View Full Version : Mavs post-Nowitzki

I was just watching the Mavs-Wolves game and one of the commentators talked about how a first round exit and Kidd leaving in the summer could trigger a KG-type situation, whereby Mavs decide to rebuild and trade their star for young guns and picks.

What would be good value for the Mavs? Would they go for a package centered around Aldridge (plus picks plus one or two from Rudy, Sergio, Pryzbilla and Bayless).? Would that be good for the Blazers? What other teams can offer suitable packages? Warriors? Bulls?

Why would the blazers trade Aldridge for a Has-Been?

in all honesty Dirk has had a great career and he's a great player but if he's here next year then i cant watch them anymore. it's been clear to me that Dirk would be a great second option. the fact that he just settles for jumpshots all the time unsettles me. he had a chance for a layup against Cleveland and instead tried a bank shot and bricked it. he can't lead this team singlehandedly to where they wanna go, he's not that good anymore (not sure if he ever was)

Also, I think he should fake an injury so the Mavs can get some lotto balls.

Why would the blazers trade Aldridge for a Has-Been?

Watching the Blazers I can't help but feel that they need a second big-time scorer and I'm not sure that Aldridge can do that consistently. The Blazers can win now if they add another star player, assuming Oden develops and satys healthy.

Nowitzki can play at a good level for 3 years. His numbers are great even in a year that he seems so unmotivated. Maybe he is indeed slowing down as some suggest, but even so I doubt Aldridge can ever be as good as Nowitzki will be in the next two years. They could win a championship with Roy as a leader. Maybe that's the situation that he needs.

Again, would/should the Blazers and Mavs do it? What other options are there for them?

This is a tough spot for the Mavs if Kidd walks. I don't think we can blow it up. It's fucking stupid to when the Nets have our pick (ugh), and I'm pretty sure it's not protected by the lottery (can someone confirm?). What's the point of having a shitty year if you don't get high draft pick talent out of it?

I'd try to shop Dampier/Stackhouse/Howard and try one last run (said that last year :lol) and then blow it up.

OR you can have a fire sale at the 2009-2010 trade deadline if the teams barely hovering above .500 and prevent the Nets from collecting a high draft pick.

It really made no sense to have the 2008 pick protected by the lottery and the 2010 pick unprotected.

Quite frankly I'd rather go 41-41 w/ Dirk next year than 26-56 (assuming Dirk was traded) and watch the nets collect a top 5 draft pick.

That's an interesting thought. At some point (when their young guys develop) the Thunder need to make a move for a veteran star to push them to the contender level. Pity the Chandler trade didnt go through. Him and Nowitzki could complement each other well. A Chandler-Nowitzki-Durant frontline would be quite a prospect.

The Rockets/Sonics '93 series was decided in the last few minutes of a game 7.
If they won, the Rockets would have faced the Suns (the Bulls' Finals opponent) who they beat the following year. The Rockets would of had a better chance of beating the Bulls than the Suns did.

It's true he's a great 1st option, but I'd land him in a team where he's argueably the first and most likely the second. Take the pressure of him and see what happens.
If I were Mark Cuban I wouldn't re build without him, but with him. Throwing everyone else away and starting it all over. I think that since tht 2006 finals the Dallas team hasn't been the same (of course) but most of all Cuban tried to patch the hole bringing Kidd (an easy choice) instead of being wise.

Bad luck is the only reason Nowitzki's legacy is somewhat tainted. Dirk should be viewed as an NBA Champion and an MVP, not an underachieving choker, or a great player who never won a ring.

In 2006 the Mavs won a championship, but the whistles decided the faggot primadonna sex addict wheelchair bitch who doesn't deserve his ring is more marketable than our big German. 97 free throws in 6 games.

Dirk's clutch shot in game 5 is forgotten due to whistles sending D-Wade to the line with 2 seconds left.

And Dirk had 29/15 in game 6, while his team mates shot 33%. Notable is Terry and Howard combining for 12-41 shooting.

