Jordan's shot on Russell is #1 IMO, because it's the culmination of a pretty incredible performance. Here's how it went:

1. Game tied, about 50 seconds left, Jazz run a P&R, Stockton gets out for a wide-open three and buries it. Jazz up 3 and the Bulls title hopes look dead. (sidenote: Pippen was badly injured and would almost certainly not play a potential game 7)

42 seconds left in the game, Jazz up 3.

2. Bulls call timeout. Inbound the ball, Jordan curls right to the basket for an easy layup that only takes 3 seconds off the clock. Jazz up 1.

3. Jazz walk the ball up the floor. They post Malone on the left block. Hornacek cuts by Malone to try to get open on the weak side.

4. Malone thinks Jordan followed Hornacek, but he's really behind him. As Malone puts the ball on the floor, Jordan swipes down and knocks the ball free.

5. Malone falls down, trying to get the ball, but Jordan's got it. There's about 15 seconds left in the game, Bulls down 1, with virtually no shot at the title if they don't score here.

6. Jordan jogs the ball up the floor, crosses Russel over, gives him a very light push, Russell slips, Jordan drains the jumper. Bulls up 1 with 5 seconds left.

For me, there is nothing close to 6 above. Every single NBA fan in the world knew they were likely looking at Michael Jordan's last shot if it goes down, and the end of the Bulls dynasty if it didn't. Here's a re-enactment of it , using the medium of Obama Hope posters:

Russell was fouled though. That takes value from the play. By the way, he's attempting a come-back, he's been looking for a NBA contract for awhile (Byron Russell, not Jordan).

we have different ideas about which moments are most exciting in NBA, but we all clearly know what are your most exciting moments in your life. and your exciting moments are also the most exciting moments for your wife and your mom, or even your sisters if you have got some. fortunately you haven't got a daughter, Raper.

I would say Magic's last second hook shot in Game 4 of the Finals at Boston. Unbelievable play.

Good call IM. That play was unbelievable and decided the 2002 championship. Horry did it again in the 2005 Finals Game 5 in Detroit. Rasheed mistakenly left him open for a wide open three and that play decided the 2005 Finals.

The most exciting moment of the NBA Finals history:

2008 Finals: Capping a huge Celtics comeback, Ray Allen blows by " defensive specialist " Sasha Vajinacic, and scores the super easy 2.
Then the camera shows Vajinacic crying

Hell, that's not even the most dramatic play from that Knick playoff run. LJ with the four point play against the Pacers tops that IMO. And for my money the MDM was more exciting than both those, although there may be some Spurs bias.

And in the case of Fisher's shot... not only was it preceded by Duncan's shot... but also the end of the game...

:lol

That happened less than 30 feet from me...

Hey my friends

Do you guys really think that it's easy for a 8th seed to beat 1st seed in playoffs?

How many time have you guys ever watched that 8th seed beated 1st seed in the history of NBA?? 20? 10? 9??

and how many clutch shots and buzzer beaters have you ever watched?

I mean that clutch shots and buzzer beaters are always there
but "8th seed miracle" is not that easy

It's happened 3 times? I think the Sonics lost in 96? and the Knicks beat Miami in 99. and the Warriors in 07.

the greatest single shot is Jordan's shot against the Jazz.

here is #2, which could arguably be #1, because of everything that was at stake. there has never been a single shot that was made with more at stake than this one. MJ baby hook won a game, but not the series. MJ's shot against the Jazz was great, but even if he missed, they had another chance to win the series. this shot, the entire series was on the line. the cavs had just hit a shot to put them up by one, seemingly ripping the hearts out of a young bulls team. if he misses, they are sent packing. if he makes it, he sends the other team packing. it was also not a very easy shot to pull off either, with so little time on the clock.

the best part about this play, is that Phil Jackson was trying to draw a play up, when michael slammed his fist on the drawing board and said "gimmie the fuckin' ball."

No way is that play from MJ #2 imo. It was in the first round of the playoffs. If that happened in the second round or the ECF, I'd definitely put it up there.

Apart from Spurs moments, I really loved when The Warriors eliminated the Mavericks.

Every game of that series was incredible. The enviorment, the tension, the upset.

I remember having all my friends over for every game and rooting hard for the Warriors cause of our hatred for the Mavericks.

Also that series IIRC, was the highest view ratings in the NBA in years up to that point.

Only six games separated the #1 and #8 seeds in the East in 1999, so that year it wasn't really all that remarkable.

EDIT: I take it back. I think I'd still give Jordan's shot to win #6 the #1 spot. Bird's steal and assist to Dennis Johnson in game 5 of the 87 ECF is a clear #2 to me though.

Going by the the title of the thread, "the most exciting moment" i'd say that his shot against cleveland is as exciting as it can get. It may not have been as meaningful as other shots, including his own against the Jazz, but it certainly can be considered the most exciting MOMENT in NBA playoff history.

Probably the most improbable comeback ever. 13 points in 33 seconds. Four 3's, including a 4 point play, against the eventual champions and one of the greatest defensive squads ever, with Bruce Bowen all over you.

Magic's shot was the perfect setting, time and place for the most exciting shot. The two most storied franchises in basketball. Two of the greatest players in the history of the game in Bird and Magic going head to head. Probably the best role players and supporting cast on both teams compared to any other teams in history. And pure hatred of of both teams and cities.

I remember when Bird his his shot in the corner to go up, and all I thought about was Magic. Bird must have thought the same thing because you could see him telling Dennis to stay with Magic. When that shot went through my entire neighborhood was out on the streets cheering.

The 80's was a decade of pure joy for Celtics and Lakers fans. Fishers .4 was also great too. What made thses shots so great was they were preceded by other great game winning shots, Duncan and Birds.

That shot also broke the stranglehold the Celtics had over the Lakers.

Hands down, nothing comes close to that play in terms of context, history, rivalry, franchises involved. Hands down.

Some of the other crap was best play of the decade but NBA history? Lol...short history indeed.

That was amazing, but for comebacks nothing tops Isiah's 16 points in 94 seconds to force OT from down 8 in an elimination game (game 5 of the '84 first round between Detroit and New York).

Simple math would lead us to conclude that if T-Mac had 94 seconds, he would have scored close to 39 points in the amount of time it took Isaiah to score 16. Also, T-Mac's team was down more, and he won the game, as opposed to sending it to overtime.

13 in 33 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 16 in 94.

Jokes aside, they were both amazing. I still think T-Mac's comeback was more improbable, while Zeke's was obviously more meaningful.
