BASKETBALL Australia has appointed NBA assistant and former National Basketball League coach of the year Brett Brown as the new head coach for the Boomers to guide the team through next year's world championships and the 2012 London Olympics.

Brown will replace NBL coach of the year Brian Goorjian, who coached the Boomers through the past two Olympics.

Brown, who hails from the US, has worked at the San Antonio Spurs since 2002, becoming an assistant coach there in 2007. But he also has a strong connection to Australia, having coached in the NBL for 14 years, first as an assistant to Lindsay Gaze, then in the top job at the North Melbourne Giants, where he won a championship in 1994, and three years with the Sydney Kings.

The new coach has promised to tap the extensive global resources of his NBA club to help prepare the Boomers for international tournaments.

"We all know that to get to where we want to go, we're going to have to knock off some European powers and I'm very lucky to have a tremendous resource when it comes to scouting Europeans," Brown said yesterday.

The new coach has also used his US connections to secure the Boomers a spot in the NBA summer league tournament in Las Vegas in July, as well as invitations to play against Brazil and Argentina.
