View Full Version : Why does the NBA televise Spurs vs. Suns games?
DrHouse

Same fucking script. Every single time.
Suns come roaring out the gate to an early lead. They look poised to win the game. 4th quarter comes, Spurs decide to play defense. Suns can't get a stop. Suns lose.
I've seen this happen at least 5 times now and really am wondering why the NBA feels we need to keep seeing this same fucking story repeat itself.

Because the uninformed are under the impression that this is a heated rivalry. When in fact, this matchup is more of a slow and violent molestation of the entire Sun's organization.

I second that.
Why does the NBA televise Spurs vs. Suns games?
5. Jeff VanGundy needs the per diem.
4. Ping-pong season doesn't start until May.
3. Mandatory Shaq appearances.
2. Re-using old game footage is cheaper than playing real games.
1. It's March madness, baby!
Or.... maybe they do it just to irritate fucking annoying Laker fans.

Any chance of this being a real rivalry died with the Shaq trade.

NBA likes to televise rivalry games, and it's rational for NBA to do so. the matchups between Spurs&Lakers, Spurs&Suns and Lakers&suns are always preferable because they're totally rivalry matchups, though the results of each matchup are always 80% settled even before the games start.
Spurs always beat Suns while Suns always surprise us by beating Lakers, and Lakers are the nemesis to Spurs. The relationship is just like "stone, scissors and cloth".

Why does the NBA and network execs continously force the Fakers down the throats of a national TV audience? Whether it be a national holiday (Xmas or Thanksgiving) or whether the Fakers are rendered irrelevant (first two seasons after the Shaq departure), the TV watching public is constantly fed a steady diet of Kobe/Shaq or Kobe/Bron or Kobe vs anybody? It's way past old.

Yes..actually you did miss something. The guy cheated on his wife, which a lot of people forget. And adultery is against the law in Colorado.
Colorado 18-6-501 - Adultery. "Any sexual intercourse by a married person other than with that person's spouse is adultery, which is prohibited."
He should have served time..but he didn't..because he's Kobe Freaking Bryant.

The Suns are one of the small number of teams that supposedly can draw good TV ratings.
They have Shaq and have one of the better records the past few seasons. They also play up tempo and have stars Nash and Stoudemire, and an old star Hill.
They make the Spurs look good.

I don't know...adultery wasn't even brought up. That's what I don't understand. Everybody stood beside him "Free Kobe" is all I heard. Even if he didn't rape the young lady..the guy still CHEATED ON HIS WIFE!! Seriously..this guy is a role model? If I had a kid, and he wanted a Kobe jersey, there's no way in hell I'd let him get one, or buy one for him. Kobe is a scum of the earth piece of shit in my opinion. Great player...trash as a person.

2. Lakers games get televised because they are a huge market franchise and also, they are a great entertaining team with the best player in the world

You're a perfect example of a douchebag. Seriously, dude. HE'S FREAKING MARRIED!! HE CHEATED ON HIS WIFE!! He has kids idolizing him. When you get paid like he does, part of that is to not make your organization look bad. And when you're Kobe Fucking Bryant, and kids look up to you, your organization expects you to embrace that, and be a man. What he did was disgraceful and illegal. Yes..adultery is against the law in Colorado. Dude should have been booked in jail..period. And if you think it's ok what he did, I feel sorry for your wife..and if you're not married (which I assume you're a teenager who doesn't care about the authenticity of marriage, or give a crap about vows) I feel sorry for the woman who eventually becomes your wife, if you're lucky to find one who'll put up with this kind of garbage.

LOL..yeah...someone started blasting the Lake Show, and it turned into Kobe, I think. But about the mistake. I mean...accidentally speeding in a school zone is a mistake. When you knowingly cheat on your wife, which is a commandment, and a law in Colorado, it's wrong..very wrong. I still think he should have been locked up. The sad thing is, while he was going to court, and playing at the same time, flying back and forth, when he was playing so well, ESPN went on and on about how it was so inspiring how he could go from court in Colorado in the day and play well at night. How in sam hell can ANYTHING be inspiring about being in court for rape, committing adultery, or anything of that nature? That made me sick.

and if you're not married (which I assume you're a teenager who doesn't care about the authenticity of marriage, or give a crap about vows)
What authenticity or sanctity of vows? Marriage was created to protect bloodlines, make sure that your sons (aka heirs) were in fact yours, and to create alliances between families.
What's so sacred about that?
I'm not defending Kobe by any means, but when I hear people spew the "sanctity of marriage" it annoys me to no end.
Especially in a country where marriage is glamorized in movies and in society as some sort of preferred life, yet half of them end in divorce, and a fair number that don't are probably kept together for all the wrong reasons.

