Manu is done for the season and for the playoffs! :(:bang

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that guard Manu Ginobili will miss the remainder of the 2008-09 regular season as well as the 2009 NBA Playoffs.

Ginobili felt stiffness in his lower right leg during the Spurs-Cavaliers game in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon. Following the game he returned to San Antonio. Earlier today, in San Antonio, he underwent a CT scan and an MRI. The examinations showed an increased marrow edema and a stress fracture in his right distal fibula.

Now let's turn back the clock to 1997. Let's switch places with PHX, get into the draft lottery and go get Blake Griffin. Come back and win the whole thing next season. :lol

Seriously though, this sucks balls. However, I'm a bit relieved because from watching Manu, I just sensed he wasn't right. Now we don't have to wonder.

With Manu out, Duncan ailing and Parker carrying the heavy load, the Spurs are now more vulnerable than at any time in the Duncan era.

I feel that it's the Lakers and then everyone else. Now, the Spurs will have to be perfect just to win each round, regardless of the opponent. Hill needs to play now, Mason needs to get hot, Gooden needs to get smart, and the rest of the role players will have to play out of their minds. That's assuming Duncan and Parker can score 30 a night. Cock.

Unless Duncan heals and TP averages 50ppg I can't see us going far. Hopefully we can at least win one round. The bench really needs to step it up now. Mason needs to go back to being the assassin he is and hopefully Hill will get some playing time now. Second, Spurs season is done. I hope now Spurs will lose quickly in playoffs. A long offseason will be nice for Duncan with his knees and for parker with French NT.

Third, the question about what to do with Manu after 2010 is wide open. If he doesn't have an all star season in 09-10, he will be either gone or back in a limited role in 2010.

Ginobili out for the season (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/spursworld/2009/04/ginobili-out-for-the-season.html)
By Joe Alexander

The Spurs announced today that Manu Ginobili will miss the rest of the season, including the 2009 playoffs, due to an ankle injury.

Ginobili underwent a CT scan and an MRI today. The diagnosis was an "increased marrow edema and a stress fracture in his right distal fibula."

Ginobili has played in 44 of the Spurs' 76 games this season, making seven starts. He averaged 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists.

He started the Spurs' last three games - a victory over the Indiana Pacers and losses to the Oklahoma City Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers. Ginobili played 23 minutes on Sunday in Cleveland and scored four points on 2 of 9 shooting.

Ginobili had offseason left ankle surgery after suffering an injury in the 2008 summer Olympics. That caused him to miss the first 16 games of the 2008-09 Spurs season.

Stress fracture sidelines Ginobili for season (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ys-ginobiliinjured040609&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)
By Johnny Ludden

The San Antonio Spurs’ playoff hopes took a severe hit on Monday when the team announced star guard Manu Ginobili will miss the remainder of the season, including the playoffs, because of a stress fracture in his right leg.

Ginobili experienced stiffness in his right leg during Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. An MRI and CT scan taken on Monday revealed the stress fracture.

We can all only be so lucky as to see this guy come back next year at full strength. The league needs Manu Ginobili. He is truly a special basketballer. I think he may be God. Except he has bad ankles.

Where is Mr. Miyagi when you need him? Damn you, Pat Morita!!!! Come back to life and reprise your role of Mr. Miyagi and rub your hands together, with purpose, and then apply your hands to the ankles of one, Manu Ginobili, and let him crane-kick his way to the 2009 NBA Finals!

I miss him already..............

Anybody know what's next?

saw this on the yahoo sports page... so sad. this effectively ends the spurs' playoff run before it even started. lingering injury issues may make 2009-2010 just as disappointing. hope ginobili recovers well but two injuries after major surgery is not a good sign. if i was in more of a forgiving mood, i probably would have come up with a more encouraging post.

This was a freakin' wasted season for Manu. In hindsight, I wish he would've skipped the Olympics. That's just me being a selfish fan, but his injury, along with Tim's injury has basically sunk the season.

Agreed. I told ya Manu was stupid for playing this past summer while hurt. His decision to put his real teamates over us has finally caught up with him. He caused Timmy to burn out already. Wonder how that silver medal feels now?:lol Thanks Manu for nothing. Bet he'll be back in Argentina playing this summer again. All I can say is..................I told yall so. Im sure yall can still remember Pop grabbing Manu away from the cameras when he arrived here after the summer. The look on Pops face then was made for today. He knew it, most real Spurs fan knew it. Hey Manu if you want to kill your body go for it. But remember you have teamates who have to step it up when your out for not listening to your elders. And your teamates are old. Fire his behind or trade him. He is not a true teamate of our San Antonio Spurs.

