After an extensive search of my own, I found a good site that can help you on your quest.

http://www.spurstalk.com

This is a place with a lot of traffic, and judging by the absolutely certainty and firm stubbornness of most of the contributors, they have quite a bit of knowledge too.

I've only poured over the material of the past year or so, but based on the attitudes of the majority, I've concluded that the Spurs have never made the playoffs, much less won any championships.

I hope this helps.

Tough question with that trophy count.

But all I know is that the spurs were always contenders since Timothy Theodore Duncan came to Alamo City.
Shit they are the most winningest pro sports team this decade.

By definition, only 3 franchises in the NBA could have ever had a better run than the run that these Spurs are on -- after all, only 3 franchises (all of which have been in the NBA much, much longer than the San Antonio Spurs have) have won as many as 4 titles. Obviously, the Russell/Havlicek/Cowens Celtics (13 titles in 20 years), the Jordan Bulls (6 titles in 8 years), the Magic Lakers (5 titles in 9 years), and the Mikan Lakers (5 titles in 6 years) have won more. But nobody else -- nobody in the history of the NBA.

Not the Jerry West Lakers.
Not the Shaq/Kobe Lakers.
Not the Bird/McHale/Parish Celtics.
Not the Bad Boy Pistons.
Not the Hakeem Rockets
Not the Doctor J Sixers.

Even if you're focus is solely on the future, take just a moment to think about the enormity of that fact. If titles are the name of the game, there are only maybe 5 teams -- playing against differing levels of competition -- that have had streaks that were both this long and this successful. And, I think it's worth mentioning that the Spurs have accomplished that while having to go through 4 rounds of playoffs (something only the Jordan Bulls faced) and while having to win 7 game series in all 4 of those rounds on three different occasions (something nobody else has had to do).

The accomplishment is all the more enormous when you add to it the fact that the Spurs in the Duncan era have been legitimate contenders for the title in every season; that they've become one of only 3 clubs in league history with 10 consecutive seasons of 50+ wins -- and have done it without having just eeked out a 50 win season; that they've done it with a variety of casts; and that they've had a top 4 seed for at least 10 straight seasons.

I get that some aren't satisfied. But it's awfully short-sighted -- to me at least -- to even try to downplay the significance of those accomplishments or to refuse to appreciate their historical context.

I've been a fan since 1978 and would have remained a fan forever even if the last decade hadn't happened. But man, that decade sure has been sweet -- and historically elite, too.

It's good to be a Spurs fan.

Great post.

Its amazing that so many fail to appreciate what San Antonio has in the Spurs. I've been here since March, 2003 when San Antonio became the last stop after 20+ yrs in the Army. We were amazed by how visible Spurs fandom was everywhere we went. Flags on cars, giant banners on buildings, vendors selling Spurs gear on practically every corner, and people wearing Spurs shirts and hats in schools and businesses.

That was what we saw in the San Antonio of March, 2003. The San Antonio that had just the one lone trophy earned in the season between the Jordan Bulls and the Shaq/Kobe Lakers. In those ancient days of 6 years ago, imagine the odds you could have gotten on a bet that the Spurs would win at least three more championships before the Lakers would win even one more.

And yet despite the continued success, the level of excitement in the city has dwindled each year since 2003. But I've seen this before. We lived near Atlanta from 93-99. The Braves had lost in the Series and 91 and 92 and there was a great buzz about the team. In April 93, I signed my then 6-yr old out of school to take him to a midweek day game. We got to the Stadium more than 2 hours early to see batting practice and the whole deal. When I got to the box office, I found out that the game was a complete sellout. I had to scalp a pair of tickets to get in. By 99, despite continued success and a roster filled with All-Stars and future HOFers, you could walk up to a first round playoff game and get great seats.

We've been season ticket holders for five years now and the Spurs have provided plenty of thrills. Twelve years after his first baseball game, my 18 yr son and I witnessed game 7 of the NBA Finals. Regardless of what changes must inevitably come, we'll be going to Spurs games for many more years.
