been proven massively incorrect! I figured this might be some kind of set-up like the balloon boy, but boy was I wrong. :lol

Nah, that chimp, named Moe, only bit a cop and chewed some ladies finger off. Two other chimps attacked that couple when visiting Moe and chewed the husband's balls, nose and foot off. Plus, they took several chunks out of his ass and legs.

And this is definitely an American chimp:

Chimps should never be pets. I think a lot of people mistake them for orangutans (docile/gentle). If these people had ever taken the time to research chimpanzee's, they would know that they can be vicious almost to the point of being sadistic. In the wild there are many documented cases of several chimps holding one down while others rip him apart. When they reach there teenage years their entire demeanor changes drastically. Why the fuck would you want that in your house? :nope

I did a lot of volunteer work at a chimp sanctuary here in SA a few years ago when it was raided by the state for mis-management. They had at least 50 or 60 chimps there. The males reacted a lot better with females...They didn't like me at all because I was such a big male and they viewed me as competition/threat...they would jump up and down and scream and then shit in their hands and try to throw it at me...fortunately they were very bad shots...there was no way I was getting close to those bad asses...

Chimps in the wild:

murder
practice infanticide
cannibalize

You have to be insane to have one.

I forgot where I heard this, but it was from some animal expert guy..he was talking about how celebrities that own these types of animals, lions, bears, and whatever as pets..they often tell him that they own them and have never had problems with aggression..he said an obvious statement that seems to be ignored by these people, which is that all it takes is ONE attack and it's over for you..

Not that you are still arguing the point but Chimp's have pretty big mouths, and big teeth, including big canines. They aren't big when they are little but those old chimps have a pretty fearsome looking set of choppers.

That's the best picture I could find right now, but they get a lot bigger than that.

Chimps hell, even the little 60-70lb Gibbons can rip your arms out of their sockets. And I wouldn't cozy up to an Orangutan either, they are stronger than Chimps are.

I agree 100% with CBF. People that want to fuck around with these wild animals like they are just a dog or cat are idiots. And it's usually about control, attention or ego and it's hard to feel sorry for them when they are the dumbass and their dumbass action usually not only leads to their death or injury, but the animal's as well.

Or in this case a woman's life was thoroughly destroyed by a cute little monkey having an anxiety attack.

I bet that stupid woman did give him xanax regularly too...she seemed to think he was human in every other way so I don't know why she would draw the line there.

I don't care how docile people think they are...that is an illusion.

Yeah it's one thing if they work with animals and have a valid reason, even to educate people...but for a pet? Those people are truly idiots.

By far the biggest douchebag to ever live on this planet was that idiot that fucked around with those bears in Alaska.

Got himself, his girlfriend, and one of his precious bears killed.

I cannot understand why in the hell people consider that some kind of poignant story, as this dude was a total fucking idiot. And what he did prove? That Bears are predictably unpredictable and can kill you pretty easily.

It's one thing if he's trying do some kind of study, but this idiot was purely on an ego trip...taking his girlfriend out there like it was a typical camping trip or something. A true idiot.

One of the few recent occurances where whottt and i can smoke a bowl and agree to it.

That dude that danced with the bears was a selfish asshole. If you get away with that shit ten times, okay, post some papers, publish a book, produce a movie. But he had to kept on doing it. And doing it. And doing it. Thinking he was so god damn special and precious and his loved ones' connection with him was well worth risking for his selfish selfish tendencies.

Total jackass. I only hope people that selfish reap what they sow. I feel for this woman so much because she is the victim of the proclivities of some stupid selfish bitch who had to have a cool pet. A PET!!!!

I am telling you all straight up right now, if I ever get that physically maimed, I would demand that the doctor fucking kill me. That is not living. This poor woman said on Oprah how all she wants is to taste a pizza and a hamburger. And she can't because she has to be fed thru a tube the rest of her life. That is not living. It's like when you wake up from something so horribly skewed from what should be normal you wake up in an alternate world. Like an episode of Twilight Zone or Tales From The Darkside. Eventually you get slapped in the face that this is your life, this is reality. Call me a weakling, but I would never want to live like that. I'd want it to end.
