Over at GWHoops, Mister Days says Pops has been signed by the Spurs, who are Austin's mother team. Pops has been tearing it up in the D-League, including 39 and 18 in his last game (yes, 39 points) so I hope he gets some time with the NBAers. I've also read that he's been hitting midrange jumpers, and his free throw percentage is 70%.

Pops has signed with the spurs. Had a few choices, but signed this afternoon. Look for the official news tonight or tomorrow
And Pops isn't playing with Toros today...

Didn't they sell Bonsu knives that cut through rock and kevlar and stuff.
With Tim and Manu out, the Spurs will play small and fast. Mensah-Bonsu could be effective in a Franny Elson role right away. The timing on this could be very good for him.

A "look" it may be. My guess is that it's a 10 day. Salary experts chime in: wouldn't anything else be fully guaranteed for the remainder of the season?
Yes, and I doubt it's only a 10-Day. He had other offers. The Spurs would just build in options.
Besides, who else are they going to sign? Rasho and Joe Smith are now doubtful buyouts.

Im excited they finally signed this guy! I've been waiting for them to sign him. Not sure how his game will translate to the nba but its worth a shot. From watching this interview i really like his attitude, he seems to want to do anything it takes to make it in the nba. He's taken the long road to the nba like other spurs such as bruce, ime and roger. Hope it works out for him and the spurs.

This final stretch of games, thru the end of the regular season, will hopefully give him an opportunity to get some much-needed playing time. Besides, Duncan needs as much rest as possible. I remember reading somewhere that the soreness, that Duncan is experiencing in his knee, has been a season-long condition that flares up occasionally. Apparently, he's been a warrior and has been pushing through.

he is 6'9". from what i can tell, he may be able to become a powe type of player for the spurs. clean up around the rim for easy baskets and rebound. i don't know about his defense though. without thomas' defensive intelligence and strength, he might be a liability against taller centers and PFs.

I'm hoping, with his athletic ability, the spurs coaching staff can teach him how to play a little better defense. I mean come on they have gotten bonner to play decent defense. If they can teach him some defensive skills hopefully he could match up with players like Lamar Odom and David West.

London's finest, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, the D-League leader in both scoring at 26.6 per game and rebounding with 13 per game, is headed to San Antonio according to an email from his agent.
He's simply been dominating the D-League, so this should come as no surprise, as San Antonio is the best in the business at utilizing the D-League. They'd already signed Malik Hairston and Blake Ahearn to 10-day contracts this year, along with bringing in DerMarr Johnson, Bobby Jones, Jeremy Richardson, Keith Langford, and Marcus Williams.
Here's what I wrote about Pops this morning: 2. Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Austin -- Pops is killing it at this level, in the box scores anyway. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to watch a full game of his, but in the comments yesterday (http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2009/2/23/768381/call-pops-up-and-other-d-l#comments) from Jon L, he noticed that Pops isn't the greatest defender out of the block and he doesn't box out well. The Pops apologist inside tells me that he's already averaging 26.6 points and 13 boards to go with 2.5 blocks, imagine if he starts to apply himself. However, I can't overlook the fact that it doesn't seem as if he's applying himself. Granted, he probably assumes he's not on some of these guys level, but with a guy like Pops, his motor is going to be a big reason for him getting an opportunity.

Is Tim OK? What does he need for it? A few days rest?
I just read earlier this year that he has chronic soreness in his knee. Of course, knowing Tim he would never complain about it. He simply pushes through.
http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117964
Though Duncan recently disclosed that his knee has been sore much of the season, he had gone through the team's morning shootaround without incident.
This is why I fear him having more of a heavy workload as he gets older. At this stage of his career he needs more help and less minutes on a regular basis in order to preserver his remaining years.
Let's see if Pops can provide some depth.

