Gary Busey is one crazy mo'fo....there was an Alex Jones special where he spent an entire day with Gary Busey. I think even Alex was startled at just how crazy he is. He kept telling Alex Jones all these crazy nonsensical aphorisms based off of acronyms. Pretty funny.

Lots of critical acclaim and a long career with a lot of high points, but... kind of hard to be looked at as a full blown success when you slip into uncontested rumors of douchedome and voicing KITT in the Night Rider remake. One of my favorite actors, though.

I think Kilmer is grossly over-rated as it is. He's pretty much sucked in every move I've ever seen him in but one....Tombstone. He was geat in that one but lacking personality in everything else I've seen him in. He has an acting range(outside of Tombstone where he was admittedly great) that ends up making Tom Cruise look versatile, deep and introspective in comparison. IMHO.

Defined failure?

Yes Man cleared $100 mil (in 3 months), Horton Hears a Who cleared $160 mil, Lemony Snickett had over $120 mil, Fun With Dick and Jane cleared $120 mil and Bruce Almighty and The Grinch both went over a quarter billion.

And heck, one of his best movies (Eternal Sunshine) didn't make that much, but he was nominated for a ton of awards.

I guess we have different definitions of failure - I'd say he's doing quite well - even lately.

Squandering your earnings away on coke and whores does not qualify you as a failed careerist. Pauly Shore came up and released like 10 movies in 4 years, and had his own MTV show Totally Pauly, which practically showed him fucking various penthouse models every other show.

Pauly Shore was never destined to be a Christian Bale, he was like Michael Cera in that he had a limited number of movies he could keep portraying the same character.

I laughed my ass off in every Pauly Shore movie made. He's gold. Success all the way.

Depends on what you consider a failure, which is why I almost didn't mention Val Kilmer.

I decided to go with it, though, because that's one of those cases where he has had a career than many actors would envy, but never quite got to the big time leading man status that he probably could have/should have. He's kind of at the status of an A-list character actor, when there was a few years there he could have been a Brad Pitt.

I agree. I think part of the reason was when he was reaching his "peak" (mid-late nineties, right?) there were just too many other good actors making good movies at the time.

The number of Val Kilmer enthusiasts in this thread is kind of alarming...surely there can't be that many people that don't realize he can't act?

Sorry but he sucks...and his lackluster career proves it. It's not like he's had a shortage of good roles to make his mark...nor has he gone out of his way to choose offbeat roles like Jim Carrey has. He just doesn't really make much of an impression IMHO.

I'll tell you what it is...it seems he always takes roles playing characters that are supposed to have a certain level of charisma and he just really has none...I think that's what it is.

Like I said...he pretty much hit a grand slam with Tombstone...because that character came off as charismatic on a very high level...but everything else, what was that movie where he played a genius? Real Genius? Geez...what a horrible miscasting that was. Anson Williams would be more believable as a genius....didn't pull off Jim Morrison. I just don't see the appeal. Probably his second best role was Top Gun...and he actually pulled off having even less depth than Tom Cruise well...probably because it's actually the way it is.

That's a good one....that dude was most excellent.

Having both Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and The Lost Boys on your resume =/= failure.

I thought he (Val Kilmer) was quite good in that film, actually. In fact, it's the only reason I even liked The Doors.

+1

Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison was about the only positive in a typically overblown Oliver Stone vehicle.

As previously stated by others, Kilmer was good in The Doors, Tombstone, Heat, Willow, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Wonderland and Thunderheart. Sounds like the overall consensus is he is a good actor.

And by the way, Real Genius, as much as I like it, is nothing more than a goofy comedy set in a school for smart kids. Not exactly meant to be an award winning performance. The whole point of his role in that movie was that he was incredibly smart but used his brains to have fun and f with people. I've always liked that movie.

Kent: "Good luck, buddy boy."
Chris: "Kent, do you mind if I name my first child after you? Dipshit Knight has a nice ring to it."

Since Training Day Denzel Washington has been meh in alot of his movies. In most of them since the actual co-star has out shined him.

:rolleyes
Like American Gangster?

Russel Crowe didn't exactly outshine Denzel Washington in that movie. Good work, but Washington made that movie.

Don't get me wrong Washington had his moments in that movie no doubt. But my argument was with PW when I was trying to get him to see that Denzel Washington has taken some of his on-screen tendencies since Training Day with him to most of his movies since. I think he is still a easily a draw all by himself. But to be honest I did forget all about AG though.

I'm confused at this point by whether commercial success or success at the art of acting is being debated.

Alan Alda is a huge success imo, because of his mastery of the craft. Doesn't necessarily translate to huge box office #s, but he has had some theatre successes.

On the other hand, Will Ferrel gets a lot of $, but I don't consider him a great actor. He's funny, he's comedic, but he's not really a good actor.
