I hope that Pop will see thru his stubbornness and not have mason play point and have Hill come in so that he can guard J.J. Barrea. Knowing Pop though and what he has done we will probably see mason guarding him and that might be a terrible match up.

Respectfully disagree. Josh Howard's health is in question and the Spurs have multiple options for Terry. The Spurs will have to work, but we all know in close games, especially in close playoff games, the Spurs have a mental toughness the mavs just don't have. The series won't be a cakewalk, but that doesn't mean the Spurs can't finish the mavs off in 5. Next round, Spurs have problems. But they can handle the mavs.

Crookshanks
04-15-2009, 10:18 PM
I'm watching NBA tv - and Steve Smith says he gives the edge to the Spurs. Of course, he's a former Spur - but he still made some good points.

He said it will be an easier series for Duncan because he won't get beat up so bad and he won't have a real hard defensive assignment because Dampier isn't that much of an offensive threat. He also said the Spurs have eliminated the Mavs so many times that the psychological edge goes to the Spurs.

I really like the fact that we won't have long travel times or have to change time zones during this 1st round.

This is absolutely right, but that's also somewhat mitigated by the fact that the Spurs aren't as good as they were back then, either. Plus, no Manu.

Overall, I think we'll find that the matchup overall is just as contentious. The Spurs may win it this time around, but I think the teams relative to each other are fairly close to 2006.

Both teams are very different now. Manu is out, Harris is gone, Diop is not there to defend Duncan, etc. Tony is also better this year than he has ever been. Josh Howard has to show up...so does Roger Mason.

Lots of intangibles. It's the kind of series that could easily go 7 games but at the same time it could go 5 if we are hitting on all 8 cylinders.

I think I will go with the sexy pick and say Spurs in 6. Duncan looks ready...and that's all I need to know.

I believe this is one of those series that could go either way.....sure, the teams aren't the same from the last time they met in 2006,but this is a rivalry series, so you have to throw regular season matchups/past matchups out the window.

Here's what I think:

Bowen does indeed need to spend more time defending Terry. Dirk's going to get his points and Terry can get awful hot quickly.
No more Devin Harris + No post options on the Mavs = Parker is going to have a field day in the lane.
Erick Dampier can't guard Tim Duncan...even on less than 100% Duncan still has the edge in this matchup.
Barea could be the X-factor for the Mavs in a game or two....I think Gooden is going to have a big role in this series, and I believe Mase and Finley still have some buzzer-beaters in them.
This is going to be an intriguing first round matchup, I really don't think there will be any blowouts......

Howard's missed over 30 games this year but is relatively healthy now. Personally, I don't think he's as good a player as he was in 2006. But he'll still give the Spurs some problems, though perhaps not as many as before.

Looks like Denver will lose to Portland now spurm fans lament losing to the Nuggets in that game in which popazit decided to rest his starters, the Spurms and Nuggets would have finished tied with the spurms holding the tiebreaker and possibly the second seed by virtue of better conference record.

To all the overconfident fans, you realize the Spurs are playing without Manu in the playoffs, right.

Mavs have all their players and are playing really well now.

It will be a very difficult serie. I hope Tim will be healthy enough to beat the Mavs.

Looks like Denver will lose to Portland now spurm fans lament losing to the Nuggets in that game in which popazit decided to rest his starters, the Spurms and Nuggets would have finished tied with the spurms holding the tiebreaker and possibly the second seed by virtue of better conference record.

If we ended up tied with Denver because we lost that game, wouldn't we have ended up ahead of Denver if we had won that game?

I'd like to see some of Udoka on Howard. I think he may be the best option for him defensively.

Spurs in 5, but I am an optimist. Tony is going to torch them and we might even see the Jet get grounded by young George Hill! Defensive pressure and the Mavs will eventually crumble under pressure.

I think Howard is too quick for Udoka. If Howard is keyed in and killing the Mason/Finley wing combo, Bowen IMO is the only Spur who can slow him down.

This is what I SAID BEFORE tonight Spurs are NOT DONE and they WILL NOT go down easy last night showed why ...
1. Duncan is the best all around bigman in the West and I would still take him over Dhoward for a BIG game ...
2. Parker is a top 3-4 PG depending on how you view Chauncey ...and can match Paul and Dwill scoring wise ...
3. POP is at worst the 2nd best coach in the NBA (i think he is 1st but Phil is good as well)
4. They surround Duncan with shooters
5. Gooden gives then much better scoring than Oberto or Thomas
6. Bowen can still give an offensive scorer fits ...
7. Finley and Mason can hit clutch shots

If SA controls tempo, milks duncan inside presence and gets Parker in the open court I think they can beat DALLAS

