View Full Version : POP is a good coach?

What is Pop doing????????????

He has no freaking clue with his rotations.

Why not play Gooden? Why not play Bruce more. Fuck the extra offense. What extra offense are we getting from Ime, Roger, Bonner???????

It's obvious that Tony and Tim don't have confidence to pass them the ball as all they seem to be doing the last couple of games is a two man game between themselves.

Also, did Pop even draw up a play for the game winning shot???? Awful stuff if all the Spurs could get for the game winner was just give the ball to TP to create. Did he even draw up a play to get a three cause that sure as fuck would have been better than what we ended up with TP taking a contested three point airball.

Pop, step up your game! It's March. Find a rotation. Play your best players and stop screwing around. Also, stop telling everyone that we can't win shit with out Manu. Making comments like that all the time is killing the confidence of everyone else on the team.

There is no way in hell we are going to win in the playoffs if Ime gets the most minutes off the bench and if Matt Bonner plays 30 minutes a game. book it.

you can't put gooden in with the game on the line. he just joined the team. pop is of the opinion that you've got to earn your playing time if you're a new guy. he's got to consider the chemistry of the team, and i agree.

the last play was a broken play. obviously tp wasn't meant to shoot a three after losing the ball.

the spurs just got bullied around by a bunch of 20 somethings. they played like pussies. you can't put this on pop.

we had 15 TOs and were 3-19 from three.

pop might have been iffy with the rotations but this loss goes squarely on the players when you play a team like OKC. Pop should chew them out big time for this one.

You can't put the whole loss on Pop, but you sure can question his rotations and play calling. As bad as we played we still could have won that game had Pop draw up a good play to get a 2 or a 3. With the way this game was going and all the hacking from OKC get a shooter a shot to win or tie the game would have been the right play. Even if TP did get to the rack with what the refs we allowing OKC to do then there is no guarantee they would have even called a foul.

Bruce should have gotten more court time. The so called extra offense Pop thought he'd get from the guys out there didn't happen.

Tim and Tony don't even pass the ball to those guys. They'd rather play a 2 man game. I think that might tell you what Tony and Tim think of the players that are out there with them.

I'd say that if Bruce was out there and he had an open three Tim or Tony would get the ball the Bruce right away.

Pop should be chewing himself out for force feeding Finley minutes and allowing Mason to run the point when he clearly cannot handle pressure defense. If he is not hitting wide open 3's, he brings nothing to the table...

I am a bit concern why Pop seems to be shuffling guys and see if the line up gel together.

I dont care if we lost the game against the thunder. It is not half way of the season. Pop should stick to the people that get it done.

There was a long stretch that TD was on the bench. I know maybe pop is giving him rest but we need to give the guy more minutes. He missed some crucial freethrows because he was in the bench for a while. He needed to be warm up again.

In gooden situation. Man this guy needs more minute. Cut the CIA pop and just let him play. The only way you can learn a system is to keep playing more minutes. Sure you sign up a legit PF that can score but please do not make him a reliever for duncan. Make him play with TD.

In bonner situation. I dont know what to say. I have not jump in to his band wagon one bit. If he is on, he is ok. We cannot win with this guy. He sucks.

I hope we play better in this coming months. I can't wait until Ginobili comes back. It is hard to be a Spurs fan in L.A. Bunch of people here are

No way you only put 10% on Pop. He has the team screwed up with all his stupid rotation patterns and lack of defined roles.

Why is Bonner out there instead of KT or Gooden? Why is Mason still running back up PG?

This game should probably end the Mason experiment at back up PG.

Pop is the best coach in the NBA, sorry..every coach has flaws..Laker fans always criticize PJ, Jazz fans with Sloan..you aren't going to agree with everything the coach thinks..

how is he supposed to set a rotation with all the injuries we've had all year? when the 3rd option on the team isn't currently playing and nobody has an idea when he'll return, how can he set a rotation? when Gooden was just added to the team, how is he supposed to have a rotation set?..

he's also had to try out Tolliver, Hairston, and Bonsu..

so obviously he's still fucking with the rotations..he has no other choice..

Ime did do some stuff to earn minutes, but lately he's played like crap so why he is still getting those minutes is something only Pop can answer.

I really want to Bruce to get more court time now. We're not getting any extra offense from the guys Pop is putting out there instead. Tim and Tony have confidence in Bruce too. I'm not sure if they do with with some of the other players.

That is one question I would like an answer for - If these players Pop is putting out there with Tim and Tony are supposed to provide extra offense why are TP and Tim playing a two man game more often?

HarlemHeat37

Ime won't play much when Manu comes back..

Pop isn't going to put Gooden on the floor in clutch time so soon..this is a guy that benched his big 3+Finley vs. a team that was battling us for the 2nd seed..do you think he really cares enough about these random games, that he would bring out all the stops in a meaningless game?..

Pop always has ulterior motives..since Bonner has been struggling lately, how do you know that he didn't just leave Bonner on to see how he reacts?..

We had a big lead to start the game.. but instead of blowing it wide open, Pop used that lead to leave the 2nd string rotational players out on the floor longer. What ended up happening is they let the Thunder back into the game and thats all they needed to be inspired enough to steal the win.

