View Full Version : What kind of a basketball player are you?

In mentality, playstyle, size, etc.

I am 6 feet and 2 inches tall and weigh 200 lbs. Being one of the stronger and slower ones I usually play center/PF when playing 3 on 3 but I usually help out with ballhandling when we play 5 vs 5.

My speciality and best move is a hook shot that irritates the shit out of everyone because they can't block or defend it very well so i get double teamed and fouled a lot. I also like to play some pick and rolles if thee PG is a good shooter/passer.

I am a below average rebounder (for my size). Average player where i play is around my size too. We have some 6-6 players too though...

I am a very good defender against big and strong players as i know how to position myself good... I usually have roblems against faster guys.

I am a win junkie... I get crazy if we play bad and loose in the end. (I cuss a lot while playing :rolleyes A really bad habit... ) But if we loose and all 3 players played by their best ability I dont get mad... Sometimes you simply cant do much.

Also worth mentioning is that I am a very physical player that fouls hard... but basically where I play basically everyone is with some exceptions. Most of the plays end with a foul. However noone really plays dirty as we are all older than 20 and we tend to get hurt and banged up more than when we were 17 :P

Love this game :toast

I'm around 6 feet tall (183 cm), and I weight 180 lbs (82 kg)...I think I'm petty fast, but just when I really want to be...sometimes I just don't feel I want to run a lot...When we play 3:3 I almost always play the PG, only if there's someone smaller than me, then I'm a shooter on the wing. When we play 5:5 then I'm a SG/PG...I prefer the SG position more, but our team really's got no real playmaker, so I must play it.

My best moves...hm, I don't know...I like the bank shot. I pretty much've copied it from Tim, even through I'm not that big. I also like to knoch down the 3 pointer, specialy when the game is close, and we need a 3 for the win...So I would say that I'm pretty clutch. I also like to go to the basket, like Manu... The last year I made a improvement on my long range/middle range shooting, cause I was really bad at it...

I think I'm a pretty good rebounder for my size...I really get a lot of offensive rebound...

I'm a solid defender...I'm used to guard all kind of players...I like guardin big guys in the paint, and I like to block some shots...I've got problems with the small/fast players.

I'm also pretty mad all the time when we lose.

So that would be it.

I am working on that right now. :toast

I usually catch people off guard with it because they expect me to power my way inside like on 80% of my plays. Still I need to practice it a lot in game situations to be better at it. When I am alone I can hit more than 70% from the field.

I usually can get it off against smaller players as they back away a little when I face the basket.

I'm 5'10" and 180 lbs. I usually play PG in any game. I will take the open jumper if needed. When I used to play all the time (before the 2 yr old and 5 month old) my best move was probably a turn around jumper from midrange going left or right. I worked on that quite a bit.

But in actuality, I love playing D, especially on the perimeter. I love getting after it and basically blanketing someone to the point where the either take a contested jumper or just give up the ball. I can defend with both hands and block quite a lot of shots for someone my size because of timing, a quick second jump and the ability to block with either hand, thereby being my best safeguard against falling for a pump fake.

They can get me off the ground, go opposite direction from where I'm going, but if the shot doesn't go off quick enough, I'm usually contesting with the other hand off the second jump.

a quick second jump and the ability to block with either hand.

I was practically useless with my left hand. But I had a bone in my right hand broken this winter so i developed much more dexterity/agility in my left one.

Now i actually feel like i came to the same level of play with my right hand as before and my left is a bit improved.. even made a left layup on friday :downspin:

6'1, 185 pounds, I guess you can call me a mini-rodman because i will be in your face all game long. Offense is overrated, everyone can score, not a lot of people can defend. Love going up against 6'3/6'4 guys and showing them what's up.

Hey guys how about a Spurstalk tournament?

We used to do basketball nights at Blossom occasionally back when Manny had the hookup for the gym late at nights. Haven't seen that mentioned in a while tho.

Otherwise, it seems hard to a) find a court that everyone can agree on and b) afford.

