Golden Girls Star Beatrice Arthur Dies

Beatrice Arthur, the larger-than-life actress who scored on Broadway as the original matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof before she went on to star in the groundbreaking '70s TV series Maude and, in the '80s, the beloved sitcom The Golden Girls, has died. She was 86.

Dan Watt, a spokesman for Arthur's family, told the Associated Press that the star had been suffering with cancer, though he did not specify what kind. She died peacefully at her Los Angeles home with her family by her side, he added, remembering her as "brilliant and witty woman."

Maude, which debuted on CBS in 1972 (and ran until 1978) was a spin-off of the hit All in the Family. As the liberal cousin of arch-conservative Archie Bunker's wife Edith, Maude wasn't afraid to broach such controversial (especially for TV at the time) topics as abortion and civil rights.

People look back now and do not realize that at the time both of her shows were quite the trailblazers. Maude was seen as so controversial and the women on Golden Girls got away with saying so much simply because they were older women. RIP

I didn't watch Golden Girls, but the best memory I have of her was the SNL skit "Food, Sex, or Cars" where contestants had to choose whether to eat the food, have sex with the girl, or drive the car

Bea Arthur, a circus peanut, or a Dodge Dart

:lol Great episode.

Of course, all true nerds know Bea Arthur's best work would be from the Star Wars Holiday Special: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVbCS8vg8m0
