View Full Version : Ericka Dampier: I will punish Parker on Thursday

Singleton was getting abused by both Gooden and Oberto in garbage time last night. You think he has a chance against a HOF?
No wonder you're a Mav fan.
Which is why i would play Hollins and Bass before i would play Singleton. And you HOF is not exactly putting up HOF numbers. So yes.
Why do half of the Spurs fans out there have to be insulting and or arrogant? Why can't you just have a reasonable discussion, support your ideas or theories, cheer hard for your team and be a good fan.
Just because your team has won 4 titles does not mean you know everything or that you have the right to act like a jerk or just be plain rude and vulgar like some of the posters.
I consider myself a secondary Spurs fan. My wife is from San Antonio and there is a good chance we will move back there someday. But man half of you guys give the other half a bad name.

The league will now be ready for a flagrant foul call. Probably an automatic flagrant two since it's premeditated.
Nice going, Damp.
My exact thoughts when i heard about this.. The refs will have their eyes on him and all the Mavs, ready to blow the whistle and lay the smackdown on any nasty business with Tony coming to the lane. A normal flagrant 1, will become a 2 and ejections will happen.. The only ones who are gonna be timid are Damp and the Mavs in game 3, in those situations..

Dampier was just playing to the Mavs' fanbase, who collectively wonders why opposing players cannot be knocked to the floor with impunity just like on Fall Saturdays and Sundays.

Yes i watched every game. And i have seen enough of Hollins and Singleton to know that those 2 guys combined with Bass would do a better job than Damp.
I am not the only one here in Dallas screaming play Hollins and or Singleton more and Damp less.
Singleton is a lot like Diop, strong quick, good shot blocker and decent defender but not a real scoring threat.
Hollins is an ex high jumper. He is long and VERY athletic. He will dunk from anywhere. He is also very quick and very long. If he was heavier he would be a starting center right now. He is about 7 foot and 235. But man he can jump.
I would much rather see those 3 guys playing 10-20 minutes each at center and Bass picking up 10 minutes at the 4 while Dirk rests.
LMAO..you mean those guys who got garbage time last night? Come on...Damp is the only one on that roster who can guard Duncan..period. You take him off the floor and you'll lose by MORE than 21.

Dampier vows to put Parker on his back (UPDATED) (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/04/dampier-vows-to.html#more)
By Jeff McDonald
The Dallas Mavericks tried everything they could to deal with Tony Parker in Game 2.
They threw every type of defense, as many as five different players and the kitchen sink at him.
Parker had a 38-point field day anyway.
Dallas forward Erick Dampier believes he has found the solution to the Mavericks' Parker problem entering Game 3.
"Every time he drives the lane, we have to put him on his back," Dampier told the Dallas Morning News. "The first foul has to tell him he's in for a long night. My first foul Thursday night is going to put him on his back. I guarantee it."
No telling how such comments might go over with the NBA office. We'll see if he backs up his called shot Thursday.
Before the playoffs began, Parker said he was prepared to take such a pounding from like-minded opponents.
"I'm used to it," Parker said. "It's no different for me. I'm still going to try to penetrate and be aggressive. I'm definitely going to be on the ground, but I'll get up."
UPDATE: Not surprisingly, it appears Dampier has set himself for extra scrutiny in Game 3. An NBA official says the league is aware of Dampier's comments, and will be monitoring his behavior in Thursday's game.

When Parker is within five feet of Dampier, he should use the move that gets Dirk a whistle every time against the Spurs: trip yourself, pretend to role your ankle, fall into the shot blocker and throw the ball at the bottom of the rim.

Parker has to stand up with an indignant angry look on his face and yell something at the officials in German. That seems to work as well.

Singleton is an undersized big who makes up for it by being ultra athletic. Diop is a seven-footer with one of the largest wingspans in NBA history who isn't athletic.

04-21-2009, 05:28 PM
that's the first thing I thought..Dampier is a fucking idiot..whatever he does now, even if it's just a questionable foul, it's going to be a flagrant..
this is what soft, pussy teams do..they announce it to the media..they don't know how to throw subtle shots..Dampier is going to pick up a flagrant or an ejection for this, because he's out of his element..
you also don't do this against a team with Bruce Bowen or Kurt Thomas..these guys know how to throw shots without getting noticed, especially Bowen..if Dampier touches Parker, you can bet that Bowen and Thomas will be throwing cheap shots at Dirk all game, and the refs won't catch it a lot of the time, especially if it's Bowen..Bruce is an artist when it comes to that..
if I'm a Mavs player, I'm going to be scared of a Kurt Thomas pick every time down..he's going to flatten somebody..