TDfan2007
03-15-2009, 01:30 PM
I'm 6'1'' 177 lbs. I can play PG-PF, but out of all those positions PG is definitely my weakest. I'm fast, especially laterally, where I can keep even guys who are more athletic than myself in front of me.

Vertical-wise, I'm not sure how high I can jump, all I know is that I've dunked it 3 times and can easily grab rim even though my arms aren't that long.

Defensively, I have quick feet and good timing on shot blocks, but I'm TERRIBLE at playing the passing lanes and stripping guys of the ball. I'm only an average post defender.

Offensively, I'd say I'm really versatile. I can work the pick and roll/pick and pop as either the screener or the dribbler. I also love to go left even though I'm a righty. After driving left I can finish with either hand, it all depends on how tall the guy guarding me is. My accuracy from 3 point range is about 40% wide open, but mid range is where I'm the best, especially from the elbows and Tim's bank shot area. That bank shot is probably my most accurate and effective shot and on good days I even have 3 point range from that angle off the glass.

I'm also really effective down low. I find cutters well and have copied a lot of Tim's moves like his lefty hook and fallaway one handed shot with the right hand (I do these on the opposite side of the court from where I shoot my bankers). That one handed fallaway is definitely my most accurate shot down low and for whatever reason I rarely miss it and get ridiculous bounces. Watching Tim I noticed that he often got blocked trying that shot, so I modified mine to create more separation and it worked.

My biggest weaknesses include a not-so effective pullup J off my left hand dribble, average ball handling, and a tendency to let misses easily affect my confidence. I also tend to shank layups sometimes and am not as effective as I should be when driving to my right.

Wow...that was a mouthful.

I'm 5'11'', 190, but I love to extend my size. I can play the post against anyone 6'3'' or less, and I have a pretty consistent outside shot should I ever need to take that role. I can rebound, shoot distance, and I'm a decent passer. I'm an awful one on one player, but 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 5 on 5, I like doing things the San Antonio way. Unselfish, methodical, working for the best shot. I'm the vocal motivator for my team, and they usually enjoy it even in a pickup game.

I am 5'11, 170 and I am the best defender you will ever meet on the court. The most I have given up to a person in the past 5-6 months is 4 points in a 13 point end game.

Yeah, Bowen-type on Defense. I play PG/SG.

On Offense I am like Rip Hamilton. Mid range all day.

I'm 6-4, about 235. I have good dribbles, decent outside shot. I rely on my first step for most of my offense, as I don't meet many people who can stop it. I pretty much like to run point, unless I am playing with someone who is a better point than I am. I really like to drive and kick out, I'm a pass first player. I'm a decent defender, and I am very strong, so I have never had problems guarding guys bigger than me. I've guarded post players up to 6-10 without them being able to back me down, although smaller, faster players are a tough guard for me as my quickness and speed is better north to south, not laterally. My weaknesses are my jumping ability, which I've just never seemed to have much of, even in my youth. I am not the best finisher around the rim either, which is why I have always had a point guard mentality when driving. My post game consists of a shitty jump hook, and a shittier up and under move. It's definitely one area of my game I would love to improve, as I am usually stronger than anyone I meet on the court. And I would really like to improve my cardio, as i seem to get winded quickly after the first couple of games, but I can usually catch my breath after that. If anyone in Austin ever wants to get a game going, I'm down. Shit, I would even be down to drive to SA if someone got something set up down there.

i'm 5'9, 160 pounds. i usually play PG/SG though i'm not a terrific ball handler/slasher. so i usually just pass it to the guy that's best at slashing and try to get open for a jump shot. if there's a good center on my team, i just play pick and roll all day. if the defense sucks and doesn't pressure me, i have excellent court vision. i'm also great at catching and shooting. one thing i pride myself in is defense. i can guard any position except for a very large center or when the person is just ridiculously taller than me like 6'2+. if i'm not needed much on the offensive end, i've successfully guarded someone who was 6'0", 235 lbs at center. i can even guard the quickest slashers i play against.

