I think it was about fiscal and constitutional conservatives showing disenfranchisement with the direction of its own national leadership....exactly the type of grass-root organization that brought Obama to power over Clinton and McCain with his anti-war/anti-Bush message...but it may take another round of congressional losses in 10' and 12' before they really start to get the message...

I think it's about Limbaugh fans standing around being idiots. The people you see in the crowds don't even look like politically savvy people. They're American idiots who catch on to buzz words that they don't understand.

Also, there is a bunch of them that have Obama-hate signs... that has nothing to do with fiscal conservatism, even if it was true that the last president we had wasn't big on spending (And if you didn't know, that's not true.)

These tea-party goers are your typical southern backwoods and your typical cowboys. A bunch of poor people who are stupid to believe that Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity really give a damn about them not having any money. They are told they should hate Obama so they do. Even though he's not raising taxes on the poor, you still see these fucking retards standing outside with signs depicting the president attacking Uncle Sam.

It's just sad.

All I know is that Obama isn't raising taxes on poor people but all of these uneducated folks are protesting against his tax policy.

A bunch of poor, uneducated people are crying about CEOs and other rich white-collar types and TV/Movie stars and athletes and popular talk show hosts will have to pay more taxes because some fat-ass with a radio show told them they should. He said this black guy was going to come in and take their guns and all their money going 20 generations into the future; and they believe him. So now, we get the tea-parties.

The ability to prey on the emotions of the fearful and the stupid, also known as the Republican base (excluding real fiscal conservatives, if they exist), was always the great strength of the right-wing leadership.

TDF - you are just too stupid to deal with. Your elitism, snobbery and utter disdain for anything having to do with conservatives is really pitiful to behold. Are you trying to convince us, or trying to make yourself feel better?

The people at these tea parties were not poor, uneducated southern hicks. They were people from all walks of life, rich and not so rich, highly educated and just those with a high-school education. These tea parties were held all across America - they even had a pretty big one in NYC.

It wasn't just about taxes, you idiot, it was about the Federal Government getting too big and intruding on our lives in ways our forefathers never intended. One of the speakers at the Fort Worth tea party was a small business owner. He said to think back to 1984 - then he said:

In 1984, who would've ever thought, in this country, that the Federal Government would
- take over banks
- have a stake in private enterprises
- fire the CEO of a major company
- dictate the pay of executives
- dictate what kind of cars we can drive
- dictate what kind of lightbulbs we can use
- dictate where we can set our thermostat
- dictate where and when we can pray
- dictate the terms of your mortgage

And that, my clueless friend, is why people are angry and fed up! Only time will tell if this movement continues to grow and have any impact on the 2010 elections.

What I find rather interesting is WHY you libs are so bent out of shape over these tea parties - and why you find it so necessary to denigrate the participants. The fact that you guys are so uptight and bothered by them gives us conservatives much satisfaction!

There's hardly any cause for me to be concerned with the selectivity of your take, micca: everybody else reads and remembers and will form his own impression, based partly on the impressions already made, and partly on what's actually there in the thread.

In 1984, who would've ever thought, in this country, that the Federal Government would

- take over banks

The government has taken over businesses before.

- have a stake in private enterprises

It's happened before.

- fire the CEO of a major company

They didn't; they asked him to resign. He did.

- dictate the pay of executives

Doesn't the government dictate the pay of President? Congress? Military? Government employees?

- dictate what kind of cars we can drive

you're not allowed to buy a certain car? Really? Which one?

- dictate what kind of lightbulbs we can use

Which lightbulbs?

- dictate where we can set our thermostat

Now you're just kidding right?

- dictate where and when we can pray

Really? They've got a set regimen? Or do you mean, dictate where and when public officials can use prayer in a public setting?

- dictate the terms of your mortgage

This is the first one to have SOME validity, albeit in a very stretched way. They can change some terms, not the whole thing.

And that, my clueless friend, is why people are angry and fed up! Only time will tell if this movement continues to grow and have any impact on the 2010 elections.

The post RTC rules governing "prompt action" by the FDIC in the face of any situation posing *any significant adverse impact* on the US taxpayer, require the FDIC to take over insolvent banks, and were completely ignored.

There wasn't any transparency, so the rules weren't followed. There still isn't any, and now the FDIC is back-stopping the PIFP's with no-recourse loans. They're supposed to insure our fucking deposits.

How will they ever do that when the highly complex PIFP financial scheme loses money the way it was designed to?

One thing I did notice which I thought was peculiar was that 95% of the group protesting was white. Not that there is anything wrong with that but in a city with as many different ethnic groups like San Diego you'd think there would be a bigger representation of the cities demographics. A main reason repubs are fading into obscurity. They need to become much more inclusionary if they ever wanna be relevant again. Less taxes as the only thing your party can agree on will only take you so far.

Well alot of their major platforms can be considered not inclusive and many times has racial overtones. Illegal immigration, the war in Iraq, gay marriage, etc. Not that those stances are necessarily racist or non inclusive just that the way they are sold to the public by other republican voters and sometimes even their elected officials has lots of ugly messages. Mexicans are criminals and are here to steal your jobs and suck up free services, Muslims are terrorists, and so on. The republican party does not come across as inclusive at all. I think they are making a big effort to change this view, but they still have lots of work to do.

pretty obvious what is going on

Republicans are playing people like puppets to try and smear this administration and regain all the lost ground of the bush years

these tea parties probably were initially set up by organizations like that. then the rest of the sheep followed, but for different, noble reasons.

i find all of this funny because Obama has only been in office for like 3 months and the Democrats have only been in control of the Senate for 2 years. republicans were in the white house for the past 8 years and started this whole mess we have now. and republicans ran congress since 1992.

