Defensive rotations > monster man dunks
Jumping over everyone, being strong, having good feet and hands and dunking with force > Defensive rotation.
Those dunks weren't a result of poor D.
And if they did play excellent D he's going to end up at the free throw line more than not with that type of aggressive play.

Helluva 2nd unit.
I was hoping Pops would get time in a blowout. However, I was hoping for a blowout victory - not a blowout loss. I missed most of Pops dunks as I fell asleep during the late 3rd, early 4th. Gonna stay up and watch the game again - just to see Malik and Pops again.

Not as far as Popovich is concerned.
I wasn't talking about the Cavs D...i was talking about his.
He's explosive and i liked watching him, but it's difficult to evaluate his overall game because of who he was playing against.
I hope he can contribute, but this isn't NBA live...you can't just start throwing oops from half court whenever he comes into the game.

I was talking about his defense. My bad, i should have clarified.
I really did like him out there, i thought he looked good...but he's not gonna get minutes if he can't be a presence on the defensive end (no matter how many monster man dunks he throws down). I guess I'd really just like to see how he handles himself against a first or second unit.

really want him to play a leon powe role on the spurs for the playoffs. sporadic minutes is probably his best case scenario. adds contagious excitement and energy to energize the bench players to be more aggressive. can keep momentum going when some starters sit. all will be great contributions if he's up to it.

I loved his game today. Definitely got the crowd going. Well, he dunked over big Z pretty well and drew the foul. His rebounding looked a bit shaky and his defense was ok for a new player. I am pretty sure a few more practices with the team and he just might convince the FO to sign him for real.

I'm surprised a good amount of people said he needs a lot of work on defense, I thought he hustled and tipped a fair amount of balls, he blocked daniel gibson's layup as well. He fouled a few people, but that was just while he was contending them to make sure they didn't get wide open layups, I didn't think they were silly fouls. And for the people that said his rebound was shaky, didn't he come up with like 3 contested offensive rebounds, and finished with like 6 rebounds in 11 or so minutes? I agree he's still adjusting to the system, but his defensive and rebounding effort was there, I thought he played well pretty much in all aspects, certainly he still has room to improve though and I agree with the people that said he needs to play against better people to show his skills.

His rebounding and athletiscm are his highlights.
He did have a block and contested layups but, his defense needs work. His rotation needs a lot of work. And there a couple plays he didn't attempt to contest jumpers from the baseline. He was a little lacksidasical on the open court...perimeter d. I can see him as being a Defensive liabilty against better players...for now. Just needs to learn the system better and improve d.
It looks like anything around the basket is his territory though. Blocks, rebounds, dunks

Of all basketball fans, I'd never expect the Spurs fans to be the ones to fall in love so quickly with a player like Pops Mensah-Bonsu. He's clueless defensively, he's much better suited to play for an uptempo team, he struggles to do simple fundamental things like pivot off a screen or to guard the post on side-denial, but he makes a few dunks and he suddenly becomes pathetically overpraised? You should know better. Or maybe not, you've never gone through the likes of Dee Brown, Ron Mercer or, even worse, Kendrick Brown and Gerald Green...

Pops did well on his first outing against scrubs. Whether he will contribute on a regular basis will depend on Coach Pop. I liked the energy that he brought and he has picked up some basics plays that the team runs from his time playing with the Austin Toros. He is not the big that I would have liked to see us add, but he is long and can help us with rebounds. Let's see what he can do against starters if he is given the chance by Coach Pop. GSG!!!

Most know he has alot of deficiencies - but even with that he brings the Spurs something they dont have. Length, athleticism and energy at the 4. Hes not the caliber of player of these guys, but players like Landry, Bass and Leon Powe are all extrememly limited as basketball players, but they make up for it with toughness, energy, hustle and athleticism - and bring alot to their teams.

I can see his future play as being stipulated. When our frontline can't keep up with a smaller or more athletic line up then he is key. Then you have garbage time for blow outs. Either way good to have in the arsenal. I like his desire for the ball.
I think Kurt Thomas and Pops would be great complement.

Defensive rotations > monster man dunks
The Spurs don't care one iota about monster dunks. Pops was regularly out of position on defensive rotations. I realize that the Spurs defense is probably the most difficult in the league to learn, but Pops is not going to get any meaningful minutes short of injury or major foul trouble the rest of the season. Everyone needs to put down the crack pipe. By the time he got in the game the outcome was decided. The Cavs defense wasn't playing with the intensity it did to start the game. Hey, I hope he turns into the second coming of David Robinson, but to judge anything off of his performance Friday night is merely wishful thinking.:nope

Outside of Tim, none of our post players have a well rounded game. They all have strengths and weaknesses.
Fab and Bonner can't rebound to save their lives. Our inability to get offensive rebounds hurts us.
Pops, despite his many fundamental shortcomings, can rebound. It's up to Pop how he uses all our post players. Up until very recently we were going with a 3 man post rotation. That's almost like a playoff rotation. We can't keep that up. To me it isn't inconceivable that Coach throw Pops in the game if no one else is playing well and rebounding is needed.
If Pops shows a dedication to learning and the right attitude, even if he makes mistakes, then I think the Coach Pop might give him more chances. How much? Who knows?

I agree; we badly need athleticism in the paint to complement Duncan.
Sometimes, coaches shouldn't be afraid of throwing a raw athlete in the battle, if it that addresses a big need.
Sometimes, it can pay off really well; It has already happened: a coach trusting a young player, even if he is lacking this and that; trust is huge

Not related, Duncan's my specialty.
That pic is from the Spurs Home Court calendar this year.

http://static.eventful.com/images/thumb/I0-001/001/178/907-8.png Should Pops Mensah-Bonsu have a bigger role in tonights game versus the Portland Trail Blazzers? If so and performs great like Friday versus the Cavaliers should he be signed to a contract?
I love that "snap, crackle, Pops" comment Sean made. If Pops sticks around, this slogan will too...:toast
We need one more big guy for the Spurs to really feel confident they can beat LA and win the Championship. I cringe everytime I see fricking Gausol and Odem clogging up that middle and converting offensive rebounds into points--making it damn hard for Spurs to penetrate (and, this is without Bynum). Spurs need help. So, Bottom line:
If we can't buy ourselves a big. WE NEED SOME ATHLETICISM in the middle-some rebounding, blocks. Dammit Pop let Pops play so we can see if he has what it takes to be a Spur. So, play him tonight, you've been experimenting all season.:stirpot:
If Pops does well, reward him with a contract.

Can Pops play small forward? He is quick and he moves his feet very well. He could he be the athletic 3 we have been looking for.
