View Full Version : Jersey nixes tim sylva-ray mercer boxing bout

A boxing “superfight” of sorts between former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia and former WBO heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer has been struck from Adrenaline III on May 30 at the Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City, N.J.

Adrenaline promoter Monte Cox alerted MMAWeekly.com of the change late Monday evening.

The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board has refused to sanction the headlining bout, according to Commissioner Nick Lembo, though he declined to comment on the decision.

Adrenaline III will go on as an all-MMA card, and several replacements for the main event are under consideration, including Jeremy Horn.

Adrenaline promoter Monte Cox is currently searching for another venue to host the Sylvia/Mercer tilt, and indicated June as a possibility for the rescheduled event.

The bout with Mercer is to serve as Sylvia’s professional boxing debut, having served an eight-year career in mixed martial arts that lead him to the pinnacle of the sport, twice serving as UFC heavyweight champion.

Forty-seven-year-old Mercer is 36-7-1 as a professional boxer, a gold medal winner in the 1988 Olympics and a former WBO heavyweight champion. Mercer dipped his toes into MMA waters in 2007 with an exhibition bout against Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson, losing by submission early in the first round. His last fight was a boxing match last September in Sweden, where he won a decision over Richel Hersisia.

The fight was originally under consideration as an MMA bout, but in earlier comments to MMAWeekly.com, Cox decided a boxing match would be more competitive.

MMAWeekly.com will continue to update this story as more developments arise.

This is the only part of the story that surprised me. Obviously they aren't going against UFC 100?

Apparently not! Wow, some consistancy in reporting would be nice...

And I used to think Cox was a good manager........

************************************************** ******

Speaking with Sherdog.com, promoter Monte Cox announced the six-round heavyweight fight would be rescheduled for June 13 in Alabama as the main event of Adrenaline III. The hybrid boxing-mixed martial arts event will be held at the 17,000-seat BJCC arena in Birmingham.

Cox confirmed that Alabama does not have a regulatory body to oversee the fight.

lololololololololololololololololololololololololo lolololololololol

The previously announced "Adrenaline III: Sylvia vs. Mercer" headline boxing match between former MMA champion Tim Sylvia and boxing champ Ray Mercer will be held in a mixed-martial-arts cage, Adrenaline MMA CEO Monte Cox confirmed in a Thursday press conference in Birmingham, Ala.

"It just makes sense on so many levels, and it adds another twist to the main event," Cox stated in reference to the cage.

Cox moved the fight to Alabama after the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board refused to approve the fight, which was initially targeted for Atlantic City. Alabama does not have a regulatory commission to sanction the fight, but as MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently reported, Cox insisted the NJSAC's decision was not the reason for selecting the new locale. The longtime promoter instead said a "big sponsor" was the reason for the change.

"Its something I've always wanted to pursue and if it works out like I'd like for it too, I can switch over. I don't want to be done with MMA, but the money is a lot better in boxing. Plus its a lot easier on your body and its a lot easier to train for a boxing match than it is an MMA match."

Asked if a run at a title belt in the boxing world is on his mind, Sylvia is unequivocal. "Yeah absolutely, I would love to fight some of the heavyweight champs, you know? I mean the paydays are ridiculous!" he says, adding with a laugh "$10 million paydays, that is just stupid money."

yeah but man that takes a long time...but maybe he will be fast tracked being a HW?

Update by Brent Brookhouse: I just wanted to point out that I'm not really sure where Cofield's numbers are coming from. One of the hottest American prospects on the heavyweight boxing scene in years is Chris Arreola. Arreola is currently ranked #7 in the world by Ring Magazine. If there is anyone who would be pulling the higher end cash that Cofield claims these #20-50 guys make it would be Arreola. Hell, it should be even higher considering that he is such a hot prospect and well above the top 20 level. However, in his last fight Chris' purse was $400,000. The insane payscale of boxing is a myth beyond the absolute top guys in the sport. Tim Sylvia is not cracking the top 20 of boxing anytime soon, I'd say the safer money for him is in MMA where he is already considered top 10 and can get his regular purse in addition to sponsorship bonuses.

dbreiden83080
06-01-2009, 12:23 PM
Yeah the elite boxing purses are reserved for the Manny Pacquio's, Floyd Mayweathers of the world. If Tim signed to fight Wlad Klitschko tomorrow he is not getting paid 10 mil to do it. His high end MMA salary with the UFC would probably be close to what he would make. And as boxing popularity continues to decline so will the paydays..

Actually, I admire the guy for that. By all reports he was sick as a dog with some horrible flu virus going in that night and he still fought the best fight he could have. Afterward, instead of curling up in a hole and dying of embarrassment as most of us would have done, he kept fighting in the public eye and has taken more nasty comments than is fair for something beyond his control (no pun intended).

It's possible he was thinking, "More weight = more power behind the punches." Or maybe he was just not taking it seriously at all and decided to skip getting into decent shape. Either way, it's going to hurt him now.

You may be right about more weight, means more power being his thinking but since Ray is a real pro, Tim going in there that fat and slow, is not a good idea. He'll win this fight beacause it's MMA. Straight boxing at that weight, put your house on Mercer..

Yeah he didn't train at all for this. I don't know what's his problem? If he has no passion for fighting anymore, then retire. Otherwise get your fat ass in gear and back in shape. Don't take easy fights for paydays thinking you don't have to train, because we saw how that worked out.. Tim was a legit Top 10 Heavyweight in the world once. If i were him, this would motivate me to get moving in the right direction again..

Good point. What kind of manager would lead his fighter to slaughter like that?

Monte is one of the best managers to have as an up and coming fighter but he doesn't do shit once a fighter makes it. So many seem to leave him.

However I have never heard of a fighter making the claim he got fucked over when it comes to dishing out paychecks unlike Ken Pavia who has the worst reputation in MMA from his dwindling pool of fighters. I love reading fighters talk about how they are treated by various orgs and managers on the UG and I never hear anyone say a bad thing about Monte. He just seems like he has a definite ceiling on what he can do with a fighter once they make it
