Express-News

Key player: Tony Parker, Spurs

Minutes: 33

Points: 38

Assists: 8

First-quarter points: 19

Parker went to the basket for his first shot of the game, but he set up one of the best playoff games of his career by looking for perimeter shots early and often. Three of his first five baskets came on mid-range jumpers as he made five of his first six shots. By quarter’s end, Parker had made 9 of 11 shots and scored 19, giving the Spurs a !30-19 lead and the emotional lift they needed after their loss in Game 1. He missed only 6 of 22 shots and finished just three shy of his career playoff high.

Hidden stat: five

J.J. Barea, who created so many problems for the Spurs in Game 1 with penetrations that led to baskets or easy second-chance opportunities, got inside only five times in Game 2. The diminutive guard from Puerto Rico, who had 13 points and three assists Saturday, made only two of eight shots and scored only five points before re-entering the game with less than two minutes remaining as the Spurs defended the Mavericks’ pick-and-roll plays more aggressively.