In 2007 the Mavs didn't actually choke to the Warriors. We all saw that series, did the Mavs really look like a 67 win team and did the Warriors really look like a 42 win team? No, because the Mavs weren't really a 67 win team, they had an inflated record due to a 20-4 record in games decided by 5 points or less, and the Warriors had a deflated record due to injuries. In retrospect it was just a bad matchup and not as big a choke as some make it out to be. Dirk simply had a bad closing game, it's not as if he played poorly in all 6 games. In fact, his brilliance in game 5 was the only reason there was a game 6 in the 1st place.

These were the 2 years the Mavs had the best chance to win it all. In 2005 and 2004 the Suns/Kings were simply better, in 2003 Kerr hit a bunch of fluke shots and Dirk missed the final 3 games of the series, and the years before that the Mavs had a style of play not conducive toward contending.

In retrospect I think the Mavs were capitalizing on a down time in the NBA. They say jump shooting teams cannot win titles but the Mavs were able to in 2006 in part due to weaker competition. The only reason the championship window was open was: Lebron and Kobe were on shitty rosters, Amare was out in the 2006 season, young talents like Roy/Williams/CPWhistle/Howard/Durant were too young or not in the league altogether. The Big 3 in Boston didn't exist, etc. Now all these obstacles exist. The Lakers are here to stay for a few years and the Thunder/Blazers/Jazz are on the upswing. Oh how I weep for the beloved Mavs.

I actually agree with everything you say. I remember me and my brother discussing how Wade was getting all these calls. It was ridiculous.

About Dirk, I first saw him in Hoop Summit when the best U.S. high school players went up against the World's best. I believe it was Al Harrington's class. Anyway, no one could stop Dirk. He kept driving to basket every play. He didn't even have to shoot. It was amazing for someone his size. I thought he was going to be a dominating college player, but he made the right choice and went in the Draft when Nelson made a great trade. Imagine the Bucks with Cassell, Allen, Big Dog, and Dirk? They would have easily beaten Philly in the ECF and maybe stolen a couple of games against the Lakers. Dirk's surpassed my expectations. He's a definite Hall of Famer.

It probably will be considering that was the biggest margin of victory ever in a game 7 compared to about the 4th time an 8th seed beating a 1 seed.

Yes, Al Harrington and Rashard Lewis. It doesn't happen that often around here that I agree completely with Ghazi, but like you I agree this time.

Btw, I went through the whole thread and it's somehow ridiculous how the topic changed from the original headline into a moshpit between Houston and Dallas... Where's the sense? Well, maybe I'm not that involved into your "fights", because I'm not from Texas, but somehow this discussion is getting lame.

Title smack is fucking immature. Everyone who partakes in it sounds like a fucking retard when they do. Isn't it more or less somewhat equivalent to someone talking shit about their favorite movie winning an Oscar to someone whose favorite movie didn't win an Oscar? After all it's the same fucking thing, we're just spectators. I think so.

Yeah sook, ALL Dirk can do is shoot 3's. Never mind the fact that 85% of his shots come from inside the arc, Dirk is getting into the hall of fame on his 3-PT shooting alone. I suppose Peja fucking Stojakovic is a hall of famer since he's a better 3-PT shooter than Dirk. Shut the fuck. And you mention Garnett even though he's more or less nothing more than a jump shooter on the offensive end in this stage of his career.

Conclusions: Mavs are the 2006 NBA champions because they got shafted by the refs, and the Rockets champions from 94 and 95 don't count. :smokin

I agree with Jordan and Kareem over Duncan. But what about Russell or Chamberlain? I mean, Duncan ist for sure a lock in the Top 10, no doubt about that, but players like Russell, Chamberlain or Magic are there as well and IMO at least on the same level as Duncan.

IMO, Robertson belongs to the squad as well. One of or perhaps the most versatile player ever. 181 career triple doubles, only player ever to AVERAGE a triple double over an entire season, NBA Champ, NBA MVP, Allstar-Game MVP, ROY, 9x All-NBA First team etc.... what do you want more?

And I agree, Thomas and Pippen over Duncan is a joke. But Pippen was a nice player though. I'm not sure whether Jordan could have collected his rings without him or not... okay, but that doesn't move him over Duncan, that's right.
