Express-News

Key player: Josh Howard, Mavericks

Minutes: 35:49

Points: 28

Field-goal shooting: 7 of 14

3-point shooting: 3 of 6

Free-throw shooting: 11 of 13

Second-half points: 19

Rundown: With Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry, the Mavericks’ leading scorers in the regular season, combining to miss 19 of 26 shots and totaling only 22 points, it was Howard who stepped into the offensive breach for the Mavericks to counter the Spurs’ tandem of Tony Parker (43) and Tim Duncan (25). Howard had a great sense of timing, too. After the Spurs finished the first half with a flurry that turned a nine-point deficit into a four-point halftime lead, Howard scored 14 in the third period, giving the Mavericks another nine-point cushion to begin the fourth quarter.Ñ

Frozen moment: Ryan Hollins’ dunk

Dallas forward Ryan Hollins probably would have preferred that his moment of excess celebration after a putback dunk over the Spurs’ Tim Duncan had not been frozen in time by the referees, who called him for a taunting technical foul. The technical guaranteed his momentary loss of poise in a close game would be replayed on national TV. In the end, Hollins’ exuberance was something the Spurs could have used from their bench, which was outscored by the Mavericks 23-10.