I am 182 cm tall and 83 kg. My position is playmaker. However i really like driving the lane. It is my basket. The big guys just can't get me. I often get the backet and the foul. On the other hand i rarely shoot 3s or mid range baskets. I really have a problem there. I only try stepback jumpers like Manu. You just can't block them. And i am also a great passer. I really enjoy giving assists:). Finally i play nice D.

I'm 6'7", 220lbs and a born centre - I don't really want to leave the low post unless I have to. I've played ball for 18 years, although I've never been better than right now after spending 2 years in Japan running with midgets, and then the last 18 months in the gym developing strength. I started playing regularly again a few months ago after years of bad ankles, and I'm totally loving it! :)

I have a highly developed low post game modeled on Hakeem and Tim: a killer drop step both ways, baby hooks to both hands (I'm a righty, but my left hook is actually better which confuses the hell out of defenders), baseline spins, up-and-unders, a fadeaway which I rarely use. I also have a money 15fter from pretty much anywhere in the court if I'm open, and I can drive both ways. I also know how to attack guys - post smaller or quicker guys, take bigger/slower guys outside and shoot/drive on them. I pretty much demand a double team in most scrimmages I play these days.

On D I like to stay around the rim, but most of the time end up chasing smaller guys around which is a major pain. I'm a good rebounder without being exceptional, although I can be very good when concentrating on blocking out and playing with others who do likewise. I used to block a lot of shots, but these days I try to protect my body and don't tear-arse around the court trying to block shit. Instead I just play fundamental D, stay on the ground, and use my length (6'10" wingspan) to bother or block shots.

Never made it to elite competition, although I always played a high standard of men's amateur 'ball and won two titles along the way. I often wonder what could have been if I had bulked up when I was younger, and understood basketball then as well as I do now.

PS Kurt - you are NOT the biggest Spurs fan in Australia.

Formerly 6'0, now 5'11 shooting guard/point guard (knee and back :lol). Played on a state championship basketball team not too long ago, but our depth and total sacrificing for them team made it hard for anyone to stand out, so I didn't pursue college ball without a scholarship, although I regret it. I'm quick like Wade the only way to stop me is to foul. Mostly a midrange shooter, but extremely streaky and will hit 3's at will if I'm on, or won't even shoot one at all if I'm feeling "off." Used to be a good dunker and long arms, so I can guard anyone under 6'5ish if they're not really bulky. Not really a superstar type player, I'm more comfortable as the number 2 option. more of an all around guy. I love to play defense. My high school coach called me "the best perimeter defender" on our team.

I'm 6'4" and about 200 lbs. I played on the high school team when I was in 5th and 6th grade, but not because I was good; I was tall and they didn't have enough players otherwise. I used to be a good shooter, but haven't played more than one or two games per year for many years (if that). My ballhandling skills were never good, but I am very good at losing my defender without the ball or guarding other players, especially ball denial. For some reason even when I wasn't in the best shape, I could summon extra energy when everyone else was worn out and play like I'd only started.

I'm basically just a spectator now though (wish I'd been a Spurs fan when I was a kid, I might have put a little more time into developing my game). Go Spurs and Gig 'em Aggies!

5'9" and 150 lbs. I'm pretty lean and muscular. Usually play PG/SG, with average handles. I play play kinda like Rip Hamilton with a crappier midrange :lol. I run my defender ragged, which is funny because I had the worst stamina in the world for the longest time.

Best move has to be the Tony Parker teardrop in the lane, it's damn near unblockable. I got a pretty good post game against players my size (5'7" - 6'0"), mostly with up and unders and fade aways.

I'm a far better defender than I am on offense though. Lockdown perimeter defender a la Bruce Bowen, using my quick to my advantage. I'm a pretty good rebounder for my size mainly due to my hops (I can barely dunk).

I'm a 2 in a 1's body. Pretty good jumper, but I need screens. Can't shoot over anyone -- I'm only 5'6". I look for the pass and don't like to take dumb shots. But don't leave me open because if I have my legs, I can make just about any J from 25’ and in.