Pop has been doing this all season long to develop and deepen the bench and also bring more cohesiveness on alternate 5 man sets. Early in the season I agree whole-heartedly with this move, but late in the season I guess its debateable.

Its all a matter of perspective. Pop either goes all out in trying to keep developing depth and chemistry in our bench and doesn't give a shit where we end up seeded for the playoffs, or he plays his starters heavy minutes for the sake of insuring regular season wins. As long as we still have a cushion on 3-8 I think he should keep doing what he's doing, but if we keep blowing games maybe he should pull back a bit on all the experimentation.

I dunno pick your poison..

I hope you're right, but it's getting crunch time. How many more games does he need to see Udoka suck. It seems highly unusual that he would consistently Not put Bowen in. Man, Bowen has the experience, the rings, what is going on? Has he lost a step and we can't see it? WTH?

don't sweat it OP. this is classic CIA Coach Pop. His plan is to let us slide down to the 9th seed so everybody forgets about us and starts taking us for granted---then we'll spring into action in the playoffs and the Lakers will be all like "Whoa, wait. What are ya'll doing here? You're the 9th seed, we're supposed to be playing the Mavs this round." And Pop will be all like "excellent, my evil plan has worked--they never saw us coming."

did you watch the game dumbfuck? Anyone who plays Ime for that many minutes, plays Bonner the majority of the 4th quarter, limits Gooden to hardly any time in 2nd half and ZERO minutes in the 3rd quarter DOES NOT know what he is doing. He makes good adjustments in series after the need for them becomes painfully obvious to everyone (recall our defense against the Hornets in last years' playoffs). Pop needs help on the sideline and it's not good that Buttenholzer is helping him out. We need PJ in the worst way. Overplaying Bonner, Ime, and even Fin when he's not hot guarantee an early playoff exit. He totally underutilizes his assets and mucks with the lineup way too much. Why the fuck do you think the fans WHO WATCHED THE GAME are BITCHING, moron??

i agree that pop has made some questionable calls this year one was the lakers game when we were down by 12 points in LA against a lakers team who wasn't playing very well that day so we had a chance to get back in the game but pop decided to sit his starters in the 4th

another one was in dallas last game when the mavs were starting a big run he had tony and tim on the bench for like 5 minutes..put them back in the game pop!

this is one of the deepest rosters that the Spurs have had in some time, which is both a blessing and a curse, in trying to tighten up the rotation for the playoffs........plus he's trying to keep the team fresh for the playoffs........plus we have injuries.......plus the backup PG experiment.......plus we just got Gooden......plus you don't know when Manu is coming back........that is a lot to manage. If Pop can pull this all together, it will be one of his best coaching jobs ever.

Minus all his records/stats, if Pop just started this year, would you still consider him a great coach?
Do you like what he has done with the spurs this year? Do you like his line-ups and decisions?
Do you like how when players get hot, he benches them? Do you like when Mason is our game winnder shot taker, he makes plays for other non-game winner players? Do you like how he gets rid of all the young athletic guys?
Do you like how he pretends to know what he is doing this year? Or did you just like his fucking beard that it turned you on so much that it blinded you this whole season on what he has done. There has been signs off the old spurs this year, but pop usually just dismisses it by playing the scrubs the next game. Or waiving players.

What has made Pop so outstanding this year?

Haha newbie spursfan? You serious? Just because im new here, don’t make me a newbie spursfan. Im from san Antonio born a raised, kid. Regular season matters in many ways. Why do you think we strive to get homecourt every year? Duh kid..common sense. Regular seasons games sends messages and shows how you stand it also lets you strategically pick apart the other team for best results come playoff time. So if the regular season doesn’t matter, how about we just lose all the games and pray to get in the playoffs and beat the elites? I have never lost faith in my team, and never will, I just believe we aren’t playing like we are supposed to, given the injuries.

I don’t need to coach to realize Pop’s questionable moves. NO one does.
So hop off his dick..for once.
He’s not the best coach ever, he’s good, but has made a shit ton of mistakes this year, leading to me questioning him.

nah, I have it at 50% Thunder, 40% Players, 10% Pop

Don't agree with the percentages, but I am happy to see a fellow poster who acknowledges the other team has an affect on the outcome of the game. And Pop didn't coach mssing 16 of 19 3s, the Spurs were off. A 30% Spurs team won't beat a 60% OKC team.

And I agree with Ime and Fin taking too many minutes with Bowen completely rested, but Pop is still a good coach. Also with Hill being the 2 for the last 5 odd games. He just isn't perfect, but then no one is. I'm not an extreme Hoya, but you can't put cold shooting from a few players(Hill, Fin, and Ime equaled 5-24, or 1 of 5) on Pop. I am a firm believer of TITS though.:toast

I know it's cliche, but the true measure of the post ASG season for this year should be when Manu/Gooden play their 6th game together til the end of the year, if they both stay on til the last game.

I also hope Mason reemerges from his mini-slump. I want him to starting taking 8+ shots again, and making 4+ til Manu is back, to have a semblance of the Big 3.

don't sweat it OP. this is classic CIA Coach Pop.