True. Even if Spillter doesn't join, the Spurs will most certainly add Ian to the rotation. If all those scenarios come true, the Spurs will have instantly remade and overhauled their frontline. They become woefully unathletic to supremely athletc.

first off, Pops has never ever met Scola in a game, not exactly a strong foundation for a claim that he has owned him.
when you refer to this Spanish league game, when Pops met Splitter, you should not withhold the fact that Splitter had 17 points on 8-8 FG in just 19 minutes PT in that game. getting owned looks a bit different in my book.

I would be floored if somehow Tiago decided to join the Spurs next season. Economically, his situation likely will be no different than it is now. Tau will be able to offer him more money and Spurs will be financially hamstrung again. In my mind, the Spurs should go after Rasheed Wallace regardless.

SenorSpur
02-25-2009, 12:20 PM
Pops was and still is a very raw basketball player. Back during his stint with the Mavs, he had "0" offensive capabilities. They liked him, but didn't necessarily have time to develop him. Once they found Brandon Bass, who is really a more polished version of Pops, it made him sort of expendable.
Besides being a rebounding and shotblocking phenom, which he's always been, apparently, Pops can now convert from 5-10 ft range. I don't know how consistently he can do that. I'll defer to Chump and others who have watched him in D-League for that analysis.

Seriously, Pops is 6'10 in tennies right? Do you really think he's big enough and girthy enough to really help us out? He's gained some pounds but he doesn't seem that big to me in the clips I've watched. I hope he really is. What do you think? :hat
However it pans out,we should still go after someone like Sheed in the summer.
Supposedly he measured 6-9 in shoes at the pre-draft camp. It's possible that he's grown some since then. I'm rooting for the guy to prove me wrong here, but all I see is an undersized PF with limited to no skills who's getting by in the NBDL by simply being a better athlete than everyone else. If the team need is for a guy who can guard skilled 6-10+ power forwards and centers, I really don't think this is the guy.

more likely than not, he provides the youth and atheleticism to rebound and they have conceded trying to get everything needs wise when they have guys who are decent defenders a la KT, so they are opting for youth athleticism and strong rebounding so they can interchange based on need. Rebounding I have to believe won out despite a lack of defensive ability or perhaps they feel his defense is good enough and they can help him along the way.
Has this been officially announced yet?

Hairston dunked on Yao in the preseason, I want him to do it in the season, a la Al Jeff. Hopefully Pops was bad on D in the D-League because he was disinterested. Like senor said he said(I'm assuming in the interview while sitting on the bed, I didn't watch more than a minute), he will play like a man possessed tonight if Pop gives him a chance.
I hope the game is a blowout, one way or the other, so Hill, Ime, Hairston, Pops, and Fab get the lions share of the minutes, with maybe a little Bonner and JV thrown in. I want all the new youngs guys to be on the floor at the same time at some point(possibly the future if Pops stays the season), maybe with KT and Tony, since KT proved to be the best big last night. He really steps up with Tim out, especially in OTs.

I'm talking about because of the level, like Ian not looking great in the summer league, he was bored with that level of competition. If he'd had a chance in the preseason, I think he would've shined.

Spurs add Pops (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/)
By Jeff McDonald
The Spurs have filled their 15th roster slot with a 25-year-old Englishman named Pops.
Pops Mensah-Bonsu, the talk of the NBA Developmental League, signed a 10-day contract with the Spurs on Wednesday. Mensah-Bonsu, a 6-foot-10 forward, averaged 26.6 points, 13 rebounds and 2.4 assists in eight games with the Austin Toros.
On Feb. 22, he turned in a 39-point, 18-rebound game against Colorado.
Mensah-Bonsu played collegiately at George Washington University, but went unselected in the 2006 draft. He appeared in 12 games with Dallas that season before landing in the D-League.
The signing of Mensa-Bonsu takes the Spurs out of consideration for other free-agent buyout candidates. He should provide needing depth on the front line for the Spurs, especially with Tim Duncan battling a sore knee.

why the talk of Splitter as if he's even plausible for next season?
When he re-upped with Tau it gave him one window of opportunity for a buyout, summer 2010.
He has no buyout clause for 2009.

