The Washington Redskins released defensive end Jason Taylor after both sides failed to restructure his contract.

Taylor was scheduled to make $8.5 million this season, but the team needed the cap room for a six-year, $54 million contract signed last week by cornerback DeAngelo Hall.

According to a source, Taylor was asked by the Redskins to take part in 75 percent of their offseason workouts. That would require him to be at the Redskins' facility during eight of the 13 weeks of the offseason program, three days a week.

Family took precedence over the money.

With three children, Taylor, who has a home in the Miami area, opted not to agree to the workout provisions. The team was willing to keep his restructured salary at $8.5 million, but his desire to be with his family in the offseason was more important in his life.

Taylor, a six-time Pro Bowler, came to the Redskins from the Miami Dolphins for a second-round choice in 2009 and a sixth-rounder in 2010.

The 34-year-old Taylor has 120.5 career sacks.

Despite his departure from the Dolphins, Taylor is still interested in continuing his NFL career.

Stuuuuuupid move. I'd say come to Indy but we already have two Pro Bowl DEs.

eh. his price tag was way above his production. people should remember that the skins wouldn't have traded for him last year if they didn't have their #2 & #4 DEs go down with injury during the first week of camp.

What????????????????

U are talking about Synder. He would have paid for Taylor no matter who went down. This year he moved his money to another player. Talyor will be productive for a team next year.

if they were going to go after taylor for his own sake, they would have made the move A LOT sooner.

instead, they seemed alright with carter & daniels at the DEs spots. then, during the first week of training camp, they lost daniels and alex buzbee to season ending injuries.

in a panic (but seemingly necessary at the time) move they snatched up taylor.

as i mentioned in another thread, Snyder gets more credit for spending that he probably deserves. would you be surprised to know that this is only the 4th time in 10 offseasons that he has given out a major contract? (albeit that he usually gives out 2 or 3 in the same offseason when he does it)

No surprise here, he was injured half the season and he has really lost alot of speed of the ball.

the difference being that the old rotting vets on the Patriots actually do something helpful for the team.

maybe. but without hindsight, you couldn't know that taylor would be injured most of the year or that demetrius evans would step and play adequately at the other end spot.

they had 3 healthy DEs at the time (1 of which was the 230 lb Chris Wilson) and they actually got Parcells to lower the price that he was asking for before the draft.

if taylor hadn't gotten hurt right before the season, he probably finishes with 8-10 sacks and is well worth a second rounder.

interesting to note that after releasing taylor, even with the haynesworth/hall/dockery contracts, Washington is 12 million under the cap again.

Also interesting to note that they will need all of it to be contenders in their division.

does anybody even know anymore?

of the 4 teams, washington is the only one that looks like they've improved themselves thus far - on paper at least. philly has been losing players left and right, dallas has been quiet, and there's really no way to know how the giants will react to rolling through the regular season then being 1 & done in the playoffs.

now, free agency still has weeks left and the draft is still on the horizon - so a lot can change.

but - with what we know right now - would anybody really be shocked if any one of those 4 teams wins the division next year?

I really hate the Giants, but I have to favor them looking into the division objectively. They've really re-stocked/reloaded their defense which it was made them so successful when they won the Super Bowl. The only question mark I can see on their part is the WR position. They've got a group of youngins and no-names (not that a name means anything, but it hurts to lose one without a solid replacement).

Too bad he's not a few years further past his prime, a locker room cancer or a criminal awaiting trial, or the Cowboys would express some interest in him.

Hey with Canty gone, don't be surprised if Jerry calls up Jason.
