Howard passes Chamberlain as youngest to reach 5,000 rebounds (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/basketball/nba/03/30/howard.rebounding.ap/index.html)

Orlando center Dwight Howard became the youngest player in NBA history to get 5,000 career rebounds Monday night, when he grabbed his 11th of the game against the Miami Heat.

Howard reached the mark at the age of 23 years, 112 days -- smashing the previous record held by Wilt Chamberlain, who was 25 years, 128 days old when he got his 5,000th rebound.

Howard was already the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 1,000-, 2,000-, 3,000- and 4,000-rebound marks.

In all fairness to Chamberlin, he started his professional career at the age of 23 (if you don't count the Globetrotters).

Having said that, Howard, if he continues on his current trajectory, should be in the top five greatest centers of all time list by the time he retires.

He's a special athlete.

He's a special athlete.

But he's still orders of magnitude behind Wilt. Break it down by number of games required to get to 5000 rebounds and you quickly prove that.

Different eras. No way Wilt would average 20+ a game in today's league, even as center deprived as it is.

Kareem
Wilt
Dream
Shaq
Moses

He's gonna have to win multiple rings to do that. Definitely won't scratch the top 4, not good enough offensively.

I'm not sure he makes the top 8.

In no order:

Kareem
Wilt
Shaq
Dream
Duncan
Moses
Robinson
Ewing
Karl Malone
Andrew Bynum

Until he gets a consistent jumper, Dwight isn't getting into the top 10.

Clearly a wasted draft pick and fluke player...

Until he has a desire to win, he won't go down as a great.

Yao still owns him, every single game they have played.

Yeah, Dwight dominates until he faces Yao. At the same time, Yao gets outplayed by quicker 6'9" players who push him down low. Go figure.

Maybe... I could see him at 5. Certainly no higher though; definitely not above Abdul-Jabbar, Chamberlain, Olajuwon, or O'Neal.

Wilt averaged over 27 rebounds per game his first two seasons, and it dipped to under 26 his third season as he was too busy increasing his scoring from 38 ppg to 50 ppg. He averaged 21 rebounds per 36 minutes his rookie year.

Maybe Yao to Howard is what D-Will is to Paul.
