It might have been hard to tell from the 128-108 spanking the Suns took from the Celtics Sunday, but they have been much more active defensively since Alvin Gentry took over as head coach.

Even with Sunday's performance, the Suns are averaging almost three more steals per game than they did before the All-Star break. That has helped fuel their running game.

Center Shaquille O'Neal said it's a matter of simplification.

"It's because we're switching, and we know what to do," he said. "The reason guys were having problems knowing the rotations is because they would change every five minutes. Now we're sticking with one thing."

Unfortunately, the Celtics cleaned up some early turnover problems and then dominated.

"It was a good test for us," O'Neal said. "We still have to play our style, but against a team like that we've got to make stops. A team with so many weapons, you can't let all their weapons get off. If we want to talk about winning, that's how we've got to play."





Newsflash Bob Young: The Celtics just shot 63% without their best player and had their season high for points, if you're gonna write an assonine article, at least try to time it better.

Good question, I'm wondering how one gets to be a writer for the AZ republic, it seems like a certain lack of intelligence is required.

And saying that their defense is better because they're getting more steals demonstrates a complete lack of basketball understanding. For every time they gamble on D and get lucky with a steal, there are probably 5-6 times where the gamble leads to an easy bucket for the other team. Steals and blocks are both extremely overrated stats.

What the Suns kept on doing was making strides back to their court while their man is still shooting the ball. I guess their defensive scheme is to just outscore their opponents. It worked well against scrubs but didnt work out so well against a playoff team...

Na I was at the game and I couldn't believe that I actually heard the old couple next to me act like they were actually at a basketball game.

I wish the crowds at Phoenix games were like that of LA, Boston, Oakland, Portland, or Utah :depressed

And Oakland has the craziest crowds ever. Everyone in the crowd standing the entire game wearing those "we believe" T-shirts clearly affected Dallas.
