By Jeff McDonald

DALLAS -- The referee assignments are out for Game 3 tonight. You better sit down for this, Spurs fans.

The crew will be headed by none other than Mr. Joey Crawford, the biggest villain in San Antonio since Santa Anna left town.

We will pause here, Spurs fans, while you utter your curse word of choice.

Crawford's rocky history with the Spurs has been well chronicled. This will be his first playoff game involving the Spurs since Game 4 of last year's Western Conference finals (aka "The Flux Capacitor Game"). That game ended when Crawford failed to call Derek Fisher's foul on Brent Barry at the final horn that ostensibly could have won the game for the Spurs.

The next day the league issued a statement that, whoops, somebody should have called blown a whistle.

Tonight's game will also be Crawford's first with the Spurs in Dallas since he ejected Tim Duncan from a regular-season contest in 2007 for laughing on the bench. The NBA deemed that do be an overreaction, banning Crawford from working that year's playoffs.

That said, Crawford could be a complete non-factor tonight. Nobody seems to remember the incident-free games he has worked involving the Spurs. Truth be told, many in the organization regard him as one of the better officials in the league.

But if Game 3 needed any more intrigue after Erick Dampier put Tony Parker on his hit list, Crawford's presence ought to provide it.

I was waiting for this article to come out. I cannot believe it took so long. It is an easy "story" line to write about. Ohhhhh the intrigue.

Incorrect. Crawford did the 2nd Spurs/Mavs game in Dallas this season -- on March 4.

I was at that game. Duncan was hacked all night and Bonner was out in five minutes with foul trouble. Frustrating to watch.

Doesn't matter. Why? Crawford better be pulling for us or his ass will be on a sling. (Because of all things previously stated)

I don't know what Crawford would have to do to make the league stop having him ref Spurs games (or any games, whatever it takes). He called to techs and ejected our star player in an important game for laughing on the bench, and then challenged him to a fight.

Then, he blew a playoff game against the Lakers for us; the NBA admitted as much. How many games does he have to destroy for us? If he took a swing at Duncan, would that be enough, or would he only receive a 'severe reprimand' and continue calling our games? Crawford is a joke, and as long as they keep insisting he ref our games, so is the NBA.

You don't even have to announce it, just don't have him ref any Spurs playoff games.

Maybe this intrigue will make the NBA and Crawford realize they need to keep it calm.

My prediction:

First Spurs play of the game Tony drives the lane, smacks into Dampier. Joey calls a foul... ejects Duncan...

followed by a Chris Paul helicopter flop, in which he gets up and complains to the other officials that he was fouled. The other officials have no choice but to give their own co worker a technical foul.