What generally happens, however, is that I don't ever get any touches. This is not unexpected when playing with guys who are way bigger, and better, than you are. So I will revert from my preferred shooter's role to more of a hustler -- setting picks, doubling on D, and chasing after loose balls. This is tiring and messes up my shooting, but it's the only way to stay on the floor.

I'm about 5'11 almost 6'0 , 180 lbs...so usually when I play anywhere, whether it be 3 on 3, 4 on 4, or 5 on 5 I am usually the PG, once in awhile some 2-guard. I consider myself to be pretty quick, and I like to lull people to sleep when they are guarding me and then I kick up the speed really quick and blow past the defender. I am good at finishing around the rim, and I like to think I have some pretty good court vision as well. I usually look to get my teamates involved 1st before I try and take over anything. Even though I am undersized when I play against 6'4 and 6'5 guys I still go after the ball and crash the boards pretty good for my size. I've had a pretty good amount of cool "put-backs," of course for layups not dunks, but still pretty good considering I go in and climb amongst the trees.

Reliable to 20' - and with a nice pull up. I was a triple threat on offense, if somewhat lackadaisical on defense and rebounding.

I'm the Kurt Rambis of my rec. league, I can hit the open jumper and play D, but I'm mostly used to foul the shit out of opposing players.

please tell me you don't have the hair or the goggle glasses! :lol

I'm a mixture of Parker, Shaq and Duncan which means I'm short, overweight and can't jump. But I do have good court vision, passing skills and defend well. And since most of my friends are short too, I usually play as a power forward.

Haha that would make me a cross between Parker and Manu (short and always banged up)...
But, like you, I play with a lot of smaller guys so I pretty much play like Kobe (iso at the wing, back to the basket with a turn around + step-back or a skip-to-my-lou reverse Britney Spears layup (looks good in the beginning but is the epitome of fail at the end). :lobt2:

I'm 6'1", and overweight now. I sprained my ankle really badly dunking in high school, and haven't lived above the rim or played organized ball since. I've developed some great post moves over the years, the Dream shake, the sky hook, a drop step, a turnaround jumper and can get off a shot over or around just about anyone. I can shoot almost every shot as well with my left as I can with my right but I can't handle the ball worth crap because I can't dribble with my left. I'm an incredibly streaky shooter, and when I'm hot I can hit anywhere out to about 21 feet. I'm a tenacious defender who bites on pump fakes going for a big block and will put an elbow into you any time I can get away with it.

alright timvp, time to come out of retirement and face the challenge set forth
Let's get some tournament action. I could use the extra cash when I win.

I'm 1,75 mts (5'9?) and 75 kgs (160 pounds?) I've played football (soccer for some of you) all my life and I even got to play in a semi-profesional league (you get paid but you still need to do something else to survive) but I retire about a year and half ago at the age of 19 and now I play Paddle and Basketball in an amateur league that has 8 teams.
Even though I never played organized BB in my life before, I always liked the sport and I have a hoop in the garden of my house since I was 5 years old, that's why I don't suck so bad. And because all my team-mates are friends of mine that never played a sport in their lives I'm the best player of the team. We went 1 and 13 in our first season last year (we won the last one) but I had a great time taking pretty much all the shots of our team, I'm not a good three point shooter (but I take them anyways :p: I think I went 5 for a thousand) actually I'm not a pretty good shooter at all (except for the free throws, 'cause that's all I can practice with the space I have in my garden) but I'm very fast and I have a good conditioning (because of the soccer preparation) so I try to attack the basket 99% of the times. We don't have stats in our league but I'm pretty sure I'm the leading scorer of the league.
As you can see I'm the anti-spur: a ball-hog that cares more about getting his than winning :lol but I'm happy that way.

LJ, sharpen up your outside shooting, get your post-passing ready, and next time I'm in SA (aiming for this time next year) let's take these chumps down a notch. I'm in the best shape of my life and more than ready to stomp all over pego. :ihit

whottt told me that all mookie does is camp in the lane and that pego's game is trash if you force him off his jumper. Seeing how whottt has first hand experience, I'll trust that scouting report :tu

If I did come out of retirement, timvp, Ruff and our third would beat the whole city of Victoria . . .