Spurs Sign Pops Mensah-Bonsu
SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed free-agent forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu to a 10-day contract.
The 25-year-old Mensah-Bonsu had most recently been playing with the Austin Toros, the Spurs NBA D-League affiliate. His best game with the Toros came on 2/22 vs. Colorado where he had 39 points and 18 rebounds in 47 minutes.
Mensah-Bonsu was signed by the Dallas Mavericks after going unpicked in the 2006 NBA Draft. During the 2006-07 season he appeared in 12 games with the Mavericks, averaging 2.4 points and 1.0 rebounds in 5.9 minutes. That season he also appeared in 26 games for the Fort Worth Flyers of the D-League, averaging 15.8 points and 10.4 rebounds in 30.7 minutes. Mensah-Bonsu was selected to the 2007 D-League All-Star Game where he captured MVP honors after scoring 30 points and grabbing 7 boards.
The 6-10, 240-pound forward was born in London and played collegiately at George Washington University. He spent four years with the Colonials finishing his career second on the school’s all-time blocks list (141) while earning Atlantic-10 All Conference First Teams honors during his senior year.

2) Pops will be in the DLeague as a free agent.

Draftexpress measured him in 2006 as 6' 7.5" in bare feet and 6'9" in sneakers. It's not impossible that he could've grown a bit more since then, but more likely it's that added inch or so that almost all NBA players get when their teams list their supposed heights.

Quick question: why would this take us out of consideration for another possible buyout? I know that we now have 15 on our roster, but if Joe Smith were to get cut loose why would we not be able to cut another player (Vaughn, Hairston, or even Mensa-Bonsu) to make room for him?

In order for the player like a Joe Smith or Rasho to be bought out...it will have to happen by tomorrow.

you have to be signed by this weekend to be eligible for the playoff roster.
that is why the Knicks and Marbury are in a hurry to make something happen right now too, so he can sign somewhere else for the playoffs.
Not quite. Players just need to be cut by this weekend, but they don't have to be signed by then. The rule is that you can't be on one team's roster on March 1st and then be eligible to play in the playoffs for a different team. Marbury could have waited until the last day of the regular season to sign with Boston and the Celtics would still have been allowed to use him.

The savior?????
Saw him in college and he was pretty spectacular at times for GWU but he is at least 2 inches shorter than Duncan but has hops.
Pops has hops? Oooh, that's tops.

Normally I'd say very little but with Duncan out and Oberto's thumb, he might actually get a little time

Francisco elson. If pops has a higher bball iq then he might be fine.

From what I remember of him at GWU, while both are largely limited (offensively) to dunking, PMB isn't nearly as bball IQ bankrupt as Francisco Elson.

If he can be smarter than elson and bring what elson brought basketball wise; then he's gonna be great.

well Elson's a 7-footer, which is the big difference..
Pops will definitely get a shot..
Tolliver got his shot, Farmer got his shot, and now Malik has been getting a shot..there's no doubt that Pops will, since Duncan is hurt..
In eight games with the Toros, he averaged 26.6 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.50 blocks in 39.8 minutes.
Mensah-Bonsu will wear uniform #54.

i'm hoping he'll give us at least 5-6 ppg, but more importantly give us about 6-7 rpg, maybe 8-10 but i'll probably be pushing it, though.

by saying that you're acting as if you seen him play already in the dleague and think he is a scrub or something.
his mpg/playing time is probably a direct result of his dedication/pop-satisfactory level/etc. it's not like popovich/the staff is wasting their time signing useless guys just for the heck of it.

It comes from watching Pop deal with end-of-the bench guys for years and years. Don't take it personal, that's just the way it is.

Next team with size would be the Clippers, hope Pops has been given a chance to earn minutes by then, so we could possibly see him on Kaman or Camby or "insert third Clippers big here".
