By David Moore / The Dallas Morning News

Scouting the Spurs

This will be the Spurs' first home game of the month. The team is sent packing this time every year when the rodeo is booked into the AT&T Center. San Antonio went 5-3 on its latest road excursion. ... San Antonio is 17-6 since Jan. 1. Only the LA Lakers have a better record during this stretch. ... Manu Ginobili is out with a stress reaction of the distal right fibula.

Scouting the Mavericks

The Mavericks have lost four of the last five meetings between the teams. ...Dirk Nowitzki is in a rare slump. The forward has averaged 10.5 points and gone 10-of-31 from the field (32.3 percent) over the last two games, his worst back-to-back output of the season. ...Antoine Wright continues to step up in Jason Terry's absence, averaging 14.8 points in the last five games.

I just intend to clear my vcash to zero.

Games between Mavs and Spurs are always rivalry contests, so I think Mavs will win by only 5pts or even less, but Mavs are gonna win anyway.

T-Mac: out for the season with a broken knee and pregnancy

Ron Artest: Keeps wasting shots and killing team chemistry

Rafer Alston: Continues his sucking performances in Orlando

the best guard on rockets team is Von Wafer that only earns 450,000 dollars per year. :lol

why did this spurs fan root for the rockets against our Mavs?

because spurs fans have already removed rockets from their rival list, now the only two contenders in SW are just Mavs and Spurs.

Now the only source for the rockets fans to gain some joy is just the loses of other teams, they should have based their joy on the victories of their own team but they've already realized that their team will never win a series in the post season.

It's true the rockets won two titles in 90s, and I really appreciate the rockets team of 90s that featured Olajuwon and drexler. but all their trophies have become memories that can only console the broken hearts of the rockets fans every time they got beaten by Jazz in the postseason.

Dallas (33-22) at San Antonio (37-17) Preview (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/preview?gid=2009022424&prov=ap)
Game info: 8:30 pm EST Tue Feb 24, 2009
TV: KTXA, My35
By Dan Pieringer

The San Antonio Spurs have been without reigning sixth man of the year Manu Ginobili since the All-Star break, while the Dallas Mavericks have gone two weeks without their own star sub, Jason Terry.

Neither team, however, seemed to miss its top reserve in its last game.

The Spurs return to play at the AT&T Center for the first time this month as the Southwest Division rivals square off Tuesday night.

Ginobili, who missed San Antonio’s first 12 games of 2008-09 following offseason surgery on his left ankle, is now expected to miss about two more weeks with a right ankle injury.

Terry, leading the league with 20.0 points per game off the bench, is also expected to miss several more weeks to recover from surgery on his left hand.

The Mavericks (33-22) got more than enough offense without Terry on Saturday night, when they routed Sacramento 116-95. They led 70-50 at halftime, enabling coach Rick Carlisle to turn to his bench early.

Brandon Bass had a season-high 20 points and fellow reserve James Singleton added a season-high 19 points with 12 rebounds as Dallas won for the third time in the five games of Terry’s absence..

“We just thought it was a good opportunity to let it ride with those guys,” Carlisle said of his bench. “They had a good rhythm. They were defending and they were scoring.”

The division-leading Spurs (37-17) also got much of their offense from an unfamiliar source Saturday. Roger Mason scored 25 points in a 98-67 blowout of Washington as San Antonio improved to 8-8 without Ginobili this season.

Mason, who spent the last two seasons with the Wizards, went 9-for-15 from the field - including 5-for-9 from 3-point range - while Tim Duncan and Tony Parker were held to 12 and nine points, respectively.

“I think I would have made a big impact (with the Wizards). Who’s to say?” Mason said. “You never know. That’s just the confidence I have. I’m just glad I made an impact on this team.”

The Spurs’ win capped 10,761 miles of travel over 19 days while their home court was occupied by the annual San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. San Antonio, which last played at the AT&T Center on Jan. 31, went 5-3 on the trip.

“Every year, we seem to make something out of it,” Duncan said. “There’s no way to deny it. Every year, we come out of this road trip a better team. We find a way to bond. We find a way to do something on the road. It works for us.”

That’s bad news for the Mavericks, who have dropped four of their last five against the Spurs. Dallas won 98-81 in San Antonio on Nov. 4, but fell 133-126 in double overtime in the teams’ last meeting Dec. 9 in Dallas.

Duncan led San Antonio with 32 points and 14 rebounds in that game, his fourth straight double-double against Dallas.

Mavericks All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki had 35 points and 10 boards in the double-overtime defeat. He’s averaging 32.5 points and shooting 50.9 percent (29-for-57) against the Spurs this season.

Nowitzki, though, has been held to 21 points and 10-for-31 (32.3 percent) shooting over his last two games.

Notes

Mavericks:

The Mavericks scored 70 first-half points en route to Saturday's blowout win over the Kings. ... Dallas has won seven of its last eight games at home. ... F Brandon Bass came up with 20 points off the bench, while F James Singleton had 19 points and 12 boards. ... The Mavericks controlled the glass all night, holding a 49-33 rebounding edge.

