Duncan out tonight :depressed

http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/03/duncan-to-sit-o.html

Acknowledging some concern about Tim Duncan's sore knees, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich decided to have his All-Star power forward sit out Tuesday's game at the AT&T Center against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the second game of a set of back-to-back games.

"Timmy will sit tonight in the back-to back," Popovich said. "He doesn't love it, but I just think it's important for him to be fresh and healthy for the end of the season. I think one way to do it is to limit the number of back-to-backs you play in down the stretch. That's what I'm doing."

Duncan sat out three games, from Feb. 24-27, with tendonosis in his right quadriceps. He returned for the Spurs' March 1 game at Portland, and had not missed a game since.
Popovich said Duncan's knees have bothered him at various times this season, but stressed that Duncan would have preferred to suit up for Tuesday's game.

"From time to time, Timmy's knees will bother him and it will affect his lay to some degree," Popovich said. "For the most part, he's had to deal with that more than people would know, and done a great job with always being there for us. I'm just forcing him to sit."

Tim didn't play very well against OKC. Whole team was terrible.

Now, Tim is out this game, Manu's still out probably for another 2 weeks minimum and we're playing bad against Minnesota.

This is not a good way to look in the middle of March, a little over a month from playoff time.

If we play like this, we're not getting out of the first round and won't even have to think about the Lakers.

the problem with the threes is that none of them in is in the rhythm of our offense.

i dont know if hes tired but TP needs to be attacking the rim more to initiate our offense.

we are relying on that roger mason high screen and roll way too much.

its not gonna be effective if the guy screening is oberto or thomas because the defense just collapses on mason.

Well, that's an hour of my life I'll never get back.

Pop should start Gooden in the second half and run 4-down every second play for 6 minutes. Gooden will pummel their bigs.

The rest of the team should give up the 3 ball and concentrate on driving or making open 15fters.

And they should defend like their lives depend on it.

We shall see.

Halftime stat lines:

*We're holding the Wolves below 40%. The bad: We're also shooting as bad as them
*We have the edge in ftas 10 against 2.
*We're holding down the're 3 pt shooting by 27%. The bad: We're shooting an abysmal 9% from three. Tolliver sickness all around.
*We have outrebounded them 28 to 19. Oh and we have the edge in off. rebounds for a change. 7 against 1.

Hope TP takes over in the 2nd half and Bonner to get out of his shooting funk.

Pop needs to just keep doing what he has expertise with, being a winning coach. If he needs to limit Gooden minutes or to sit Duncan, etc, then there may be reasons of which "fans" are not aware. 'Wanna be coaches and nba players' giving their "expert" opinions is just a tad humorous.

Spursmania

Mavs<Spurs
03-17-2009, 08:42 PM
Outrebounding the wolves by 8, 28-20 just like we outrebounded OKC.

Of course, without Jefferson, we should outrebound them. And it's not like OKC had any great rebounders (Krstic and Collison) for bigs.

So, it's not some sort of sign or anything.

On the other hand, we've been the top defensive rebounding team this year.

So, it appears that the problem is not defense or defensive rebounding.

It's a sorry offense probably hindered by Duncan's injuries.

yeah good d, good rebounding, and since we're shooting as poorly as they are, our lead is from the free throw differential, which is nice. if you think about all this, then our deficiency right now is jump shooting and since we are a pretty good shooting team, this will get better, right? maybe i'm spinning it too much. because its quite ugly looking. but i feel good about the d and rebounding

What about last season when almost everyone on this message board that said in the Hornets series that we need to put Bruce Bowen on Peja to shut him down.

It took Pop almost three games to do that and we almost lost that series. Lots of people here at ST said that move needed to be made way before Pop did it.

Mavs<Spurs
03-17-2009, 08:47 PM
Bonner has shown a lot less confidence in his shot since Gooden joined the team.

they have different roles and different skills. So, he shouldn't lose that much confidence. If we need a 6'10" 3 point shooter, it will be him and Gooden clearly isn't the player to do that. On the other hand, if we need a more mobile, athletic player, esp one who can score on the low post or create his own offense, then we will go with Gooden.

And it's not like Pop is suddenly going to stop playing Bonner.

I know that they both technically play as pf/c (It's strange to list Bonner as a center even though it happens so much), but they are very different players.

Bonner's go to keep that in mind and make the most of his opportunities. Play with confidence.

My point is that there are inside issues that fans are not savy to. I didn't say Pop was perfect. He did do what he needed to win that series tho. There's no way to know if Bruce on Peja three games earlier would have helped in the long run or not. Peja or their coach could have also made adjustments.
