View Full Version : Norton Antivirus Troubles

I am having trouble opening my word and excel files on my computer courtesy of my Norton Antivirus.

I had it before I came onto school campus, and my net works fine. But just yesterday I noticed it didn't let me open word or excel files, and it keeps giving me errors when it comes to Auto-Protect and updating my Virus Definitions.

I have Norton Internet Secrity, and it seems to let me update most stuff except for Anti-virus.

My school gave me a copy of it as well, and I tried to install that, but it won't let me for some reason.

And for some reason I can't REMOVE OR CHANGE my Norton Antivirus as it is, even when i follow the instructions.

Anyone know how I can fix this problem, or why it is occuring?

Thanks

Norton Antivirus is scumware itself. Do what you can to unistall it.

Search for a file on your computer called "Hly" and delete it. That file caused me to not be able to open msword/excel too. I deleted it and I've had no problems ever sice.

norton is a waste of money
it slows the computer down to much
avg is free you can pay for it and get texh support if you want
I have it put it on several computers and it works
norton is overrated

Well for now I just want to open and use word and excel before I change my Antivirus.

So I just do a computer search for "Hly" and delete it manually?

Will that mess up my windows registry?

Thanks

EDIT: I did the Windows search and typed in "Hly" but I can't seem to find it, how should I narrow my search? :cry

Hmmm... I guess wait for people to answer in this thread that know more about computers than me. I just found the file easily and deleted it manually.

Nikos, sounds like you have a virus. Check to see if your
antivirus program is disabled for no apparent reason. You may
have an "X" thru its icon in the notification area. That is next
to your time in the lower right hand of screen. But otherwise
you can normally right click the mouse on the antivirus in
the same area and see what it tells you. If it is disabled, try
downloading the latest update and then run a scan on your
system. There are virus's out there that will disable your
anti-virus. I don't use your anti-virus, but if you can't down
load the latest or it is disabled and you cant get it to work
contact the support for your anti-virus and describe the
problem. If you are running XP you might, just might, no
guarantee go back for a week or so on your restore and
restore on that point and see if you still have problem.
Wished I could be of more help.

you could do a online virus scan on norton website
it is free
it tells you where the virus is
then shoot it!

A guy here at my work has a problem opening word files by double clicking on them. Seems like it started after Windows XP SP2 was installed. Norton does work ok if config it right. I have had more people tell me how bad McAfee security suite is. I have also seen it screw up first hand with several different machines. Personally I avoid all of the "suite" style software. I use hardware for firewall protection.

The viruses I found courtesy of TREND MICRO were

BKDR SANDBOX.A (9 times) Non - Cleanable, located in my C:\\WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 folder

TROJ SMALL.CD
TROJ AGENT.BI
TROJ AGENT.AE (located in C:\\WINDOWS\polmx.exe)

All are supposedly non-cleanable.

How can I get around this problem, considering I can't uninstall my Norton through ADD/REMOVE nor install a new copy?

Also I turned my System Restore off a while ago so I don't really have it available for any recent time......

www.symantec.com/downloads/ (http://www.symantec.com/downloads/)

look under Virus Removal Tools
and see if that virus is there

if not just go to that file and delete it

might have to be in safe mode to do that

Sounds like that's more adware/spyware than a virus.

Couple of things...

Before you do anything double check that system restore is disabled. If not, this will be a never-ending cycle.

First, go to lavasoft and download adaware, run it. Might solve your problem. If it doesn't...
-----------------------------------------

Second, go here...

www.misec.net/trojanhunter/ (http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/)

It's an anti-trojan program. Give that a shot, it will delete trojans.

If neither of these work, post again, and we'll go from there.

Sounds like your viruses have corrupted your registry files. I can tell you what to do, but it's kinda squirrelly without me actually being there...

Go to Start - Go to Run ---type msconfig - click ok --

Go to Start-up tab at far right -- Uncheck every file that is in any way connected to Norton.

Now click the Auto-exec tab - hit the edit tab at the bottom to delete any mention of norton in your auto exec file.

Now do the same for the config.sys tab.

Click ok -- restart your computer.

This should restart your computer without Norton Initializing at start-up making it possible to either delete the norton files manually, which is kinda hairy, or reinstall the program and hope that this fixes the corrupt norton and registry files.

You may also need to reinstall Office to fix the word and Excel associations in your system registry.

Good luck. Hope this helps!