I don't blame Manu..he did what he did..nobody can predict the future..just like his play on the court, you live with the good and the bad..he cost us the series in 2006 due to his foul, he fucked up this year with the injuries(not really his fault though)..on the other hand, he's been a significant factor for us winning 3 titles, and a huge factor for the 2005 title..

you live with the good and the bad..hate him if you want, but realize how much he's given this franchise..nobody can ever accuse him of not wanting to win, and not giving it his all..

Manu to miss remainder of season (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/04/manu-to-miss-re.html#more)
By Mike Monroe

The stiffness Spurs guard Manu Ginobili felt in his right ankle during Sunday's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers turned out to portend the worst possible news for the star guard and the Spurs: A stress fracture that will cost him the remainder of the season, and the playoffs.

Ginobili had returned to game action March 25 in Atlanta after missing 19 games with a stress reaction in his right distal fibula. Sunday's game was his sixth since returning to the lineup, and followed three games in which he had totaled 50 points. After scoring 16 in a victory in Indianapolis on Friday, Ginobili had reported that he felt "super."

When the ankle stiffened Sunday, he sought advice from the team's athletic training and conditioning staff, and was sent back to San Antonio for a CT scan and MRI. The results of tests conducted Monday morning showed the stress fracture, and the determination that the team's starting shooting guard would miss the remainder of the season.

No timetable has been set for when Ginobili will return to the court.

Ginobili began the season on the injured list after surgery on his left ankle that was conducted in September. He missed 12 games, but returned Nov. 24, when he scored 12 points in a Spurs victory in Memphis.

In late January and early February, Ginobili put together a string of games that appeared to show he was back to his All-Star form. He averaged 24.0 points in the six games that preceded the All-Star break, including three games with 30 or more points. His high game for the season, a 32-point output at Toronto on Feb. 11, was his last game before the stress reaction was discovered just after the All-Star break.

Marrow edema is a generalized response to either trauma or stress of the bone marrow. Bone marrow edema may be the first recognizable MR finding in many conditions, including transient synovitis, trauma, stress, infection, ischemia, tumor and reflex sympathetic dystrophy. MR imaging is exquisitely sensitive for detecting the presence of marrow edema.

Listen douchebag. Just because you're not a real fan and you're completely negative doesn't mean this team is giving up. I had a college scholarship and a knee issue took it away from me. The school overreacted, and I was fine by the next year. Truth is, Timmy's knees are hurt, but it's something that the offseason will heal. If you completely give up, you're not doing anything to help the city, or the team, or it's fans. Check out our winning percentage before Manu and after...we were doing fine, because we didn't have any chemistry issues. Mason played the SG position, George Hill got playing time, and Bruce played more. That would DEFINITELY help out. If you want to give up, that's fine, but don't say you're a Spurs fan if you do..

There's likely to be an interesting connection between this season and the 1999-2000 season in the history of the Duncan era.

Only twice in Duncan's time in SA has his team failed to reach 56 regular season wins -- 99-00 was the other (assuming you pro-rate the '99 season, in which 37 wins would have put the Spurs on pace to win 60+). Likewise, the 99-00 season has been the one blemish on the Spurs' streak of winning at least one playoff series every year since 1997-98.

In both cases, the Spurs had an injury-riddled regular season with a vital contributor from the prior year shelved for much of the season (in 1999-00, it was Sean Elliott and his return from the kidney transplant). It also might well be that in each season, the Spurs choose to shelve Tim Duncan for the end of the regular season and the post-season, to save him from further injury to a knee.

If it's going to cause more damage to Duncan for the rest of his career to play hobbled right now, then I would just shut him down for the season and let Parker go freestyle and go down in the first round fighting with all the youngsters on the court.

She must not be a real fan either.

Your story about your knee was touching, though. I'd like to think Duncan has better medical personnel at his disposal.

I think it would be better for the Spurs to rest Duncan and let some of the younger guys get some burn in the PO. No reason to risk making it worse.

We are done. The duncan era's championships and close calls (except 99) have always come down to manu. He has won three for us but he has also blown several for us. He is injury prone and its time to start shopping him on the market.

I think you're in denial.

