Playing the matchup odds, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has opted to rest Tim Duncan during tonight's game against Sacramento.

It is the first night of a back-to-back that will take the Spurs to Golden State on Monday, and Popovich planned to sit Duncan in one of the two games. Sacramento made sense from a matchup standpoint.

"In the past, he's been a difference-maker against Golden State, so we're going to opt to use him in that game," Popovich said in his pre-game meeting with the media. "We're not going to play him in both. It's just not good for him."

Duncan has been struggling with soreness in his knees for more than a month, but in recent days had said the pain is showing signs of fading. He said he could have played against the Kings, but understood why Popovich wants to play it safe.

"They don't want be to play back-to-backs this late in the season," Duncan said. "We're just trying to be smart about it and do things the right way."

1. Gooden has always been a terrible defender, nothing new there;

2. Some guys know how to set a screen (eg. Kurt, Tim), some don't (eg. Gooden).

He can score in the post, and rebound when he feels like it, but otherwise Gooden is a very average player. I'd take KT over Gooden any day of he week.

Hawes is horrible, sorry Ruff..he's one of the softest big men in the NBA..he's a horrible 1 on 1 defensive player, he can't produce consistent inside..his only positives is that he has range, and he's a good passer..

Hawes is soft, sure, but he's not horrible. He can shoot, and he has some low-post moves. Is he ever going to be a tough-nosed defender, probably not, but he could be another Brad Miller in a few years.

OTOH, Thompson is not soft and might turn out to be an Al Horford clone.

Man, when our old guys play against young teams the age really starts to show. They look like they are walking with walkers out there. IT might have been nice had Pop kept and played Malik, Hill, and Pops. WE could have used their young energy,the current spurs look just completely out of gas.