I'd venture to say that about 15 or 20% of all the people present went just to see what was going on and didn't participate at all.

Take San Antonio for example. Lots of tourists around the Alamo... some see a big ass crowd, lots of cameras, and hear some familiar names are gonna speak... so they hang around. Shit.. it's Alamo Plaza... there were probably gonna be a few thousand people in that general area just walking around anyway.

I went because it was a 15 minute walk from where I go to school and I wanted to see what it was gonna be like.

Indeed. That's why most partisan bickering is ultimately about divergent political philosophies instead of different political realities.

I think the second vote on the original bailout in the House was most instructive, as it served to provide a list of who was a member of the 'DC party' and who was not. Truly conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats have more in common than they might think.

51% View Tea Parties Favorably, Political Class Strongly Disagrees
Monday, April 20, 2009

Fifty-one percent (51%) of Americans have a favorable view of the “tea parties” held nationwide last week, including 32% who say their view of the events is Very favorable.

Thirty-three percent (33%) hold an unfavorable opinion of the tea parties according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Fifteen percent (15%) are not sure.

While half the nation has a favorable opinion of last Wednesday’s events, the nation’s Political Class has a much dimmer view—just 13% of the political elite offered even a somewhat favorable assessment while 81% said the opposite. Among the Political Class, not a single survey respondent said they had a Very Favorable opinion of the events while 60% shared a Very Unfavorable assessment. Why am I not surprised at this

One-in-four adults (25%) say they personally know someone who attended a tea party protest. That figure includes just one percent (1%) of those in the Political Class.

David Axelrod, a top adviser to President Obama, on Sunday characterized the protests in dozens of cities on the day federal income taxes are due as potentially “unhealthy.”

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Americans say they followed recent new stories about the tea party protests, including 32% who followed Very Closely. Forty-one percent (41%) say they didn’t follow the reports.

Republicans were far more interested in the protests than others. Seventy-six percent (76%) of Republicans followed news reports, with 50% following Very Closely. By comparison, just 47% of Democrats and 50% of adults not affiliated with either major party say they followed the reports at least somewhat closely.

Just 32% of the Political Class was following along. Among those with populist, or Mainstream, views, 68% were paying attention.

While 83% of Republicans and a plurality (49%) of unaffiliated Americans have a favorable view of the tea party protests, only 28% of Democrats say the same.

The Political Class and Mainstream classifications are determined by the answers to three questions measuring general attitudes about government.

Most Americans trust the judgment of the public more than political leaders, view the federal government as a special interest group and believe that big business and big government work together against the interests of investors and consumers. Only seven percent (7%) share the opposite view and can be considered part of the Political Class.

On many issues, there is a bigger gap between the Political Class and Mainstream Americans than between Mainstream Republicans and Mainstream Democrats. That was true on the tea parties, but Mainstream Republicans do express a more positive view of the protests than Mainstream Democrats. Still, a majority (54%) of Mainstream Democrats had a favorable opinion of the tea parties. But wait, I thought this was a right-wing extremist event

I have a favorable opinion of the initial grass roots idea, but I disapprove of their selling themselves out so eagerly to Glenn Beck and Rick Perry. I've never seen folks let themselves be used so willingly. No wonder it's easy to tax them.

It was a mixture of anti-Tax/Large government, anti-Obama, and anti-Democrat sentiment.

The idea was noble, but it got co-opted by crazies who just wanted to bitch.

Taxes are getting borderline out of control (not talking about just income tax).

I have to disagree with the noble part. The tea party protests around the country were anything but. They were mostly meetings or redneck morons protesting a black President, gun control legislation and any kind of taxes they think are unfair. No matter how fair they might actually be. The "states rights" tirade by moronic Texas governor Perry echoed the sentiments of the fools at the meetings also. They are visceral feelings of rascism, bigotry and intolerance. You know, the way most republicans feel.

Republicans are racists yet a Republican president worked his ass off to end slavery. And there was a very popular president who was a Democrat that put Japanese-Americans in internment camps to protect America. Republicans are the racists. Democrats are never racist.

Not sure I agree with your qualification, PP. Southern Dems were a solid bloc against civil rights, and a bigger proportion of Republicans than Dems actually voted for it.

The House version:

Democratic Party: 152-96 (61%-39%)
Republican Party: 138-34 (80%-20%)

The Senate version:[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Rights_Act_of_1964#cite_note-King-8)

Democratic Party: 46-21 (69%-31%)
Republican Party: 27-6 (82%-18%)

The Senate version, voted on by the House:[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Rights_Act_of_1964#cite_note-King-8)

Democratic Party: 153-91 (63%-37%)
Republican Party: 136-35 (80%-20%)

That's probably because those Democrats never claimed to have a complete, unbroken historical legacy.

I hope they never thought they were anything but a liberal political movement, only concerned about power...

After all, MoveOn is effectively owned by George Soros (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_soros).

George Soros (pronounced /ˈsɔroʊs/ or /ˈsɔrəs/, Hungarian IPA: [ˈʃoroʃ]) (born August 12, 1930, in Budapest, Hungary, as György Schwartz) is an American currency speculator, stock investor, businessman, philanthropist, and political activist.

I wonder how much his wealth is growing under there political cause problems we have?