For DallaS TO WIN
1. they need to steal Game 1 or 2 on the road
2. Dirk needs to treat Gooden, Thomas etc the way they he did Scola ...
3. Terry needs to stay hot focused and bring energy
4. Kidd must be aggressive ...
5. Howard needs to play the 4th the way he plays the 1st
6.Damp must at least make Duncan work ...Hollins has to give them minutes on TD
7. Unleash Bass on them!!
8. Avoid a game 7 vs. Timmy at the AT&T

Should be a great series. While some might not have wanted the Mavs. I think it's great for both teams and fans. There are a few teams the Spurs (and Mavs) don't have any problem getting up for. I don't think either team will have any problem getting up for this match up. Although some of the players have changed there is still a lot of recent history in this rivalry. Should be a very intense and entertaining series. Spurs in 6 or 7.

Wasn't even so much that he could stay in front of Parker, but Harris carved our defense up. I remember when Pop wouldn't put Rasho on the floor that series because he didn't like the matchup, and Harris just ran a layup drill on us.

JJ Barea is streaky (I remember he almost carried the Mavs to victory over us during one of the earlier games this season), so he could be a Harris-lite at best. If we can knock down open shots (a big "if" sometimes), I think we should score enough to move on relatively quick.

There is no fucking way we lose to this mavericks team, even without ginobili. Those of you who are afraid of this matchup are twofaced cowards and need to wake up to reality.

The best mavs team of all time still could not beat us without ginobili giving them the game.
Theres no ginobili to fuck us over this time. Ginobili historically sucks shit against the mavs.

Roger Mason will average 18 points a game this series and enter the second round more confident than he's ever been in his entire career.

Guys...JJ fucking Barea is their 4th leading scorer.

Harris not only knew how to drive, but he knew how to draw contact and finish also. It gave them and-1's and got our bigs in foul trouble. JJ Barea is nowhere near that kind of finisher at the rim.

Hope the Jazz make LAL work more than the Mavs make the Spurs work. IMO, that is one of the keys for the 2nd round. Spurs can't let LA get a nice rest before. Also, Timmy/Gooden/KT/Bonner must be > Bynum/Gasol/Odom. Idk if they can do that.:depressed

And Tony/Mason must > Fish/Kobe. If TP forgets that he doesn't like driving against the Lakers, that should work. As long as Timmy plays like he did to start this season, GSG!!!

That was one game's statistical offensive production. As someone said earlier, he absolutely carved up our defense which was already spread thin in that series. He wasn't the end-all-be-all, but he did his part.

With lots of help from the refs and a really crappy foul in the last seconds of game 7.

I'm going to come out of the woodwork just to respond to this one comment. There was a total of a combined TWENTY-FOUR more personal fouls called against the Mavs than the Spurs in 2006 Games 5-7.

Geez, what a sense of entitlement.

Ok, I realize there are Spurs and mavs fans outside the state and country, but if you're a Texan, you've gotta love this matchup and hope your team takes it personally. I go to Texas A&M, and it's un-freaking-believable how many stupid mavs "2006 Conference Champions" t-shirts I see on campus. Unbelievable and SAD. I have NEVER purchased division or conference championship gear. Unless you're team wins it all, it's just a reminder of what might have been with your franchise. Spurs are one of only two teams to go to the Finals multiple times and never lose--that's something to be proud of right there.

Since jj barea (or however you spell the little biotch's name) got his little wish to come to our side of I-35, I hope Timmy, Tony, and the rest of the Silver and Black kick the mavs' faces in for them. We still haven't forgotten 2006--Finley can attest to that. Here's to the Spurs reasserting themselves as the true Pride of the Lone Star State!

BEAT THE HELL OUTTA dallas! GO SPURS GO!

Mavs vs. Spurs. Time to get some revenge for 2006. Both teams are different this time around...but still a rivalry none the less. This time there will be no Devin Harris to run wild on the Spurs and stay in front of TP...there will be no Diop to body up Timmy and guard the hell outta him. Yes we are missing Manu...but with TP, TD, Bowen, Mason, Fin who you know wants to beat the shit outta Dallas after 06'...we should be poised to take Dallas down. Spurs in 6. Believe. :flag:

The Mavs were the one first round opponent I wanted the Spurs to avoid at all costs :td

For the record, Finley deserves major props for his two game-winning shots. Without both, the Spurs would be entering the Rose Garden where the Blazers would probably be able to run the Spurs out of the gym.

so what ? the mavs are the worst opponent but Finley deserves major props to make us avoid the blazers who would have destroyed us ? :downspin:

for me, it looks like you really don't believe in our team this year, whatever the opponent is. You made a "believe" thread about how the Spurs could win it all this year but basically all your others posts are saying we don't have any chance.
