View Full Version : How rumors start...

As a Broncos fan, I was getting upset with all the rumors swirling around this weekend about Jay Cutler getting traded. This got me to talking with another fan about how easy it is to start a rumor that gets picked up by national outlets.

So what he decided to do was make up a rumor and "Harkov" posted it on the front page of broncosfreaks.com.

This is what happened
http://broncosfreaks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21418

PFT.com took it from our front page and decided to run with at as an actual rumor.

Since they first posted it, Si.com, yahoo.com, peter king, colin cowherd, and the cleveland plains dealer have all reported it as a rumor and close to happening.

The funniest part of all of this is whenever someone lists the unnamed source they are talking about me.

Don't know why the broncosfreaks.com link isn't working, but to make a long story short. He posted on the front page a rumor that Jay Cutler was close to being traded for Brady Quinn and Shaun Rogers.

What we hoped would happen is that a few more websites would like the rumor, and that we'd be able to laugh at the idiots that used our baseless rumor as news.

We got way more than we had ever hoped. Peter King talked about it, Colin Cowherd talked about it on his show, SI.com had it in the truth/rumos page, yahoo sports ran a story, cleveland plains dealer ran a report, etc.

It's funny as hell.

it really just shows how stupid the fucking rumors on sites like pft.com or even hoopshype.com are. Made up by some idiot (like me) at a computer wanting to create waves. Stupid people like Peter King and Colin Cowherd get paid huge salaries and they don't even check were a freaking rumor originated from before bringing it to a national audience. Pretty pathetic.

Of course when Cutler hears of this rumor, if he hasn't already, it will further fuel his fire, and make him even that more unhappy with the new management!

Several folks have advised us today that the “Internet rumor” regarding a trade involving Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler and others for Browns quarterback Brady Quinn and others was completely made up.

And some of those folks think that this means that we need to cram the toothpaste back into the tube because we suggested that the rumor had legs.

We didn’t, and we were careful to be clear about that. As always, however, we rely upon our readers having the ability to, you know, read.

Sometimes, frankly, some of them can’t.

The point of our story was that Cleveland could be a potential destination for Cutler, if the Broncos feel compelled to move him in light of the near-miss effort to trade him.

To be clear, here’s what we said, to illustrate the possibility that the Browns possibly could secure Cutler.

“And there are indeed as of this posting an old-fashioned, unsubstantiated, poo-on-the-wall ‘Internet rumor’ regarding a deal that would send Brady Quinn and Shaun Rogers to the Broncos for Cutler and a third-round pick.

“To be crystal clear, we are not reporting that a trade is or could be happening. In fact, given the top-secret manner in which the Browns handled the Kellen Winslow trade, we’re confident that word of such a transaction would not leak. Our contribution to this one is only that it’s believed that coach Eric Mangini and G.M. George Kokinis would be interested in Cutler.”

That’s it. So we didn’t start the rumor, and we were clear to say that we weren’t reporting that it was or could be occurring. In fact, we expressly called it a “poo-on-the-wall” rumor.

And, in all candor, we worked the “Internet rumor” in to the story because: (1) we’d had the “Cleveland would be interested in Cutler” on our list of stories all day but hadn’t gotten to it; and (2) if we’d posted it without acknowledging the poo-on-the-wall “Internet rumor” of which we were aware because a couple of readers had sent it to us, we would have been flooded with e-mails that we were trying to claim the “Internet rumor” as our own work product.

So we stand by what we wrote — based on discussions with our sources with knowledge of the guys calling the shots in Cleveland, the Browns would be interested in Cutler.

Of course, none of it matters now, if the Broncos mean what they say when they say they won’t trade Cutler.

We’ll continue to keep our ears and eyes open for an “Internet rumor” that they don’t.

Hey what's up? This is Tree from Dawgbones.com. I am a huge Browns fan, and that is what has brought me to your site. We even mentioned your site and linked to this thread as part of our discussion on the topic, both on Scout.com on the Orange and Brown report and on Dawgbones.

I would like you to confirm something for me. I have a poster on our website who is attempting to take credit for starting the rumor that you posted on BroncoFreaks.com. I know that the poster is full of it and all I would need to out him is the time that your Bronco's Trade Rumor article was posted. I know it was posted on the 2nd, but there is no time stamp. Please if possible confirm the time you posted the article.

