Tony, will you be on the court tonight against New Orleans ?
I received a knee to the thigh in our loss to Denver. I am having a bit of hard time walking and I can’t put any weigh on my leg. Having talked with Gregg Popovich, I have decided not play tonight. I need the rest to get back in shape physically.
Hence, you join Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili in the Spurs’ training room…
It is weird. Manu will miss tonight’s game but there remains hope for Tim. He is day-to-day, hence he could play tonight but we are all broken up. With the play-offs beginning in a month, Pop wishes not to take a risk and would rather bench us in order to rest.
Tim Duncan played last Tuesday while he sustained an ankle injury two days prior and the result was that he missed the important Phoenix and Denver games.
Pop did not wanted Tim to play but he insisted on him playing against Nets. We don’t need to whine, it is now in the past. Now, we must do with our healthy players. If I played against Phoenix and Denver last week, it was that, at the time, I was the least’ injured (Laughs). I tried to stir the ship but tonight I must give the helm. Priority one is the health of the players if we are all going to keep our home court advantage for the playoffs.
30 points against Phoenix, 25 against Denver, but unfortunately, your performances were not enough to bring home the win for the Spurs.
We have done a very good job against Phoenix. Play head-to –head against the Suns while you are without Duncan and Gino, is not something just any team can pull. The victory came on a few details as we were still tied within two minutes of the end of the game. Against Denver, I cannot say the contrary, but we have messed up. With a 7 points lead with 3 minutes to play, we did not have the right to loose.
Usually, the bench is San Antonio’s strength. Didn’t the bench was a bit powerless during Duncan’s and Gino’s absences ?
It is true that I am a bit disappointed. I was very excited at the beginning of the season when I was looking at the bench but it could be a bit under our 2003 bench, the year we won the title. It is a good thing to have a few injured players as it makes the players on the bench endorse more responsibilities. They have a good challenge ahead of them.
Who will lead the team tonight ?
Beno (Udrih) will start and normally Mike Wilks will be his backup.