Spurs:

After finishing 5-3 on their annual eight-game road trip - which they take when the rodeo occupies the AT&T Center - the Spurs return home for a three-game set, beginning Tuesday against the division-rival Dallas Mavericks. ... G Roger Mason, who spent the last two seasons with the Wizards and grew up in Washington, D.C., torched his old team for 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting in Saturday's win. ... The Spurs have now won five straight meetings with the Wizards.

To be elite, Dallas Mavericks must beat the West's best on the road (http://www.star-telegram.com/287/story/1220796.html)
David Moore

SAN ANTONIO – The Mavericks crave upward mobility.

They refuse to rattle around in the back of the playoff pack, holding their breath from one day to the next as they cling to one of the final spots in the Western Conference.

Now, we'll see if they can do something about it.

Wins over Sacramento and New Jersey at home are nice. Heck, they're essential if this team has any hopes of cracking 50 wins.

But these Mavericks won't get any traction or move up in the standings until they start to win on the road against their prime competition.

Tonight's game against San Antonio falls into that category.

"To move up, you're going to have to win some tough road games," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's as simple as that. The other competition in the West has teams that are capable of doing it."

One reason the Mavericks languish around the No. 6 seed as they enter this week is because of their troubles on the road in the Western Conference.

Nine teams are jockeying for eight playoff spots. The Mavericks are 3-7 on the road against those other eight teams. The Mavericks haven't picked up a win against one of those teams since they beat Portland on Christmas night.

The trend extends even further. The Mavericks are 4-13 on the road against the best in the West since Jason Kidd's arrival last February.

"Look, we won at Miami, we won at Orlando," Carlisle said of the excursion that jump-started the Mavericks current push a few weeks ago. "We know we're capable of beating good teams on the road.

"The formula has got to be there. You've got to play consistently on defense and rebound. Offensively, you've got to be efficient and you've got to score enough points."

That's the problem. The Mavericks haven't been consistent on defense on the road. Their offense has been sporadic. Their bench has been erratic.

But there are signs of improvement, such as Friday's 93-86 loss in Houston.

"Well, look at that game," Kidd said. "We put ourselves in position coming down the stretch, but didn't execute and turned the ball over.

"It's there. We're right there. It's a matter of staying with it."

The Mavericks will have plenty of opportunities to break through.

The team returns to the American Airlines Center for three games after it faces the Spurs. Then, six of its next eight games are on the road. The Mavericks play in New Orleans, Phoenix, Portland and Los Angeles (the Lakers) in that stretch.

"I don't spend a lot of time analyzing and overanalyzing our situation with respect to who we have beaten lately on the road," Carlisle said. "What matters is right now, the next game. We've got to get ready to perform.

"We're dealing with the here and now and what is going on tomorrow. That's enough for us. We don't need to regurgitate the past."

If the Mavericks regurgitate past results on the road, they won't like what they see.

And they won't move up in the standings.

"We've got to find a way to win on the road against the good teams," Kidd said. "If we can do that, that will catapult us to that next stage."

A TOUGH ROAD

The Mavericks are 3-7 against Western Conference playoff contenders on the road.

Jerry Stackhouse resumes bench role with Dallas Mavericks (http://www.star-telegram.com/287/story/1220797.html)
By David Moore

SAN ANTONIO — Jerry Stackhouse’s comeback has been put on hold.

Stackhouse isn’t satisfied with how his foot has responded since his return from a three-month layoff. He met with Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle on Monday, and it was decided he would be deactivated for more recovery time.

"I’m a little down, but I’m not where I need to be," said Stackhouse, who did not make the trip to San Antonio for tonight’s game. "I don’t want to take minutes away from guys who deserve to be out there at this point.

"It’s hard, and it put [Carlisle] in a tough position, too. I know he wants to try to get me back, at the same time, where is the balance? We need to win games. Instead of putting myself and my teammates in a bad position, we thought it was best to step back and let me work it out on my own."

Stackhouse opened the season and played until Nov. 14 when the pain from plantar fasciitis and a bone spur in his heel became too great. He missed 45 games and returned four days ago against Houston.

The veteran guard failed to score and was 0-of-5 from the field in his two games. He played a total of 21 minutes and was never comfortable, saying he was tentative on the court.

"The foot isn’t right," Carlisle said.

Stackhouse said he will continue to work on regaining his strength.

Mavs will finish with a better record than the Rockets, take that shit to the bank. Neither team is going anywhere though, the Spurs aren't either.

Used to be a rivalry. Now you are catching a rested and ready Spurs team on their home court. I think it's gonna be ugly.

By "rested and ready" - do you mean with the same amount of time off as their incoming opponent?

And I love how Rogue gets everyone all pissed off. He's a troll magnet, especially for this djohn2008 fuckstick. Guy is living in a timewarp and thinks he's awesome by repeating the same droll bullshit we've all seen a thousand times before. If you're going to try to bag on Mavs fans, chief, come with something new. That stale shit doesn't bother any of us anymore.