Unbelievable crap spewing out of your pie hole. Just because you don't believe in the sanctity of marriage doesn't mean no one does. I'm married, and will remain. My parents have remained married, as have my grandparents. Where I'm from, the sanctity of marriage and vows mean something. Maybe it doesn't in your house, but it does in mine. It does in the eyes of my God, and the law. Not gonna tell you what or what not to believe, but don't try to pull this "people who talk about the sanctity of marriage annoy me" bullshit. Why are vows so important? Why is marriage so important in this discussion. Marriage is a created institution, not a natural one. In fact, manogamy is against the norm in the animal kingdom, of which humans as a species belong.
Furthermore, as a person who's been with the same girl for 5 years and is raising a 2 year old and 5 month old whom I absolutely adore and love more than live itself, why do I need some man in a robe (be it a priest or judge) telling me that my relationship is somehow more special because a piece of paper says so?
Back to Kobe, you see, people make mistakes. Even you, who chastize Kobe have made mistakes. No man is within sin (if you want to talk religiously namely christianity for a bit).
Not even Jesus himself was without sin (the "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" bit) and he was the supposed son of God.
Plus, the true christian thing to do is to not judge your fellow man (that's God's job) and to love your fellow man and embrace his differences.

No douchebag...let me reiterate what I put on here earlier...This is in the State Laws of Colorado...I'll copy and paste so you can read.
Colorado Law 18-6-501 - Adultery. "Any sexual intercourse by a married person other than with that person's spouse is adultery, which is prohibited."
Now..in case your mind doesn't comprehend this, it means that adultery (cheating on your wife, which Kobe did..he admits it) is against the law in the state of Colorado. How is it unbelievable? Marriage isn't some sacred right, but rather, some created alliance. Key word CREATED. Men created marriage not God. That's a simple fact supported by thousands of years of recorded history.
Besides, if you want to hit on the "God" aspect, what do you say to the people who were married by a judge instead of a priest? Is there marriage somehow less sacred because of it.
Fact is, in Texas at least, you can get an informal marriage license that gives you all the legal protections marriage, costs half as much as a marriage license and is less stressful if you fuck up in picking a mate because humans tend to make mistakes.
Kobe is a human being, and humans aren't infallible no matter what the Catholic church or the Pope think about himself. Humans make mistakes. Humans make errors in judgement. Kobe made an error in judgement. Get over it and yourself.
Now, let's get back to talking ball and if you want to criticize Kobe, criticize the player.

Sodomy was illegal in Texas up until a few years ago. How many people here have fucked a person in the ass? Should they all have been arrested?

neither was OJ
And as much as everyone hates OJ, you can't call him a murderer. There's this constitutional right called "innocent until proven guilty". Like man, it has it's flaws because it was created by man.
But overall, it's generally a good protection to have.

I don't have a problem with getting back to ball, but you continue to duck the fact that adultery is against the law in Colorado. He took the oath..whether or not you think marriage is better or worse than not being married, Kobe did get married. And he broke the state law. So..if someone breaks a law, we can just say "they're a human being, they make mistakes" and that's ok? Bullshit. And don't tell me to get over myself...I'm just stating a fact. He broke a state law..period. And you're saying that's ok, because he's a human being.

The key word here is WAS. It still IS illegal to commit adultery in Colorado. If you break a law...you break a law...I don't get it...if I go punch someone in the face, and get sued for assault, it's a fact...I assaulted the dude..I'm not going to go in front of court and say "I'm a human..I make mistakes..this is a bad law." I'm going to man up and say "I did it..it was wrong..I broke a law.." All you're doing is saying it's ok for him to duck a law.

You don't need a man in a robe to say your relationship is more special...but he chose to. Yes..people make mistakes..but it's a LAW in the state of Colorado..how many times am I going to have to say this. It's not about spirituality..it's about breaking the law. Kobe broke the law in Colorado when he cheated on his wife. Breaking the law = punishment...otherwise we have chaos..
Here are some laws out there that I'm sure have been broken at one time or another.
During the 6th Century, it was customary to congratulate people who sneezed because it was thought that they were expelling evil from their bodies. During the great plague of Europe, the Pope passed a law to say "God bless you" to one who sneezed.
There still are some weird laws on the books. In Washington state, it is against the law to boast that one's parents are rich. In Maryland, it's illegal to play Randy Newman's "Short People" on the radio. In Alabama it is illegal to play Dominoes on Sunday. And in Minneapolis, double-parkers can be put on a chain gang.
In 1313, King Edward II enacted that "You are forbidden from dying in parliament."
An old statute in Kentucky states that men who push their wives out of bed for inflicting their cold toes on them can be fined or jailed for a week. A 100-year-old law in Willowdale, Oregon makes it illegal to swear during sex. An odd law in Minnesota makes it illegal to hang male and female underwear on the same washing line. In Melbourne, Australia it is illegal for men to parade in strapless dresses - but they are allowed to cross-dress in anything with sleeves.
An old law in Russia allows a police officer to "beat a peeping tom soundly." In Texas, two categories of men are exempt from peeping tom charges: men over 50 and men with only one eye.
A pregnant woman can urinate anywhere she wishes, including a policeman's helmet, according to a London local by-law. But in Vermont, women require their husbands permission to wear false teeth.
In Virginia, horses of more than one year old are prohibited in a place of worship. In Tennessee, shooting any game other than whales from a moving automobile is against the law. In Normal, Oklahoma you could be sent to prison for "making an ugly face at a dog."

