Is there another way the city could honor Cesar Chavez without having to rename a street?

Why does it have to be a street?

I understand why those in favor of it want it to be Commerce St., but can there be a compromise?

In otherwords, the actual name of the street doesn't change.

Yeah, but it was only partially on Commerce, not all of the street.

I think the proponents want a complete re-naming of Commerce.

San Antonio City Councilman and mayoral candidate Julian Castro not only supports the renaming of 14.8 miles, 108 block long Commerce Street to Cesar E. Chavez Avenue, he wants you to pay for it, 1200 WOAI news reported today.

The proposal to rename the city's longest street for the United Farm Workers leader who died in 1993 surfaced earlier this month, and so far, reaction has been cool. But Castro, who is the front runner in the race for mayor, says he's all in favor of it, and says taxpayers should foot the bill.

"I think the city should be prepared to offer some resources to defray the costs of changing letterhead and helping with the other costs associated with changing the name of the street," Castro told 1200 WOAI's Bud Little.

Castro says Commerce Street is the 'appropriate' street to name for Chavez, because it runs through the city's Farmer's Market.

Fellow mayoral candidates Phil Hardberger and Carroll Schubert say they support renaming a street to honor Chavez, but the agree that Commerce Street should not be the street that is renamed.

Meanwhile, the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce is conducting a comprehensive survey of the businesses along Commerce Street to determine their feelings about the name change.

"The Chamber's Central Area Business Council wants to know what the business owners and managers along Commerce Street think about this proposal," said Chris Williams of Morgan Stanley, chairman of the council.

The Chamber conducted a similar survey in the controversy last year over the proposed renaming of Durango Boulevard for the late U.S. District Judge Hipolito F. Garcia.

Yes! Yes! Let's further confuse the traveller! 1604 is also something else - some man's name; sections of I-10 are something else - some men's names. Years ago, when I first moved to San Antonio, I found myself on streets and roads that suddenly disappeared, only to re-appear several "blocks" to the east or west, or whatever was popular at the time.
Our city is screwball enough, when it comes to the disappearing streets, without the wholesale renaming of the only street that gets newcomers to their downtown destination.
I'm ambivalent about Chavez. Commerce Street is about the only non-Hispanic or Alamo related-named street in the downtown area. Can't we leave at least one avenue that recognizes that there are other nationalities (or minus-nationalities, since Commerce just reminds one of of commerce) in San Antonio?
Would I be wrong in reminding the Chavez lovers that there are hundreds of nationalities represented in San Antonio - all of them might want to have a street named after a particular ethnic hero. I would love to see a little by-way named after Robert Frost, just for the hell of it, but the chances of that are remote. But, I'm supposed to agree to 14.5 miles of street named after a guy who wasn't a particular hero in my life?

Probably because when hispanics vote in numbers, they are a strong loyal constiuency, especially in local as State politics. I have another Idea, how about renaming one of the Military Drives after Chavez since I can never get all of them right anyway? Or how about renaming West Ave. since it runs North and South?

I think the feeling is that even though most people realize that renaming Commerce is a bad idea, people who aren't hispanic are looked upon as being racist for suggesting that.
