Carlesimo prefers whistle to headset
Given that TNT added P.J. Carlesimo to its NBA playoff game coverage, he would seem a candidate for a TV job next season.
But he says he'd rather not take one: "Given a choice, I'd prefer to be coaching. … But TV keeps you in the game."
Carlesimo, who'll work TNT's Philadelphia 76ers-Orlando Magic game Sunday, has been creative in staying in the game. He began coaching Seton Hall in 1982 — was NCAA coach of the year in 1989 — and coached various U.S. international squads, including as an assistant on the 1992 Olympic Dream Team.
He went to the NBA to coach the Portland Trail Blazers and then Golden State Warriors, where he was caught in a chokehold by Latrell Sprewell at a 1997 practice. Carlesimo says that incident "is the first thing that comes up with my name" — at least with people outside basketball — and "we'll always be linked." They've since talked, "but we've never had a sit-down about why it happened."
After being fired by Golden State in 1999, Carlesimo was an analyst on NBC's last two NBA seasons and then an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs before being hired to coach the Seattle SuperSonics last season. This season, after the team moved to Oklahoma City, he was fired again.
So he worked NCAA tournament radio games this spring before TNT's playoffs. Carlesimo doesn't expect there to be many NBA head coaching vacancies coming up and pretty much rules out returning to college, but he might become an NBA assistant. "All you do in the pros is basketball. For a basketball junkie, it's the ultimate."