Good god..and you're comparing these to marriage. Come on man..once again..just because you don't believe in the sanctity of marriage, or the laws of marriage in Colorado, doesn't mean nobody does. Let's get back to ball..this is going nowhere...we just need to agree to disagree...deal?

Well man..you just gotta make sure she's the right one. I know it's hard..but the reason that marriage worked back then and doesn't now it's because it's work. People have problems, they argue, and they take the easy way out. It's one word..W. O. R. K. If you're not willing to work, don't try. If you are, and you love her..go for it...now that Dr. Phil is out of the building..let's talk about basketball, shall we?

spursfan092120 YOU ARE RIGHT ON!! 100% correct. Let these other idiots tear apart marriage -good luck with their crappy relationships. I am happily married have been for years and so have my parents and my spouses parents. Marriage rocks when you're with the right person and treat it with respect. Good luck to the lost souls who spew venom on the sanctity of marriage. I'm not saying anything else, I'm going back to Basketball. :toast

and if you're not married (which I assume you're a teenager who doesn't care about the authenticity of marriage, or give a crap about vows)
Marriage today is no more than a state sanctioned union between two people. Without that piece of paper that says "Marriage License", it ain't valid.
What, exactly, is authentic about that?
The original ideals behind the practice of marriage are long, long gone.
With that being said, Kobe Bryant made vows to love, honor and cherish, forsake all others, etc. I don't believe Bryant raped the young woman. But he did trash his commitment to his wife. That is the reason why he shouldn't be held up as a role model. Yes I understand that he is only human and people make mistakes. I get that. But when you're in the public eye you better understand that any questionable thing you do could get out and give you a black eye. With that knowledge on the brain, it's up to those in the public eye to be more careful.

your last paragraph was right on, IMO. But also IMO marriage is real..and very authentic..it's just if you have what it takes to work at it.

Can we get off the marriage debate and back to the actual thread topic?
Hijackers -- BEGONE!!!!
Now back to the topic:
They show Suns/Spurs because it gives them a chance to hype the game and improve ratings therefore make more money. The hyped storyline? Poor little Stevie Nash. Won two MVPs and never got to the Finals. Poor unlucky Suns. Every time they lose to the Spurs, and every time it's because someone's injured, or that "controversial" suspension happened.
Remember, fat beer-swilling dumbass guy who flips on the TV to watch sports? Remember those exciting, compelling storylines? You have to tune in to watch Chapter 27 of this saga! It's almost as compelling as "Do Kobe and Shaq still hate each other or have they made up now?" But not quite as compelling as that.

As far as marriage is concerned, I've never been so I'm not an authority on the subject, but 5 of my friends have gotten married and 4 are already divorced. Marriage is fine, but I think marrying young is a BIG mistake. Sure, there are a few exceptions but as a whole I think it should wait. I always said I'm gonna wait till 30 before marriage or kids. The 20's are mine and the only chance I'll ever be this young--no need to be on lockdown

Also, while many have expressed believing in marriage, not a single one has took my challenged and actually explained WHY it's sacred.
I guess after having shown how marriage came about, and proven that throughout history it was nothing more than a means of control, control of women, assests and family, it's not really defensible in that manner.
That's really my only point, that the idea of the so called "sanctity of marriage" never existed in the first place.
Good god..and you're comparing these to marriage. Come on man..once again..just because you don't believe in the sanctity of marriage, or the laws of marriage in Colorado, doesn't mean nobody does. Let's get back to ball..this is going nowhere...we just need to agree to disagree...deal?

Same fucking script. Every single time.
Suns come roaring out the gate to an early lead. They look poised to win the game. 4th quarter comes, Spurs decide to play defense. Suns can't get a stop. Suns lose.
I've seen this happen at least 5 times now and really am wondering why the NBA feels we need to keep seeing this same fucking story repeat itself.
Well it beats the hell out of watching the Suns whip the crap out of the Lakers on a Sunday afternoon.
