CHICAGO (AP) — Derrick Rose is the NBA's rookie of the year after leading his hometown Bulls to the playoffs and restoring hope to a franchise in disarray.
Two people familiar with the award confirmed to The Associated Press that Rose is the winner. Both requested anonymity as the announcement was to be made later Wednesday.
A product of Chicago's South Side, the No. 1 overall draft pick ranked among the top rookies in most major categories and was the Eastern Conference's rookie of the month three times.
Rose matched Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's playoff scoring record for a debuting rookie with 36 points and 11 assists in an upset of defending champion Boston last Saturday. The two teams meet Thursday night with the series tied 1-1.
