Parker joins exclusive company (http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/spurs/Parker_joins_exclusive_company.html)
Mike Monroe

Spurs point guard Tony Parker was surprised to learn his first seven points in Sunday's 90-86 loss at New Orleans had brought him to a significant scoring milestone. He's the fourth player in Spurs history to reach 10,000 points in silver and black.

“How would I know that?” Parker said after the Spurs posed for their annual team photo at the AT&T Center on Monday morning.

“I don't keep track of stuff like that.”

Informed that the other members of that club are George Gervin, David Robinson and Tim Duncan, Parker said being in such exclusive company was an honor.

Parker was incredulous to learn he was just the 26th guard in NBA history to reach the 10,000-point milestone, according to research done by the club's media relations staff.

“No,” Parker said, “there has to be more guards. In the whole history of the NBA? It seems like it would be more. That's really amazing.”

Parker reached the milestone at 26 years, 315 days, which was faster than teammate Duncan, who was 26 years, 350 days when he scored his 10,000th point.

Parker believes he has at least another 10,000 points in him.

“I'll try to get 10,000 more before I'm done,” he said. “I hope I've got eight more seasons in me — touch wood, so I don't get hurt. I'll definitely try to get 10,000 more.”

Motivational excess: As if a tough loss in New Orleans on Sunday night wasn't enough motivation, the Spurs enter tonight's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder with the recollection of a 78-76 loss in Oklahoma City in which they blew a 17-point lead and missed 13 of 16 3-point shots.

“Oh, I haven't forgot that game,” Parker said. “I hope we're going to come ready.

“We're still ticked off from the very frustrating loss to New Orleans, so hopefully we'll come back tomorrow and have a lot of energy against them.”

Oberto examined: Center Fabricio Oberto went straight from the team's photo shoot to an examination by one of the team's doctors. The third-year center from Argentina has missed the last two games after suffering an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) on Friday morning.

Oberto's heartbeat has been monitored daily since it was re-started in a brief procedure on Friday. Pending the outcome of Monday's exam, he is expected to be returned to active availability this week.

Say cheese: The team's official portrait took hours to set up on center court at the AT&T Center, but less than five minutes to shoot, once the players, coaches, basketball operations staff and ownership group representatives were in place.

Not only did the person in the "club's media relations staff" fail, but so did Monroe for not doing his own fact checking. Obviously Parker was right.

Maybe they meant pg's...or maybe he's the 26th to do it under the age of 27(this sounds about right)...

In any case...I'll be real impressed if Parker finishes his career with 10k assists :tu

Looking at that list could be they meant he was the 26th PG to do it but I'm not 100% certain...I counted 26 PG's on that list other than Parker but I could have gotten a few of them wrong.

I'll be real impressed if Parker finishes his career with 10k assists :tuNot going to happen. He could average eight assists per game for the next ten years, never miss a game and still be shy of 10K.

Still pretty impressive...there are PG's in this league with retired jerseys that only scored 8817 or so points in 16 year careers.

Not going to happen. He could average eight assists per game for the next ten years, never miss a game and still be shy of 10K.

Yeah but in 10 years he'll only be 36...if he's a Spur still he'll probably still be starting. When Duncan retires his assists are going to go up.

It'll be tough as hell to pull off...but that's why I said I'd be impressed.

How many assists did John Stockton have by the age of 26? I bet the number might be surprising when contrasted with how many he finished his career with.

whottt
03-31-2009, 12:12 AM
Looking at it...John Stockton had 3,661 assists at the age of 26 or about 300 more than Parker has now. Granted Parker's not going to challenge Stockton's career mark...but 10k assists is a long way(5000 or so) off Stockton's career mark. 10k is possible for him..at least age wise.

The most impressive stat I've found is that Parker has more points before his 27th birthday than all but 33 players in NBA history ... and only eight of those players were guards. Plus, he still has the rest of the regular season.

TP and the rest of the Spurs of course will never get the credit and attention they deserve. ESPN will suck off Chris Paul, Deron Williams, hell even Jason Kidd sometimes before they even bring up TP. What a shame...

I've seen that "only the 25th guard to score 10,000 points" statistic brought up a few times and thought there is no possible way that that is correct. What an an absolute fuck up.

Probably not biba...for instance, out of the first 10 players on timvp's list? All 10 scored their 10 thousandth point while with their first club.

He's listed officially as forward I think, or "guard-forward" - same as Drexler, who is in the list above... the line is not always clearly defined.