For the last time asswipe, read the original thread. At 06:54 PM on March 2nd, I proposed that we trade Quinn and Rogers for Cutler and their third round choice. The proposed terms of the trade originated with me and only me. Someone in Denver read it, published it as if it was really happening and the internet guy published it at 11:39 pm on March 2nd, fully 6 hours after I first published it. I can't help it your such an illiterate tool you can't even read a date and time on the postings on the thread. Guess they accept anyone in the armed forces these days, including the ones who can't read!

Here's the original post which was allegedly posted at 6:54PM on March the 2nd. You can see he is an hour off from his other claim above. I'm trying to pin down the official time the poster claimed to have posted the fictitious deal.

Well Denver management has really screwed the pooch, now haven't they? Here they are with a franchise QB, a guy heralded as the second coming of Brett Farve. A strong-armed, intelligent, tough-minded blossoming superstar, and they get caught trying to deal him to Tampa and Minnesota to get their hands on Matt Cassel. Understandably, Cutler has soured on Bronco managment, and the rift may be too great to bridge.
Luckily, Denver's loss can be Cleveland's gain. Since Cutler is reputedly still on the market, the Browns ought to throw their hat in the ring.
So here's the proposed trade: For Jay Cutler and Denver's number two draft choice, I propose sending Shaun Rodgers and Brady Quinn to Denver.

This trade will give us at least three number two draft choices, allow us to possibly trade back in the first round, pick up a fourth number two and pick Rodgers replacement in B.J. Raji. We can then use those four picks to pick up and inside linebacker, a pass rushing olb, a center, and possibly a wide out to recover from the Stallworth debacle. In short we can rebuild the D-line, the linebacker corps, the o line, the wide receiver corps, have a franchise qb, and still have DA in reserve as a backup or even as trade bait if we feel we can acqurie a competent veteran back up.
Unless you're a total Quinncrusher, it's hard to see how you would not be totally enthusiastic for this

Broncos, Cutler reach a stalemate; Denver now accepting trade offers

by Peter King

Apparently convinced that their rift with Jay Cutler is irreconcilable, the Broncos have decided to pursue a trade for their disgruntled quarterback before the April 25 draft.

In a stunning turn of events, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen released a statement at 9 p.m. ET Tuesday saying both he and coach Josh McDaniels had been unable to get Cutler to call them back over the last 10 days.

Bowlen said he spoke with Cutler's agent, Bus Cook, on Tuesday and came away convinced "that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos."

Therefore, Bowlen said, "We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded."

This development is in stark contrast to what the Broncos' stance was at the NFL meetings last week. McDaniels, who created a firestorm of discontent with Cutler when he attempted to secretly trade him in February and the trade failed, seemed certain last week week he would be able to mend fences with Cutler in a private meeting.

A source Tuesday night said McDaniels felt he was at the point of no return with Cutler and had no choice but to pursue a trade.

Among the teams certain to be interested are Tampa Bay, the New York Jets and Detroit, which holds the No. 1 pick in this year's draft. But the Lions may have been swayed to pick Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford No. 1 overall after his impressive workout Tuesday on the Georgia campus.

Other teams are likely to be interested, including Cleveland, Minnesota, San Francisco and possibly Carolina. It's a virtual certainty that the Bucs and Jets, both without a bonafide No. 1 quarterback entering the draft, will bid aggressively for Cutler.

Cutler, 25, was the Broncos' first pick and 11th overall in the 2006 draft. Although his record as a starter is only 17-20, he is widely considered to be a player a team can install at quarterback and not worry about the position for the next decade.

He threw for 4,526 yards in 2008, but his relationship with the franchise soured after the man who drafted him, Coach Mike Shanahan, was fired by Bowlen in January and after an offensive coordinator he highly respected, Jeremy Bates, left for a similar position at USC when McDaniels chose not to keep him.

The day before free agency began in late February, McDaniels entertained two offers -- thought to be from Tampa Bay and Detroit -- in deals that would have netted the Broncos former McDaniels' pupil Matt Cassell from New England.

When Cutler discovered he had been shopped, he was furious because McDaniels had spoken to him as though he would be the long-term quarterback. Over the last month Cutler has simply been unable to get over it.
