Rick Adelman has to be in the discussion for what he has done with the rockets w/o mcgrady to this point. Other candidates include Gregg Popovich, Doc Rivers, Phil Jackson, Stan Van Gundy

Definitely. I agree Adelman deserves to be in the talks. I vote Popovich.

Uh? Sloan loses Deron for a month and then plays him on a bad wheel for another two. Loses Boozer (which screwed our depth if nothing else). Loses AK for 3 weeks. And you don't even mention him in your little poll there? I'm not even saying he should win it, but c'mon, I understand the Rockets fans are generally butt-hurt, but it's a blatant slap in the face to not even put his name up there.

Depending on how the Spurs end up I might be inclined to give it to Pop.

+1. More than someone else, I'm not sure, but he's done a good job. I though Bernie Bickerstaff could've gotten it a couple years back. His teams sucked, but they were talentless, scrapped like hell and even as bad as they were, over-achieved immensely.

My vote goes to Rick Adelman. I didn't expect them to even make the playoffs this year, and I was way off. He's got his team playing better than I think they should be playing.

I'm making a joke specifically for you man. I saw how you overreacted to my joke about Brevin Knight and Dragic last night. Just pushing your buttons. You're too sensitive.

Last time was actually the first time I can remember on this site implying anything about Utah Jazz fans being racist. And, my post last night wasn't directed or responding to you. So I found you response to it rather amusing.

I've been called a lot of things in my life because of my ethnicity and how I look. I'm pretty good about not overreacting to jokes.

And if race based jokes roll off your back, cool, I guess you're more personally tolerant of intolerance than I am.

At the beginning of the season there were a lot of critics who felt the Rockets would come out of the West or at the very least push the Lakers into a tough series.

Last year, the Rockets went on a 22 game win streak, mostly without Yao Ming.

Adelman has done well this year, but the entire Western conference has been hit hard with the injury bug. I don't think he quite deserves COY.

Soooo little?

You mean the 2nd best PF in the game, a top 3 point guard, and a deep bench is so little?

I stopped watching the Hawks just this year, so for 2009 I can't say with any authority, but based on 4 seasons of devoutly loyal ATL viewership, Mike Woodson is a loser.

Joe Johnson may not be a superstar in regards to his fame, but he definitely plays like one.

Also, following their impressive performance against the Celtics in last year's playoffs, I don't think the Hawks are doing anything really noteworthy. They got off to a great start in the beginning of the year, but kinda tapered off.

I don't even think Woodson deserves a top 3 spot.

Can his coach get some credit for that?

I just think it is easy to pick those other guys and I like to notice coaches who do well with what they have. I mean how hard is it to coach Tim Duncan?

And saying the Hawks are not a surprise- well, is Cleveland or LA or SA a surprise? At least the Hawks went from 8 to 4 in one season.

Cleveland yes, if only because I didn't expect their defense to be as good as it is.

Joe Johnson has been a stud his entire career. I'm not saying Woodson is a bad coach or anything, but coach of the year is just a bit much.

The Hawks did go from 8 to 4, but like I said before, they were expected to do so considering how well they did in the playoffs last year. They also only picked their up a bit recently, for a better part of the season they were very up and down.

I'll give it to Mike Brown if Cleveland finishes with the best overall record. Sure the Cavs may not win it all, and sure people may have expected a 55+ win season anyway. But they are on pace for a 65+ win season, which is damned impressive. Plus he hasn't won one yet, and the NBA seems to like first-time winners who finish with a top 2-3 record in the league (think AJ, D'Antoni, Byron Scott)

The #2 candidate on my list is Stan Van Gundy for very similar reasons. Beat expectations, will likely finish with around 60 wins, hasn't won one yet.

I'd tip my hat to the NBA if they pick Sloan or Pop, considering what they had to work with. But if history is any indicator, they have very little chance of winning.

Uh the Spurs lose Parker, Manu and Duncan for extended periods of time and still have the #2 seed. If that isn't Coach of the Year material I don't know what is. He won't win it though. They'll probably give it to Phil Jackson instead. You know how David loves his LA Sterns.

I think Van Gundy definitely deserves it. Mike Brown isn't that great of a coach, Doc already won it, Pop and Phil don't need it, Adleman doesn't have a chance, and Sloan shouldn't win just because he's way overdue.

Yet Numb Nutts in turn refuses to get benchies time ie rookie Hill, instead stubbornly continuing to blow Finley.

Same thing he did in the LA Laker loss last playoffs, stubbornly stuck with 60% GNob instead of improvising.

By far the best roster for 6-7-8 of those 12 years, altho the Gasol Collusion made it about even for 2008.

Best roster 8, got only 4. Failed to repeat.

agreed :toast Jazz has suffered lots of injuries this season but sloan still managed to keep his team afloat, and is also very likely to make his team appear in the playoffs for the 3rd straight time after the past two years. and even the result will be the same if they still get rockets as their opponents in the first round. :lol

Rockets have been injury plagued for half a decade, the other half they just plain sucked. To be quite honest, I don't know why I expected the rockets to get far in playoffs from 2004-2007

With scrubs on the team such as Moochie Norris, Jim Jackson, Scott Padgett, Ryan Bowen, Bostjan Nachbar, Bob Sura-who was actually decent, David Wesley, Kelvin Cato, Hell of a supporting Cast.

Coach of the year should be based on ability and merit. While I like Adleman I cannot stand his in game substitution patterns or adjustments. Therefore, I would give Phil Jackson coach of the year honors. If by some miracle Adleman beats Phil and wins it all, ok, then I would begrudgingly give it to RA.