HarlemHeat37
04-21-2009, 05:35 PM
talking about it is honestly one of the main things you see with a pussy team..
Dampier doesn't wanna do anything..he doesn't wanna commit anything..he's hoping that Parker will be scared to come in the lane because of Dampier's words..that's the approach of a pussy..
this is just a lose-lose situation for Dampier..Parker isn't scared of anybody on the court, so it's not going to stop him..if Dampier has the balls to do something, he'll end up getting a flagrant or an ejection..
just a stupid move by a franchise that doesn't know how to do anything correctly..

Here's the ESPN version of the story Duncan228 posted:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4087427
The NBA has commenced a review of Dallas Mavericks center Erick Dampier's postgame comments Monday in San Antonio that could result in an official penalty from the league office -- most likely in the form of a fine -- before Thursday's Game 3.
NBA spokesman Tim Frank confirmed Tuesday night that Dampier will be interviewed by league security officials about his statements after vowing to put San Antonio's Tony Parker "on his back" with his first foul in Game 3.
Parker shredded Dallas' defense for 38 points Monday night to spark San Antonio to a 105-84 triumph that evened the longstanding Texas rivals' first-round series at 1-1.
"Parker got into the teeth of our defense and caused problems," Dampier told The Dallas Morning News after the game. "Every time he drives the lane, we have to put him on his back. The first foul has to tell him he's in for a long night. My first foul Thursday night is going to put him on his back. I guarantee it."
Even if the 6-11, 265-pound center avoids further sanction from the league for his "guarantee," Dampier has potentially compromised the Mavericks' efforts to contain Parker and Tim Duncan, almost certainly inviting closer scrutiny from the referees who will be working Thursday night when the series shifts to Dallas. Dampier's strong play in Game 1 (10 points, 11 rebounds) against Duncan helped the Mavericks steal the series opener on the road.
Six of Parker's 16 baskets Monday were layups, including four alone in a 19-point first quarter.
Both teams used Tuesday as an off day from the practice court as well as the media. Spurs officials declined ESPN.com's request for a reaction to Dampier's statements and neither Mavericks owner Mark Cuban nor Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle could be immediately reached for comment.

Dude..no way in hell they allow it now. It's already out in the national media. It would be a complete and total mistake. NBA would be bashed all over the country. NBA has already come out and said they would be monitoring Dampier, and he might be fined just for saying it. If he so much as breathes on Parker wrong, he'll be suspended a game, bank on it. If you're gonna do something like this in the league, you just do it, you don't say you're gonna do it, because that crosses that line into premeditated.

Watch for the boomerang effect. The league will announce that Dampier didn't mean anything by the comment, and that it was just a statement made "in the heat of battle". No action necessary. But they will keep an eye on physical play between the two teams.
Then they will call ridiculous fouls on our bigs for making contact with Dampier. The inference will be that they had to clamp down on retaliation against Dampier for his comments.

I don't want to hear any excuses from Mavs fans.... I hope no suspension only fines. Anyways, Dampier is just all talk. He's just trying to intimidate Parker like what Lakers did back in 2006 Western Finals.

This would be a sweet time for Parker to have Manu or CP's flopping ability. The refs are looking for it... Sell it to them and get this chump sold up the river for the rest of the game.

Dampier "under review" for Parker comments (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/04/dampier-under-r.html)
By Jeff McDonald
Dallas center Erick Dampier is "under review" by the NBA for promising to put Tony Parker "on his back" in Game 3 of the teams' first-round series.
That could result in a fine for Dampier. It will almost certainly result in increased scrutiny.
A league official says the league will be monitoring Dampier's actions during Thursday's game.
After a Game 2 in which Parker zipped to 38 points in a Spurs victory, Dampier told the Dallas Morning News that he personally plans to ensure sure the French point guard has a rougher go in Game 3.
"The first foul has to tell him he's in for a long night," Dampier told the newspaper. "My first foul Thursday night is going to put him on his back. I guarantee it."
In other Spurs news ...
* A day after falling so hard on his backside he wound up spitting blood, Spurs forward Drew Gooden didn't feel it neccesary to show up for treatment Tuesday. By the looks of things, he should be good to go in Game 3.
* Give Bruce Bowen credit for shutting down J.J. Barea in Game 2. After taking over the fourth quarter of Game 1, Barea was a non-factor Monday. It's the second time this season Bowen has had success on Barea. Look for more of that matchup going forward.
* Dirk Nowitzki's numbers after two games: 10-of-29 from the field, a combined 33 points from the field, zero 3-pointers. Nowitzki finished the season with 25 consecutive 20-point games. The last time he went two playoff games without hitting 20 points was May 5 and 7, 2005 against Houston. Obviously, the Spurs -- and, yes, that means Matt Bonner, too -- deserve credit to making things difficult on Dirk.

