Thunder release F-C Joe Smith (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=txthunderjoesmith&prov=st&type=lgns)

The Oklahoma City Thunder released forward-center Joe Smith, the team announced Sunday.

With his release coming on March 1, Smith would not be eligible to appear in the playoffs if he were acquired by another club.

The Boston Celtics were rumored to be interested in the veteran big man, but instead signed forward Mikki Moore and guard Stephon Marbury to bolster their bench.

Smith was sent to the Thunder on August 13, 2008 - along with guard Desmond Mason - in a three-team trade that sent guards Luke Ridnour and Adrian Griffin to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 6-10 Smith appeared in 36 games for Oklahoma City this season, averaging 6.6 points and 4.5 rebounds in 19.2 minutes.

That's inaccurate. Players waived after March 1 are ineligible.

Any chance we could get Swift? He could be handy.

But I think Joe Smith would be nice.

Joes Smith gets about his game in tough workman-like fashion. I've always thought he'd be a goood fit on this Spurs team and would compliment Tim's game well. It's a damn shame the Spurs are not under consideration from what's been reported.

I don't see exactly how Smith would give us something valuable we don't already have.

:lol Im confused by your response. Ok, im an Aussie, i can't help that. It's 6pm here so im wide awake and you did offer the yawn.

Look what im saying about Smith is he offers good length and i dont mean just height. He will take on the best opposition bigs including centers easing the pressure on Tim . He can defend the post in a hard-nosed way and has very reliable jump-shot from short range. Another plus, he doesn't require touches. The guy will go about his business. He's younger than Kurt, yet has the veteran experience the Spurs are going to need in the play-offs.
