was this posted? sorry if it was.

Update:
Gooden (groin) stayed late after practice Saturday to walk through the Spurs' offensive sets, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

Recommendation:
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich plans to give Gooden some time to adapt before putting him on the floor. "We've got a lot of stuff and run a lot of different things, so it's going to take a lot of time for him to kind of catch up," forward Tim Duncan said. "We'll put in a smaller package for him, some basic stuff, just so he knows what's going on."

He needs to learn 300 offensive playbooks, then 550 defensive zones, and practice 1,000 defensive rotations drills.

Seriously, if he learns the 4-down play for Timmy, he is ready to go...............

Does this have to do with his groin or is this completely unrelated?

Exactly. There is no way he's gonna learn all the plays on offense or defense before season's end or next season's end. He needs to just get in there and play.

err, Gooden is a 7-year veteran! Can't Duncan just teach him how to rotate on defense? He should already know how to do this by now anyway.

All he needs to do is get offensive rebounds / catch the ball and dunk.

The Spurs defensive rotations are a bit different than other teams' though. From what I've heard, the rotations come from different spots which tends to fool incoming players for a bit.

CIA Pop is going to wait until after LA in my opinion..he doesn't want the Lakers to be able to adjust to him before the playoffs.

You can tell people want to rush him into the rotation before the lakers
are in town.. Should rush this.

Despite the fact that I can't wait to see how Pops will utilize Gooden and to see how Gooden will fit with our team, I don't think Pop will play him until after the Lakers.

Like to see him against LA but he needs to be healthy first. Man if hes good to go for the playoffs and Ian gets back this month our front court looks very good and for sure better than LAs.

I didn't think Ian was going to come back this year? Plus I doubt Pop would even put him into the playoff rotation...

Gooden is going to be a match-up guy--playing when he's the better choice against the opposition.
He'll also be useful playing a few minutes to help keep Kurt and Matt out of foul trouble.
It's great that they are all decent shooters.

I don't see Gooden getting a lot of minutes this year, but if the coaching staff can slowly and carefully explain the importance of solid defense to him, next year looks pretty good.

Oberto will see his playing time increased when Manu comes back.
Their mental telepathy is a beautiful thing to watch.
Ridiculous no-look passes, etc.

I have a serious fucking problem with Pop if he pulls this Manu BS coming off the bench with Gooden after he's played for a couple weeks.

Yeah, cuz Goodens proven so much as a Spur.:lol

Slow your role, he probably won't start unless he averages his career numbers. If he somehow does that, why would you put him on the first team, where he'll have to battle with Timmy for boards and posting up on O. I like the idea of him taking heat of Tim as the starting C, but I like the idea of him tearing up backup bigs in the 2nd unit more, since he's faced off against the top 2 bigs of teams pretty much his whole time in the NBA.

Bonner is only as useful as he is because Tim gets him those shots, and somewhat hides Bonners weakness on the boards, and D.

God I hope Bonner starts in the Finals and the Spurs win it all, so all the doubters can STFU about Bonner as a starter=no :lobt2:

Yeah, because it didn't work at all with Manu, right? We need some big man post scoring off the bench. Get ready to have a serious fucking problem.

As much as I want him to play on my birthday (today) I'd rather the Spurs keep him out for 2 reasons.

1. Rest. Make sure he is ready to go for the playoffs. He can learn the plays in practice.

2. Dont give Lakers a look at what he is going to help us do.

If they decide to play him tomorrow, cool, I love TITS :toast. If they hold him out, even better IMHO.

This is a good point. With Gooden spending his career in the east the Lakers don't know him very well, and with him needing to get back into the swing of things and a new system, a player's tendency is to stick with what they are good at. Pop is a smart guy and doesn't want to rush him into things. The Lakers are our biggest concern in the playoffs and there is no need to let them get a sneek preview of what what Gooden will do with the Spurs system, and how they plan on playing him into it.
