The Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs were so dominant three years ago that they practically forced the NBA to change how playoff teams are stacked.

Three years later, the Spurs and Mavericks have ceded that superiority.

Tim Duncan and the Spurs are the third seed, but were a Michael Finley buzzer-beater this week from dropping to fifth and starting the playoffs on the road. Dirk Nowitzki and Dallas are seeded sixth, and had to win seven of the last nine to get there.

In the Western Conference, it’s now the Los Angeles Lakers and everyone else.

“But we think we’re still up there,” said Duncan, embarking on his 12 consecutive postseason. “We still think we have a chance.”

So do the Mavericks, who renew their playoff rivalry with the Spurs starting Saturday in San Antonio. But unlike in 2006, it won’t be the same meeting of 60-win titans who played to a thrilling seven-game series in the West semifinals. The Mavs prevailed, and went on to the NBA finals before losing to Miami.

Because of that semifinals series, the NBA changed its playoff rules the next season so that the teams with the best records wouldn’t meet until the conference finals. Many felt robbed the Spurs and Mavericks, who weren’t seeded Nos. 1 and 2 because they came from the same division, had squared off so prematurely that year.

But these days, Mavericks guard Jason Terry can’t seem to turn on his TV without being reminded of the general consensus of where Dallas is now in the pecking order.

“It feels disrespectful when you watch these shows, TNT, ESPN, and they’re talking, ‘Walk through the Mavericks, that’s who you want to play,”’ Terry said. “OK. We’ll see if that’s who you want to play.”

Dallas has been ousted in the first round in each of the last two seasons. The Spurs rebounded to win their fourth NBA title in 2007, then lost to the Lakers in the conference finals a year ago.

Both teams have four players remaining from their memorable 2006 showdown, most of whom are core players. The Spurs have Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Bruce Bowen. Still around in Dallas are Nowitzki, Terry, Josh Howard and Erik Dampier.

The Spurs will be without Giniboli, who will sit the playoffs with a stress fracture in his right ankle. That alone has many writing off San Antonio’s chances of preserving its streak of NBA titles in the last few odd-number years (’03, ’05 and ’07).

Spurs newcomer Drew Gooden says the Spurs are being overlooked and Mavs point guard Jason Kidd says no one is talking about Dallas. But both are talking about the other like it’s 2006.

“Sometimes as you get older you can become smarter,” Kidd said of the aging Spurs. “Being smarter, with the talent they have, they can be just as dangerous as they’ve been in the past. They have four championships, they understand what it takes to win.”

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said the Mavericks were one of the NBA’s best teams down the stretch.

“They’re playing almost better than anybody in the league, if you look at their play the last couple of weeks,” Popovich said. “They really pulled it together. Besides Cleveland, and maybe L.A., they’ve been playing better than anybody.”

The Spurs held onto the No. 3 seed—and avoided starting the playoffs on the road for the first time in 12 years—after ending the season on a four-game winning streak that followed a bumpy stretch for San Antonio. Duncan’s ailing knee has been a source of constant worry for San Antonio, but he said Friday he’s settled into a routine of rest that’s allowed him to get his legs back.

Among the games Duncan sat out this season because of his knee was the Spurs’ blowout win against Dallas in February. San Antonio was missing Ginobili then, too, and a week later Dallas lost on the road to Oklahoma City, which led Mark Cuban to call out his underachieving team and threaten to shake up his roster.

The next game, the Mavs beat the Spurs to even the series at 2-2 in their final meeting.

“I don’t know if it’s the matchup we wanted, it’s the matchup we got by moving up and playing well over the last couple weeks,” Nowitzki said. “Our confidence is as high as it’s been all season.”

Notes

Mavs:

18 The Mavericks closed the regular season winning five of six to wrap up the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference. ... G Jason Kidd registered a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists.

Spurs:

The Spurs sent G Marcus Williams back to the Austin Toros, their NBA D-League team, before the game. Williams appeared in just two games after being called up last week. ... Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he wouldn't mind the NBA modifying its rules about instant replay. San Antonio stole one in Sacramento this week on a winning 3-pointer by G-F Michael Finley with 1.3 seconds left, but the ball clearly didn't leave his hand in time. The play was not reviewable. "We've all been on both sides of calls that can change a game right at the end," Popovich said.

Texas showdown (http://sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=nba/scores/live/pv11490.htm)

(Sports Network) - The three-six matchup in the Western Conference quarterfinals is a Texas-sized showdown between San Antonio and Dallas with the opener slated for tonight in the Alamo City.

The Spurs were able to win the Southwest Division on the final day of the regular season thanks to a clutch three-pointer at the regulation buzzer from Michael Finley, then surging ahead in overtime to beat New Orleans.

Trying to win the NBA title for a fourth time in seven years, San Antonio guard Tony Parker is looking forward to the postseason again.

The Spurs though will be without a main cog, as star swingman Manu Ginobili is out due to a stress fracture in his leg. Meanwhile, All-Star forward Tim Duncan has struggled with his balky knees for most of the second half of the regular season.

"We've had a lot of injuries. With Manu (Ginobili) being out half the season, it was a tough season," said Parker. "There were a lot of ups and downs but at the end of the day we got that third seed and that's what we wanted."

The Spurs are facing a familiar foe in the sixth-seeded Mavericks. The division rivals will be meeting in the playoffs for the fourth time since 2001, with the Spurs holding a 2-1 lead in the three previous meetings, although Dallas won the most recent series, a seven-game thriller in 2006.

The Mavs surged to the sixth seed following a home win over Houston on the final night of the regular season and are now three years removed from their NBA Finals collapse against the Miami Heat.

It's been a steady if not precipitous decline for Mark Cuban's franchise since bowing to Miami. The following year, the team sprinted to the finish line with 67 wins but were stunned in the first round by the Golden State Warriors. Last year, the New Orleans Hornets did the dirty work, bouncing Dallas in the first round yet again. Now the Mavs will hope to avoid a third consecutive first- round exit.

A late season spurt helped Dallas reach the 50-win plateau for the ninth consecutive season but its 50-32 mark is the worst record the team has posted in those nine seasons.

The clubs split the four-game seasons series this year with the highlight being the Spurs' 133-126 double-overtime victory in Dallas on December 9.

The Mavs have been a shaky road team this season, compiling just a 18-23 record away from "Big D." The Spurs, meanwhile, compiled a solid 28-13 mark in the Alamo City this season.

Here's the latest on the Dallas Mavericks:

David Moore, Dallas Morning News
The Mavericks do something this evening they haven't done in five years. Open a playoff series without Avery Johnson as their head coach.

Eddie Sefko, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
A strand of Jason Kidd's DNA has been weaved into the fabric of this team. Maybe more than just a strand.

The Daily Hurt, Bleacher Report
When it comes to the playoffs, the Dallas Mavericks know how to lose. There is a perception that winning is a habit. So to is losing, but victory is far more enjoyable. For the Mavericks, they don't appear to be able to beat their addiction.

Is it me, or did the original article go to great lengths to remind everyone that the Spurs and Mavs aren't the same teams they were in 2006? In a preview of the Mavs and Spurs, they still had to work in the Lakers somehow. Why was it even an issue to begin with?

If I wanted to read about the Lakers, I'd go check the Lakers/Jazz preview. If I'm a Spurs (actually I am) or Mavs fan, I'd be a little annoyed by this.
