Full Name: Adrian Glenn "The Baby" Abrams, Jr. | G
Born: October 16, 1986
Height: 5-11
Weight: 161 lbs
College: Texas

Pros: Most prolific three point shooter in Big-12 history. Very quick release. Decent defender, has the work ethic to improve. Almost an automatic when he's open.

Cons: Very short, no slashing ability, limited ball handling skills.

This guy would be like a perfect combination of Steve Kerr and Jaque Vaughn backup PG, without the physical tools to be a rugged Pop-style defender, and with absolutely no NBA experience.
And honestly, I had to make this thread before Marcus did, or I'd kill myself.

Daniel Gibson has been able to carve out an NBA career and Abrams looks like more of an NBA player at this stage of his career.

I'm a huge A.J. Abrams fan, but I really don't want to see him on the Spurs. He's very much a chucker, and the Spurs system is all about taking the best shot on every possession. The tendency to go against this scheme is one of the reasons Michael Finley will always be loathed on some level by many Spurs fans.

If he's a solid point and can get Geroge Hill more PT at the SG position I'm all for it, but putting Vaughn in the scouting report does not bode well for him around these parts.

AJ took over many a game at the college level, to the point that teams focused their entire defense to stop him which effectively stopped Texas's offense.

I think that with the benefit of not being the focus of the defense he has the opportunity to be a very good shooter i the NBA, but his height and defense are worries. Plus we'd have to see how well he'd buy into the Spurs' system.

At worst, draft him in the 50s, put him with the Toros to raise their attendence, and see if he turns into a decent player.

The new Star Trek movie looks promising; it's got to be better than Cloverfield.

Now ask yourself this question:

If it was stupid, did you really "have to" post it?

With training camp only days away and the Spurs having few spots I wonder what is taking so long for these players like Gist and McClinton to get signed with either the Spurs or overseas.

In 08, Hairston was signed on September 30th.
In 07, Marcus Williams was signed one September 29th.
Both signed a fully non-guaranteed contract.

I guess the scheme is the same with McClinton and Gist. When second round picks are bad in SL, Spurs don't offer contracts with guaranteed money and players sign the contract just before the training camp.

A.J. Abrams is doing quite well I think in the Greek league, he is second in league scorers. His assists are low though. I liked him when he was at the Longhorns.

Do you think he will ever enter the NBA?

He is a Free Agent. He left Trilleka the other day because they were not paying him.

:wow really? Ok, well sadly not paying is quite common over us at the Balkans :lol I wonder where he's going now

I like to keep tabs on Longhorn players with NBA talent. PJ Tucker doesn't count.

Either way I was told he is back in Austin. He might go to Isreal or the D-League.

I see, well thanks for the update. I hope we'll see more about this guy and maybe even make it to the NBA in the future.

Like I said earlier, he is back in Austin. My question is what his next step is.

Yes, I was backing up your statement he was in Austin, thanks for the insight! Let us know if you find anything out further.

Sweet, I hope he signs with the Toros instead of continuing europe.

Wow. The only thing the Toros need less than a short chucker is a really short chucker.

I think the Toros quietly and recently waived a short chucker though, so it probably couldn't hurt.

What ever happened to A.J. and d-league? Or did he went overseas again?

As far as I know he has been in Austin just relaxing. I've talked to him a couple times and he has been staying in shape by working with his old high school team and going though tough workouts with his father. I would say he is about 5'10" give or take an inch. His length isn't bad just by looking at him, and his tone is impressive(but UT's strength program is amazing).

If I knew him better I would have asked him his plan for the NBA.

Thanks for the info :tu
He'll probably work out with some teams this offseason. I hope we'll see him with a NBA or D-league team sometime.

Honestly? If we're shopping for a little gunner, I'd much rather give McClinton another training camp shot. He's a better shooter, and a MUCH better physical package. He has a nice 36.5 vert, and his lane agility of 10.44 was just ridiculous. It was just horrible timing for him to be drafted in a year when we had SO many guaranteed deals.

Just an update for those curious, A.J. is playing in the second division in Italy for Verona. He leaves Monday to head over there. My guess is that he'll tear it up over there and lead his team into Series A.

I was hoping to see him in the NBA. Didnt he play with the Nets this summer?

I didn't ask him about that. I don't think he made the roster for some reason.

Ok. Thanks for keeping us up to date on A.J. He still is one of my favorite players. I hope he has a good season in Verona.

Still you can't tell me a team in series A couldn't use a shooter like Abrams.

I believe shooters are easier to come by in euro basketball than players who are willing to defend..

The Plfugerville high school basketball team is state ranked this year so I wanted to go to one of their games this year. I walked away unimpressed even though they defeated McNeil easily. However I noticed that Abrams was in town watching his old high school team play. After talking to him briefly I discovered he is out for the season with an ankle injury and he is rehabing in Austin.

That sucks, hope he recovers soon. Thanks for keeping us informed on A.J.
