For the second year in a row, Del Rio students had the chance to rub elbows with an NBA star.
Thursday afternoon, San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker made a visit to the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium to speak with students from the Del Rio Freshman School.
Parker was a guest of Brown Automotive and Brown Chevrolet owner Bob Brown. Brown brought Parker, and his father, Tony “T” Parker Sr., to Del Rio in April 2004 to visit with students at Del Rio Middle School.
This time around, more than 800 students and staff from the freshman school greeted Parker and his entourage as they entered the high school gymnasium.
The visit was intended to allow Parker to provide some motivating comments to the students, but the visit, which lasted about 45 minutes, turned out to be more entertaining for the students and for Parker.
The visit began with Parker fielding questions from the audience. Some questions he avoided, such as “Do you have a girlfriend?”
“I think we all know the answer to that one. Next question,” answered Parker. :lol
Some answers showed Parker’s ability to provide the assist to his teammates.
“Do you think you’re the best player in the NBA?” asked one student.
“Do I think I’m the best? No, but I play with the best player in the NBA, and his name is Tim Duncan,” replied Parker
After Parker finished the question-and-answer session, he offered students the opportunity to win tickets to Saturday’s Spurs home game against the Denver Nuggets.
Each student who answered a question correctly received two tickets to the game.
The questions ranged from what country Parker is originally from (the answer: France) to what college does Parker’s younger brother play for (answer: Northwestern). Parker even challenged the die-hard Spurs fans by asking them how many points he scored against the Phoenix Suns Wednesday evening (answer: 30).
Then Parker decided to have some fun.
With some help from Del Rio High School Rams boys varsity basketball players Jacob Washington, Jamal McKinney and Danny Torres, Parker took part in a first-to-five pick-up game of two-on-two.
With the aid of McKinney, Parker’s team quickly built a 4-0 lead on Washington and Torres.
A quick substitution evened the odds for the Del Rio squad as Jermaine Bishop, a unanimous selection to the District 27-5A All-District First Team, took the court to join fellow first teamer Torres.
Wearing boots instead of his usual sneakers, Bishop stayed with Parker, eventually stealing the ball from the four-year NBA veteran and burying a jump shot over his outstretched arms to stave off the loss temporarily.
Parker eventually played two more games, with the Rams’ Zach Poteat and freshman students Jessica Galindo, Mark Hanson, Patrice Harris, Amanda Soto and Bianka Gallegos, before he and the group departed from the gymnasium.
