Houston beating Portland isn't an upset.
Denver beating San Antonio would be a possible upset...Denver could drop to 6/7. Anybody beating the Lakers in the first round would be a huge upset but I don't see a team in the bottom 4 to do it.

Giving Dallas a little too much credit.

The Mavs DO have talent, they could give the Lakers a scary time if they show some heart.

We could take Denver too.

We could take Denver too.
We "could" potentially take any team not named the Lakers or Hornets. I don't like the matchup problems the Hornets give us, but other than that anyone is fair game.

Utah would fuck us over on the road.

I will cry if blazers end up against the mavs lol.

The Mavs don't have talent, their issues have nothing to do with heart.
Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol aren't known for great heart, but the Lakers may win it all because of their talent.

Portland would be an ideal matchup for the Mavs.
But the regular season doesn't carry much weight as far as how we matchp, I dont believe.
We did outplay them in every single 4th quarter getting big shots and stops down the stretch. And they're not very good defensively, almost as bad as Phoenix in fact.
But it's not as if we thoroughly dominated them in any of the games. JET/Dirk/Kidd were big in all 3 games though, so yes it would be a preferred matchup, but not an autowin by any stretch.
But if they get home court, jump out a 2-0 lead... all of that from the regular season goes out the window.
This would require the Blazers to get 4th and Mavs to get 5th though... a scenario I doubt playing out.

I'd pay good money to watch Mavs vs Spurs in the Playoffs, that series would be epic.

The Spurs would win this time around, and I don't want them or their fans to have the psychic satisfaction of avenging 06. I'll take a beatdown from the LakeShow over that.

Best case scenario for the Mavs is getting the 6 seed. Which means they avoid Spurs & Lakers both in the 1st round, then if by some miracle they win their first round matchup, they avoid the Lakers in the 2nd round and probably play the Spurs. And say what you will, but the Mavs will definitely be amped up to play the Spurs in the playoffs. They could win that series.
The only chance for anybody in the West is for the Blazers to pull of the upset against LA. I'm convinced they're the only WC team with any hope whatsoever in a 7 game series with the Lakers. And if they pull off that upset, it's anybody's game. Even the Mavs.

Well said, although I also don't like the way we matchup with NO.

If somehow the Lakers are knocked out early, it's anybody's trip to the Finals. With the right mismatch, a team can proceed to the next round.
Mavs can take out the Spurs or vice versa
Jazz can take out the Hornets
Hornets can take out the Mavs
Blazers can take out anybody or get swept due to their youth
Nuggets can take out the Blazers

Kobe would never let a bunch of soft 23-24 YO's beat the Lakers.
Blazers only "match up" well against the Lakers in the Rose... too bad the first 2 games are at Staples.

Mavs would need to play out of their minds to win a playoff series.
First off, it would probably require home court. Every team in the West except for Spurs/Lakers has a theme of being really good at home, and really mediocre or bad on the road. The first 2 games at home, especially given the parity amongst 3-8, is crucial.
In order to get home court the Mavs have to play great consistent basketball from here on out, something they haven't shown all year.
Second off, even then we're probably up against a team with more talent than us. However we have a chance v teams like the Blazers, Rockets, or Nuggets because we would have the best player in the series. Jazz too because they incessantly foul and are bad on the road (if we had home court).
I'm not getting my hopes up.

I think the Jazz can take out the Spurs and vice versa. I'm starting to believe in the Jazzholes.
