they should change the name of this award to the Blocks and Rebounds award.

all they do every year is give it to the guy (always a big) who gets alot of rebounds and blocked shots.

the reality is it is MUCH harder to be a perimeter defender, these guys get screwed every year. what a shame that Bowen will never win one, his defense of the league's top scorers year after year is FAR more impressive than a 7-foot freaky jumping athlete deflecting some 6-4 guy's shots now and then.

bowen is a 6-7 SF...hes not supposed to be a big rebounder. him and other great perimeter defenders do most of the dirty work and always get screwed on this shitty award.

In 2006-2007 when fans were clamoring for Bruce to win DPOY he only had 2.7 RPG in 30 MPG. Finley and Udoka even have better rebounding numbers than Bruce does. It is his one weakness as an all-around defensive player.

Look at Wade, he had 5.0 RPG and 1.3 blocks per game this season as a 6'4" G.

Nobody ever penalized Bowen on their ballot because of his low rebounding numbers, that's absurd. You can't possibly make the argument that the results would have been different if Bowen had averaged 6 rpg instead of 3-4. Voters look for the gaudy stats like 12 rpg or 3 bpg... or occasionally they'll be swayed by year-long hype and campaigning on behalf of a player without gaudy stats (like Garnett or Artest.)

Bowen lost to Ben Wallace's reputation and stats, Ron Artest's hype and Marcus Camby's stats.

And it didn't help him or Duncan they tended to split votes.
