He will be a RFA if Portland extend a $4.3M QO. They surely won't do it if they want to use their cap space.

I don't know what to make of this guy.

Yeah, he's had a weird career. He started off look like the steal of the draft. He was even regarded as untradeable at one point. Then he went into a massive slump and this year he either looked really good or really bad.

For the Spurs, I think I pass. Good skillset but I think he's a bit soft mentally and physically. He could become a better version of Matt Bonner but more likely he'd be a little bit better Bonner without the three-point range or the deceptively decent defense.

Looks like he's got a good mid range jumper and posted nice rebounding stats in some games.

But is he tough enough? Hows his defense?

i remember when he was drafted, all the knicksfans were raving about him and shit untouchable, ends up getting traded anyway....seriously overrated....

Taller, thinner, not as good a shooting matt bonner.

Double pass.

Tough call. He's too much of a question mark though he has the skills. I think Pop would have him in the doghouse quick.

Is Channing Frye Done In Portland?

Channing Frye hasn't gotten much playing time with the Blazers despite his hard work, and will become a restricted free agent this summer.

"I've tried to show them who I am," Frye told HoopsWorld.

"It's hard. You can be in a bad situation, then you can be somewhere good but that doesn't mean it's going to work. It's hard. Hey, that's the way it goes sometimes."

When Frye did earn time, he often struggled for the Blazers this season. With a host of talented big men on their roster, it appears unlikely that Frye will return to Portland this summer.

He got squeezed out this year with Oden back, but he has shown real NBA ability. Real inconsitent so far, but that's what you wind up with on a small budget, sometimes. His rebounding rate is pretty good when he gets minutes.

Spurs could do (and have done) worse.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if we did bring him in. Does have a nice jumper and is decent on the boards. Defense is a question mark IMO.

Frye's main attraction from the Spurs point of view would be his outside shot. He has range that extends out to about 20 feet and has even started shooting three-pointers. But everything else about Frye is underwhelming. He's a soft player who doesn't rebound, protect the rim or give quality effort. Overall, he's basically a worse version of Bonner.

If the Spurs are looking to use their LLE on a big man Frye needs to be on that list.

Channing Frye is about as stupid as they get. He has a low BB IQ, and his defense is very questionable. He might have a decent jumpshot, but that's about it. He doesn't even rebound that well.

I think the Spurs should take a look at him. As an Arizona fan, I watched him all 4 years in college and he grew to be a great player under a HOF coach. I think he needs to find the right situation. He's never had a stable situation in the pros. He won't ever be an all-star, but if he could be had for the right price, I think we should take him.

Anything is better than what we have now in Bonner.

Frye is a very strange case. I remember in his rookie season with the Knicks he was actually called "untouchable" at one point, and then later, just after Portland drafted Oden I read multiple articles about how Channing was working harder than ever before and was ready to emerge along with Aldridge & Oden as a dominant front line... it has just never happened. If the bigger FAs don't pan out, he's a reasonable consolation prize who is still young and has size and skill... I think with him it's all a mental thing at this point, and maybe being beside Duncan-- who he has said he admires and tries to emulate-- could bring him out of his shell. He's not in the Plan A group, but would be relatively inexpensive and has at least the potential to play the Luc Longley role beside 4 other more talented starters. Pop and RC can grab some insider information on him from Richard Jefferson, who was his teammate at Arizona...

I posted about Channing Frye near the trade deadline last season. I thought he would be a cheap big the Spurs could have gotten at that time.

Now, I don't think so.

The Spurs needs a big who can protect the rim, play good post defense, and block a shot or two.

Unfortunately, those qualities are not strengths of Channing Frye.

Former Blazers forward Channing Frye was in Cleveland on Monday visiting with the Cavaliers. "I'm enjoying this process. I'm visiting with Cleveland now, and I'm still talking to other teams, but all I can think about is getting in the gym because no matter where I go I'm determined to show the NBA what I can do," Frye said in an email. Frye is also being courted by Denver, San Antonio, Washington, Orlando and Phoenix