Mavs' Stackhouse Returns To Sidelines

Mavericks swingman Jerry Stackhouse is back on the shelf after not being satisfied with how his injured foot responded after a three-month layoff.

He met with coach Rick Carlisle on Monday and has been deactivated.

"I'm a little down, but I'm not where I need to be," said Stackhouse. "I don't want to take minutes away from guys who deserve to be out there at this point.

"It's hard, and it put [Carlisle] in a tough position, too. I know he wants to try to get me back, at the same time, where is the balance? We need to win games.

"Instead of putting myself and my teammates in a bad position, we thought it was best to step back and let me work it out on my own."

He has been suffering from plantar fasciitis and a bone spur in his heel all season long.

This is obviously not going to be a real contest. I wouldn't be surprised if the Spurs were pressured by the NBA to keep the score at least somewhat close to help the ratings.

At any rate, when the evening is over the hapless mavs will go to bed -or to their dopepipes- with a fresh taste of Spurs ass in their mouths. :rollin:rollin

Dallas Mavericks (33-22) at San Antonio Spurs (37-17) (http://sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=nba/scores/live/pv10678.htm)

(Sports Network) - With their annual "Rodeo Road Trip" in the rear-view mirror, the San Antonio Spurs will welcome their Southwest Division rivals, the Dallas Mavericks, to the Alamo City for the opener of a three-game homestand.

The Spurs finished their annual trek in winning fashion on Saturday when Roger Mason burned his former team by scoring 25 points to lead San Antonio to a 98-67 rout of the lowly Washington Wizards.

Mason, who played for the Wizards from 2006-08 before signing as a free agent with the Spurs before this season, went 5-of-9 from three-point range.

Michael Finley had 19 points for San Antonio, which has won back-to-back contests after a two-game skid. They went 5-3 on the road trip.

Tim Duncan contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs, who beat the Wizards for the sixth straight time.

San Antonio, which is 18-7 at the AT&T Center, will finish its three-game residency with bouts against Portland and Cleveland.

The Mavs, who are 4 1/2 games behind San Antonio in the standings, also found themselves on the winning end of their most recent contest when James Singleton had a season-high 19 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, as Dallas used a 70-point first half to cruise past the Sacramento Kings, 116-95.

Josh Howard and Brandon Bass each scored a team-high 20 points for Dallas, which recorded its highest-scoring half of the season. The Mavs rebounded from a 93-86 loss at Houston last Friday, as Jason Kidd added 11 points and 11 assists in the win.

On the injury front, San Antonio star sixth man Manu Ginobili, who has been out since the All-Star break, is expected to miss two more weeks with a right ankle injury. Ginobili also missed San Antonio's first 12 games of the season after offseason surgery on his left ankle. Meanwhile, Dallas super-sub Jason Terry remains on the sidelines after left hand surgery.

The two teams have split a pair of meetings this season with each club winning on the other's home court. Most recently, the Spurs outlasted the Mavs, 133-126, in a double-overtime thriller in Dallas.

STARTING LINEUPS
POS - SPURS - MAVERICKS

PG - 9 Tony Parker (6-2, 8th yr) - 2 Jason Kidd (6-4, 15th yr)
Only John Stockton, Mark Jackson and Magic Johnson have more assists than Kidd.

SG - 8 Roger Mason Jr. (6-5, 5th yr) - 21 Antoine Wright (6-7, 4th yr)
Six double-digit scoring games in February for former Aggie Wright.

SF - 4 Michael Finley (6-7, 14th yr) - 5 Josh Howard (6-7, 6th yr)
Finley second on Mavericks' all-time 3-pointers list (870).

PF - 21 Tim Duncan (6-11, 12th yr) - 41 Dirk Nowitzki (7-0, 11th yr)
Duncan has had 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in 10 games, leading NBA.

C - 15 Matt Bonner (6-10, 5th yr) - 25 Erick Dampier (6-11, 13th yr)
Bonner will have his hands full on defense, drawing dreaded Dirk assignment.

Finley is still second? Not bad... Btw, the one in the lead is Dirk... a PF who has made already 1,063 3's in his career.

They're rested and ready to play-this is the kick off to the playoffs. This will be a great test for the Spurs. Since both teams are without Jet and Manu, tonight will be all about purpose and execution. Spurs are going to have to win and keep on winning even without Manu, so we can remain 2nd seeds.
:downspin:

If it's close, Spurs by 6, if not, it will be a blowout. But usually these teams play it hard and close until the end. I'm really interested in seeing how Hill and Mason produce tonight. I'll be at the game tonight. You all better have some good commentaries for me to read when I get home! GO SPURS!

It was exactly like I predicted. Not even a contest. And with BOTH Manu and Tim out.

However the hapless mavs are such a douche of a team that the Spurs should not get a false sense of security and think that they are suddenly invincible. Next game against a decent team worthy of a NBA spot will be much better indicator of the Spurs current status.

At any rate it was fun to laugh our asses off to the Dallas Academy mavs and their ineptitude and total lack of heart and character. :rollin
