I think the consensus is #6 should be retired next year. The fans clearly agreed with Sean last night, when the cheered loudly when Sean said that #6 should be hanging right next to his. Sean Elliott gave AJ the highest praise, when he said that he might not have gotten that ring had they not had AJ on that team to push them every game, and not let them take a night off.
How can anyone not love #6?

I think a lot of fans want AJ's number to be retired. There are fans who feel, however, that it is not deserved. The thing that causes the problem is that there is no set criteria for a number to be retired. The call is made by the front office and the front office is going to do what they think is best for the organization and the fans. If the front office wanted to retire Tom Copa's #30...they could. Like him or not, AJ was and still is a fan favorite by a lot of people. As Jim said, you could hear that last night.

I for one do not feel AJ's jersey should be retired. He would be 3rd string on current Spurs as a PG and was the major reason that teams collapsed on Robinson all those years etc.

Since when did James Silas wear numbers 32, 6, and 31?
Besides...the Elliott jersey is on the other side...

When Manu Join the Spurs select the number 6, his number in Italy
But the Spurs say no ,because the 6 is the AJ Number
The first Photos with Manu in the Spurs are wearing the #6 and after he want the #10, the Speedy Claxton Numbers (Not Available)
After that, Manu chose the #21 and the Team sayed no, again, then he Chose the 20

Jersey retirement is about stuff like leadership, community involvement, character, and popularity, not just on-the-court exploits.
Who were:
Bob Love?
Bingo Smith?
Brad Davis?
Byron Beck?
Tom Meschery?
Mel Daniels?
Junior Bridgeman?
Malik Sealy?
Wendell Ladner?
Bobby Phills?
Dave Twardzik?
Larry Steele?
Lloyd Neal?
Sam Lacey?

Sean's election was fairly unanimous, but clearly AJ's isn't.
But after all the mentions during Sean's ceremony of "AJ maybe someday being up there", we have to conclude that those comments would not have been appropriate if within the group that makes/influences the retirement, the decision had not already been made.
So I'm assuming #6 is not "if", but "when".
Much more important and interesting, Spurs have a game today.

Malik Sealy?
Seally's number was retired because he was a ex St John's player who's star was rising on the TWolves, who was killed in 2000 by a fucking drunk driver. He was a great sm forward who had some serious mad skills. Malik was a great person as well. Minn loved him so much that they retired his number posthumously.
