The Radford University campus in southwestern Virginia was put on lockdown tonight after a man was fatally shot off campus and the suspect fled onto the school grounds, university officials said.

Few details about the shooting were released late tonight. Police were called just after 9 p.m. in response to the shooting, which occurred a few blocks from campus, said Michael Hemphill, a university spokesman. The victim, who was not immediately identified, was taken to New River Valley Medical Center.

Students were told to lock themselves indoors as police searched for the suspect, who remained at large.

If guns are so benign, why are so many of them sold in the black market?

Look, no one is saying that Americans shouldn't have something to protect themselves with. Those that wish to have gun control only want unnecessary weapons to be banned.

There is no reason why Americans should have access to automatic weapons. All you really need is a rifle and a shotgun.

A rifle will take care of your hunting needs, eventhough the majority of Americans don't hunt, and a shotgun will take care of defending your family and home.

Um ... where was the shooting AT Radford? If I read the story right, the shooting was off-campus and not campus related. Is it scary and potentially dangerous that there is a guy who might be lose on campus like that? Absolutely. But the title of this makes me think there was a shooting AT Radford, and that wasn't the case.

Peewee, what's the solution to rid the world of violence?

It's never going to happen. We need violence to keep the population in check.

Rid the world of weapons . . .

In the real world, is that possible?

actually smith and wesson just did a recall because one make was firing without the trigger being pulled. in that sense, a gun could have killed people.

Totally disagree. Its like the people who bitch about people who drive those big, gas-guzzling trucks. Youre upset until your Honda gets stuck in the snow and Mr. Big Truck pulls/pushes your ass free out of the kindness of his heart because TripleA is kind of busy that day.

Without those fuming gun nuts, you dont own a shotgun or rifle.

Riddle me this: Police forces countrywide are becoming more and more like a military force than civilian law enforcement. They say its because they encounter criminals with better, more deadly firearms.

My question is, would this trend of a para-military police force rise in implementation or fall if semi-automatic weapons were banned?

Totally disagree.

Explain to me why you need more than a rifle to hunt. I mean, the native tribes got along just well with spears and bows and arrows. Why do you need automatic weapons to hunt?

Explain to me why you need more than a shotgun to defend your family and home? A shotgun will blow anything away. And, trust me, when burglars, or whatever wrong doer it may be, hears that shotgun go off, the last thing on thier mind is to stand and fight.

I want you, or anyone else, to explain to me why Americans need access to automatic weapons.

Wrong.

It's gauranteed in this thing called The Constitution.

No one will ever take that right from anyone of us.

The first part of this post was correct.

Criminals are arming themselves with better weapons. It's only fitting that our police force have the necessary weaponry to counter criminals.

I don't know what country you're living in, but none of our Constitutional Rights have ever been taken from us.

To fear such a thing is ridiculous.

Everyone knows that automatic weapons serve only one purpose- to kill lots of people.

While I don't think automatic weapons are necessary, I agree otherwise with Dark Reign.

There have been a lot of rights guaranteed that have been run over or infringed on in various ways. And I know that there are a lot of anti-gun folks who do not believe that the second amendment guarantees the rights to gun ownership, so I would not for a second stop supporting appropriate gun laws.