You're not paying much attention, are you? How many Spurs players would be stupid enough to come out and say they were going to knock a guy to the floor and hurt them? We're not saying Erick is wrong to want to do it...we're saying he's stupid that he said it to the National Media. Though, if he did it, Ime Udoka would destroy his ass. Ask people who know about Udoka. Dude can scrap, and he DAMN sure would go after someone for taking out Tony.
Parker has shown an ability to get up from hits and keep playing his own game.
Erick Dampier saying this means nothing and won't cause Tony to change his game at all.
Udokafan05

Tony needs to drive directly at Dampier on first possesion, and when Dampier goes to "put him on his back", Tony needs to put a knee into Dampier's groin. Nothing could be better than watching Dampier flop around on the floor.

When the NBA reviews these comments, they should decide that Dampier's statements aren't punishable. Declaring that you're going to foul someone in an upcoming game isn't malicious, unless the actual foul itself is. It's a very stupid thing to say for obvious reasons (locker room material for Spurs, motivation for Parker, closer scrutiny from refs, etc.), but not something you fine a player for.
If he said he was going to hurt Parker, then there'd be something to review, but Dampier simply said that he's going to make life rough for Parker in the paint. Ericka should have done that in Game 2.

I'm sorry..if a guy specifically comes out and says one person is going to be knocked on their back in his first foul, that is intent to hurt. Don't be a dick just because you don't like the Spurs...that's just ignorant..you're letting your hatred blind you.

Whether Dampier was smart to say in public what we all know goes on in private is stupid.
I'm constantly amazed by Tony's ability to slither through cracks in the lane defense by teams that load up the space, seemingly without getting fouled.
But you have to take seriously the thought of a 7' 300 pound guy going headhunting. He doesn't have to be a martial arts guy. Just one swat of one of his arms could seriously hurt Parker. It's all part of the game, and I'm sure Tony accepts the risk, but I'm gonna be praying for him. Our season and our future depend on Parker.
Doesn't Parker end up on his back after every basket? Whether he gets contact or not?
This doesn't seem like much of a threat.

I doubt it. The way Parker plays, he faces that fear every game. All Dampier did was state something that Parker has come to expect. If he was younger, maybe, now I don't think so.

Parker: Dampier not my focus (http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/spurs/Parker_Dampier_not_my_focus.html)
Jeff McDonald
DALLAS — Tony Parker had no interest in escalating a war of words with Dallas center Erick Dampier.
Addressing Dampier's pledge to “put him on his back” in Game 3 of the teams' first-round series, Parker responded Wednesday by not really responding at all.
“I can't focus on that,” Parker said. “It's San Antonio against Dallas. We all know they're going to come back strong. They're going to play very physical.”
Parker slashed his way to 38 points in the Spurs' Game 2 victory, prompting Dampier to threaten the point guard with a hard foul the first time he ventures into the lane tonight. After a visit from NBA security, Dampier backed off his comments Wednesday, saying he had to intention of hurting Parker.
Given the nature of the Spurs' 105-84 triumph Monday, Parker's teammates say they weren't surprised to hear of Dampier's remarks.
“That's a team that had somebody score (38) points on them,” Roger Mason Jr. said. “Tony lives by getting in the paint. He'll get hit, he'll get up. Tony's a tough guy, and we all have his back.”
Parker has already taken one hard shot in the series, a Game 2 takedown courtesy of Jason Terry that earned the Dallas guard a Flagrant 1. Asked if the threat of bodily harm would be enough to keep Parker out of the lane in Game 3, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich chuckled.
“Have you seen Tony play for eight years?” Popovich said. “He's a tough kid.”
Speaking of tough: Spurs forward Drew Gooden says he's good to go for Game 3, two nights after a collision with Josh Howard left him nursing a sore right shoulder and spitting blood.
All Gooden needed was a nice, long soak in the hot tub.
“The hot tub was the best thing for it,” Gooden said. “After I got out of there, I felt a lot better. I haven't been spitting up blood since that night, so that's a good thing.”
Argentine role model: Acknowledging the report that Terry had been named winner of the NBA's Sixth Man Award, coach Rick Carlisle heaped high praise on Spurs guard Manu Ginobili, calling him the role model for great players willing to adapt for the good of their team.
While praising Terry's willingness to embrace the sixth man role, Carlisle pointed to Ginobili, who won last year's Sixth Man Award, as an example for all players.
“A lot of star caliber players would struggle with that,” Carlisle said. “Ginobili's been a guy the last two or three years who has embraced that and looked at it as a way to help his team. That's a great example for all guys in our league.”
Game 5 set: Game 5 of the series will tip off at 8:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on TNT.
