Manu, Mahinmi stay after class (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/)
By Jeff McDonald

HOUSTON -- When the bus carrying the Spurs to and from their morning shootaround left the Toyota Center, two players were not on it.

Manu Ginobili and Ian Mahinmi stayed behind with the team's medical staff, testing their respective injured ankles. Ginobili has missed 13 games with a stress reaction in his right ankle. Mahinmi has been out with one ankle injury or another more or less for the entire season, and underwent surgery to remove a bone spur in January.

This morning, long after the rest of the Spurs had returned to the team hotel, both players underwent a regimen of footwork exercises meant to evaluate their recovery. Ginobili finished his workout with some light shooting, including drills involving movement.

Mahinmi is not expected to contribute at the NBA level this season. The timetable for Ginobili's return remains what it was earlier this week, when Gregg Popovich said, "When he's ready, he'll play."

I think Manu will suit up tonight, but probably won't play. If he does, does someone have to move to the inactive list? Will that be Jacque Vaughn?

Figured that Ian wouldn't be with us this year and Manu seems to progressing though at a slower pace than expected. So long as Manu returns with enough time to get into game shape then everything will be fine. How many games he will need I don't know. Maybe some of you could speculate on this. All I want is for Manu to come back healthy since without him we have little if any chance of getting to the WCF much less taking out the Lakers.

He is the X factor.

Pop wont make a player travel to Houston and them Oklahoma with the team if the player is still injured.
We'll see...

if that's the case...

Manu is supposed to go from light shooting drills and movement exercises to being guarded by Ron Ron?

haha good point.

maybe they haven't seen nasa yet? or oklahoma's....awesome.....panhandle? :p:

but next week sounds like a good estimate for manu's return. hell, i just want him to play at least the last 6 or 7 games of the season just to shake off the rust. but the more games, the merrier.

Well, he was doing shooting drills last report we got from spursdotcom. He traveled and did some more workouts and shooting. He either suits up tonight or against the Thunder.

Yeah but Mahinmi was there? I don't think Manu is suiting up. Maybe for Oklahoma.

I'll tell you when Manu will play: one game after the Spurs medical staff clears him for action. Pop is an old lady when it comes to that.

I don't see him playing for another week, to be honest.

Never understood this part of the NBA if anyone can help me out. Why do teams have to make a player inactive just so another one can play?

Because teams have 15 guys on their roster, but only 12 can suit up at any one time. It's just like the NFL. The rosters are 53, but only 45 dress. A player being "inactive" doesn't necessarily mean he's injured. A lot of times, if a team has a full healthy team, their inactives are literally just their three worst players.

The Spurs have 13 healthy guys right now, so Malik Hairston is the inactive. When Manu returns, Jacque Vaughn in all likelihood will be wearing a suit as well.

Im not buying the Ian wont play this season, the spurs were counting on him at the start of the year and now they are gonna hang it up? With Duncan hurting a bit, Bonner being worthless, Oberto who is a scrub Kt who was born the day after jesus and Gooden who will need surgery after the season why would the spurs not try to play this guy in the playoffs even for just spuirts at a time to get him some playoff experiance for next year when he will be a starter.

If healthy he will play, I cant beleive pops thinks he couldnt help against LA on the boards and running with Gasol.

You must be new...

It sounds like both Ian and Manu are very close to come back. :tu

There is a risk of a re-injury with Manu and we are close to the playoffs so I guess Pop will be more cautious then ever. Manu will need to do some serious lobby to be back on the court.

For Ian, Toros next game is on Wednesday.

We'll see...Do you realize how short those flights are? Driving home after a Spurs game probably takes Manu longer than flying to Houston . . .

Does it take 35-40 minutes for you to get home after a Spurs game?

Always has for me. And I haven't been since they were at the Alamodome, which is significantly closer to me.

well, I'm curious if Pop will place Ian on the playoff roster just for size because he keeps giving Mason time at the pg spot. Which may indicate that IF Ian is able to play he will be on the playoff roster and either Hill or Vaghn will not or possibly Oberto (due to his heart and limited pt) Pop could be using Mason as the backup PG to give the Spurs size in the back court and also allow them to have more BIgs in their rotation regardless of pt. I'm curious to see how this plays out plus Hairston won't likely be on the playoff roster either.

I guess it depends on where everyone is and how well they are playing but I'm a bit concern about Oberto for health reason and lack of pt reasons. How many guys are on the playoff roster and didn't they change the rules to where you can change from game to game or series to series or something like that a few year ago, or was it the number of players allowed on the PO roster???

Sean said hopefully he'll come back the last 10-12 games of the season so that would put him back around the 25th against the Hawks.