:lmao:lmao:lmao

If he did that and the Lakers got booted in the 1st round at the hands on the Spurs, that would be hilarious. I doubt even CIA Pop could predict the exact number of wins needed to get the 8th seed, it would be theoretically be possible for the 6-8th seeds to go on a tear and ruins that plan. But if he overestimated and ended up 7th, it would all be for naught. At the very least he could knock the ROckets out, instead of the Jazz getting all the fun.

But seriously, who would the Lakers play if the playoff spots don't change, the winner of the Nuggets-Portland series? If that's the case, I hope Portland wins, so they can beat on the Lakers for SA, a la the Hornets of last year. But SA would probably have to face the Hornets again.:bang Good thing they're a worse team now, and SA 09 at full strength is arguably better than SA 08 at full strength(though how often Tim is off in the POs could change that/how rusty Manu is/Goodens chem with the team).

You settle down. The title was more to get people into the thread and also what I thought about Pop's coaching last night. I think I was pretty accurate as Pop coached a poor game.

Maybe I should have made the title 'Pop is a great coach' ;).

Nope, the correct title would've been 'CIA Pop at work'. Taking the most recent crappy outing and starting a thread with a title implying Pop does this on a regular basis, so why would anyone think he's a great coach, is mindnumbingly stupid. Thank god I didn't succumb to flaming your overreacting, sorry excuse for a Spurs fan ass, but you sure got under tparks skin. We usually don't agree, but the idea of you eating a razorblade apple doesn't sound too harsh a punishment right now.:lol

But in all seriousness ice, you should really unplug your internet after a loss, cuz you post before thinking 99% of the time if the Spurs have a brain fart. I'd recommend you take a deep breath and try to think overall, since the blame can be spread around alot more than you imply(the opposing team/coach, Spurs players, injuries, off night for the team as a whole), but if this is cathartic for you, by all means, bash away. You are a bi-polar poster though, so when you're level-headed you make decent points, hence I don't have you on ignore. As opposed to shadowflames/johnnysix, they just bitch and moan on game blogs, so I had to block them for the saftey of my own sanity(don't know how ruff stands it, since apparently he has never blocked anyone). And of course mrspurs, but he focuses his idiocy on general threads, so he's alot harder to dodge if you don't block him.

P.S. I apologize for the long post, but poster I like to refer to as 'bitchers' really get on my case sometimes. If I go to a game with timvp, angelluv, sequ, and kori(apologies to regulars I missed), I'll expect alot of bitching at players and Pop's coaching, but reading it online is so much worse.

I need the stat whores to back me up on this(and it'll be hard with the Timmy tendonosis aspect), but considering the vast number of games his most important 3 players have not played, with Tony injured, Manu injured, Timmy injured, and I'm counting the games where he was 20% due to his current injury, you have to give Pop props. And I wouldn't factor in the Nuggets B2B game, since that was intentional. His record has been stellar considering what he's had to deal with over past seasons. I know the Spurs wouldn't be 1.5-2.5 games behind LA(they're currently 9 behind) if they'd been healthy all year, but they would have a significantly better record. I personally see it as a blessing in disguise overall, with Mason and Hill being thrown in the fire cuz of Manu and TP being out early, allowing them to get chemistry far ahead of schedule.

And call me a nerd, but I'd love to see into an alternate reality where the injury bug was completely reversed between LA and SA. For me, that would mean the Spurs would've been fresh for the most part of the year, with Hill and Mason not being as comfortable in the system, but having Manu, KT, and Fab all in prime shape to start would override that. And the Bynum factor for the Spurs would most likely be Fin/Manu/Mason combining to miss the same number of games Bynum will have missed to end this season(I really don't know where Bynum is with the Lakers, I know he isn't their 1st or 2nd best player, and Odom/Fish could possibly make cases for 3rd). On the la la land side, Kobe would miss 2 games as well as be around 60% for the last 25 or so games, and Pau would miss however many TP/Manu end up averaging this year, plus half their bigs not really being in game shape for a major part of the beginning half of the season. When I type it out, I think SA could quite possibly be 1st now, but as long as they get 1st and 2nd round with homecourt advantage I'm good. I think 3rd place could do that, with the Rockets history of 1st round exits, but you never know.

Completely pointless, idiotic thread.

Anyone criticizing Pop for one game is completely void of any relevant basketball knowledge.

No Pop's been doing it all season. He's been fucking with the rotations. What if we won all those games that he screwed around in. Well guess what?? Maybe we could rest Tim now when he needs it.

Don't go acting like every move Pop does it the best move that could be done.

Pop is a great coach though. It's just that sometimes people don't agree with what he does.

That CiA thing is overrated. Believing in Pop’s “cia” tactics is like believing in doing penis stretches will actually make you grow an inch, haha. So you can stop now.

Every team can see our hand. We lack athleticism and attitude. And we are a jump shooting team. Minus parker, who shouldn’t really be getting a team high almost every game as a PG.

Finally someone with a brain is posting. Time for you blind homer fucktards to shoot him down.