If Mookie reckons I'm gonna give him any kind of position he's kidding himself, and on offense I'll back myself against anyone in this thread short of the 6'7" 260lb gorilla who is going to play College ball! :lol

Oh, and there's our 3rd, timvp, as long as he has any knees left. ;)

I am almost 5’ 4” & 126 lbs…I have a devastating 2 hand set shot from the free throw line…I can also do that 50’s style two hand outside bank shot as I run past baseline…My defense needs some work…

I'm about 5'10 and too out of shape to really compete anymore....Back in my teens and early 20's, I was pretty athletic and could dunk a 9ft goal pretty easily. I have pretty good handles, good post moves (loved Hakeem's up and under), great FT shooter (won my company competition last year sinking 19 of 20) and good college line 3pt shooter.

When I was younger, I played very good on the ball defense and took alot of pride in staying in front of my man and rarely going for pump fakes. These days, I just try to force people to their weak hand and take outside shots since I don't have the foot speed to stay in front of people anymore. I miss my youth...

Here is me winning the company free throw shooting contest, look at those adverse conditions... :lol

I'm 6'1" and love playing. It's absolutely my favorite thing in the world.

I play intramurals at my school. This past week we lost the championship by one point, and I hit the game winner in two of the four rounds... Missed it in the championship game lol. I guess I'm not clutch.

I've played all my life and consider myself a student of the game... Naturally, I tend to be a physical player and love taking the ball to the hole. However, my favorite move is the Ginobiliesque step back jumper. I take pride in my defense and usually work harder than anyone else on the court... I'm also unselfish and love being a playmaker.

Too bad I'm in Cali, otherwise I'd be down to partake in a Spurstalk tourney. I'll take RenaldoBalkman on my team. Defense wins championships baby.

5'8. i play pretty physical. i like to crash the boards and play defense but i do gamble a lot.

for offense i love to drive. i drive whenever i can. my post game is decent so if my drive is cut off i would just post. my jumper is erratic and i have no 3 point shot so theoretically its pretty easy to shut me down. but i usually play pretty relentless and i crash the offensive boards a lot so that helps.

I'm 5'11 and I WAS pretty much a defensive specialist who can shoot the three. Unfortunately I blew out my knee so I've been on the injured reserve for a while. :-( I'm hoping I'll get back to kicking my brothers but this summer. :-) I'm still waiting to see his post in here, I think he's just chicken......

I am 5'6" 160 (Since my wife taught me that ramen isn't the only edible food source, i have gained weight).

I would have to say my overall style is not to try to do more than I know I can. I am more of a mental player than a physical specimen designed by doctors to play basketball. An example: Most big guys would love to block my shot, therefore a pump fake will give me a wide open lane or a 1 dribble and shoot.

I am not a very strong rebounder due to my size. But I think my wieght gain has hurt it more than my height. (I used to be able to touch the rim, now I am lucky if I graze the net).

My defense is streaky. I am either locking down my assignment, or getting torched. I have quick hands so I get alot of steals, and am pretty good at sneaking around and getting into the passing lanes.

My passing I would say ranges from good to "I can't believe I just made that pass".

My ballhandling has a little to be desired, but my quick first step more than makes up for it. I usually only need 1 dribble to get by my defender. Either that, or my craftiness will overcome. (Sometimes I tempt defenders to go for the steal and spin off of them.)

Shooting-wise, I am a mid range shooter preferrably. I do have NBA 3pt range, and am no stranger to the half court HORSE shots. If I am wide open, I will generally bury a good number of opportunities.

I do not know why, but my free throws are terrible.

My inside game is pretty much non existent. I have small hands so my ball control is a bit off once I am airborne. I can make a fast break layup no problem though.

Basketball IQ. I would say that when I am on the court, I know where the open spots will be. Just seemed to come natural to me.
