The Life of an Advance Scout (http://www.nba.com/spurs/timeout/20secondto.html)

It was great to see Mike Wells in Detroit last Thursday. As an advance scout, "Wellsy" is usually a step or two ahead of the Spurs on the schedule. He prepares the scouting report on upcoming Spurs' foes, so therefore it's not all that common to actually see him at a Spurs' game.

With well over a decade of experience in the NBA in a variety of positions with three different organizations, Wells is a guy with an in depth knowledge of personnel and strategy. During our pregame visit on the Spurs Radio network, he chimed in on the trade deadline that had passed that day and how Rafer Alston might fit in as Jameer Nelson's replacement at the point in Orlando and other hot topics.

Advance scouts like Wells are behind the scenes and out of the spotlight. They travel non-stop and work long hours to make sure their fellow staff members are well equipped on the latest on court developments regarding teams around the league. They stay connected and plugged in and most are very detail oriented.

Advance scouts might not garner much attention, but they are a valuable resource as the coaching staff prepares for an upcoming game.