So basically you can't come up with anything before the end of last season.
Why am I not surprised...
And BTW, the first three 'injuries' in your post are the one and the same. It required surgery, he did it over the summer and recovered well.
The last two 'injuries' are the current injury.
So basically it's two completely unrelated injuries, just like I said.

Tell you what fool, believe what you want. At least people now know you talk out of your ass.

At this point in his career it's obvious that he's injury prone. His body is wearing down.

You got upset cause i said he was made of glass...i apologize if i hurt your feelings. You're talking about a player that has to be held to under 25 mpg just so that he's healthy for the playoffs. Is it really that hard for you to accept?

it has nothing to do with hurting anyones feelings. You obviously have a very different definition of injury prone and what being hurt on a consistent basis or not means

You may have a point if the guy was missing good amounts of time most seasons and time in the playoffs as well...but that isnt the case.

I mean trying to put Manu getting injured in the playoffs last year on being simply injury prone makes no sense....anyone could have been injured at that point

I think so too. With TP playing at the level he is, and still having TD we should be able to get there at least. Mason filled in for Manu while he was out with 30 mpg and either 20 points or so every night. Mason is a scorer...something we didnt have last year at this time. I still believe. Do you? :flag:

i think spurs fans' pessimism over ginobili's health started last year in the playoffs when he obviously played on a hobbled ankle. then it started to gain ground when ginobili wore that boot over the summer while deciding to still play in the olympics. when ginobili went down during the olympics and required major surgery, those voices got a little louder. when he injured his other ankle, the voices got even louder. and now that ginobili is shut down for the rest of the season, the pessimism is harder to ignore.

I don't think so. I think they'll just freestyle it on offense and try to outscore people. Duncan and Bowen need each other defensively, and if Duncan is this hobbled, it's pointless. They need to just try to throw the young guys on the floor with Parker and go "Summertime" as Pop calls it.

Spurs have been lucky over the years in terms of major injuries. While the old saying is that you make your own luck, sooner or later the luck will end and this season seems to be proving the point.

Get better, Manu.

Wow what a kick in the nads, Manu is done for the season I sure as hell hope those olympics were worth it. You were hurt the team told you not to go and to heal up and you went anyway and got hurt worse. I don't care how you or the team try and spin this, it was a bad decision and is just the excuse that mr low ball holt needs to hold over your head when contract negotiations start up which should be any time now. Karma is a stone cold witch we'll see which way this plays out but at a minimum this is going to cost manu big. Heal up get well and chalk it up to one of life's little lessons that will end up costing you a few mill minimum lol.

Spurs have been lucky with major injuries? disagree..

Duncan has had major injuries MULTIPLE times during the playoffs..the only luck we had there was that he's a legend and top 10 player of all-time that played at a high level THROUGH the injuries..

Manu had a major injury last year..

we haven't really been fortunate to "avoid" injuries..we've definitely had them..

DPG21920

If the Spurs shut Duncan down why not shut TP down? I mean if you are going to tank, just tank. No point in having Parker out there frustrated with the possibility of getting hurt. I hope the Spurs do not shut Duncan down. If he is truly in pain, then ok, but if he can play and it won't get worse and the time off this summer is more than sufficient, let him play.

I remember when there were rumors of trading Manu, and as hard as it would have been, I probably would have because this is the kind of thing I thought could happen.

Having said that, if Tim plays you have to understand that the NBA is all about guys stepping up, there are a lot of guys that if given the chance can do really special things, we see it all the time when guys go down, look at Matt Cassel (I know that's not basketball but it's the first that came to mind).

If Tim Duncan is shelved than so are we.

Basically I think that bone marrow adema shit is just technical jargon for the injury looks worse than it did before. I wouldn't read too much into it.

That being said, we've all see the way Manu handles injuries and wear and tear and not to be a broken record, but this is only going to get worse as it goes on. Manu can probably be a damn big piece to any championship team, but will be the best player o this team? I don't know but I wouldn't bet on it. In the past Manu WAS the best player on the team during portions of their championship run.

And maybe he doesn't need to be, considering how much TP has improved.

In any event, trading him now is pretty worthless unless you recieve a damn good offer. Trading him next year at the deadline is a possibility considering he's in the last year of his contract and he may be seen as an attractive piece but considering Pop's history I would not see him making a move unless it brought him someone very very good.

Well the injury is a fracture now, not a stress reaction. So that's already indicative that it's much worse than before. I just hope that swelling of the marrow isn't another problem that is going to be ongoing into next year.
